This morning, irma was droided to a category1 hurricane with winds around 85 Miles Per Hour. The storm is northeast of tampa. Look at the video from the port of tampa. You see the heavy rain falling there. In the distance, you see transformers exploding. Heres what we know more than three million homes and businesses without power in florida. Miami National Airport closed today. It will begin limited flights tomorrow. This morning crews in the keys will be going house to house to look for people who need help. Some stayed behind. And we have a team of reporters working on this, looking at the damage from Hurricane Irma. Looking at the help thats on the way. Nbc10s katy zachry begins us off in the digital operations center. Katy . Reporter thats right. I am monitoring the latest updates that were getting into the newsroom of Hurricane Irma. We just got some of the newest video in minutes ago. Heres a look at things, how its faring in tampa. While you were sleeping, thats where irma wracked havoc. Tampa and st. Petersburg. Millions of people in florida without power. There is serious concern for people who wait out the storm in the keys where Hurricane Irma first made landfall. High winds right now are making it hard for helicopters to land and start the search and rescue process there. In miami, streets have become rivers from the storm surge. And cranes were toppled. In other parts of the state, roofs were ripped off of buildings, almost peeled off in layers. This storm is 400 miles wide, wider than the state of florida. Everyone in the state is affected to some degree. I have been monitoring whats going on in georgia and parts of the state. People are gearing up, preparing for high winds and torrential rains anded to move into their rains and more to move into their area. Ill have more coming up in the next hour. People in our region who have relatives and friends in florida have been on age waiting to see what irma will do. Jen morton says her dad, stepmom, and two young siblings moved to tampa a month ago. They are evacuated and staying with mortons grandfather. Shes watching and worrying from south philadelphia. Theres nothing i can do to help. That is another frustrating feeling. All i can do is watch and hope theyre okay. And speaking to another family who got one of the last flights out. For help arriving for the caribbean. St. Martin and the Virgin Islands have no power. Theres plenty of debris there to clean up. An organization in our area is trying to get desperately needed items to the Virgin Islands. V. I. Relief spent the weekend collecting supplies at the northeast philadelphia airport. We dont want to take away from what other people are going through in other parts of the world. We also dont want the Virgin Islands to be forgotten about either. Its this beautiful, Magical Community that couldnt possibly exist the way it does anywhere else in the world, and its gone. Today the group hopes to load supplies on an airplane and get them to the Virgin Islands as soon as possible. Meanwhile, hundreds of employees are pse g and Delmarva Power are helping with the recovery effort. A cargo ship will leave philadelphia to take supplies to puerto rico. Matt delucia will have more coming up. Animals from florida arrived at the Providence Animal Center yesterday morning. After vets evaluate them, the dogs will be ready for homes later this week. And dogs and cats arrived in north jersey this weekend, as well. Also evacuated from florida and south carolina. Animal Welfare Center in Morris County says theyve heard from a lot of perspective pet owners looking forward to meeting the new animals. The flags commemorate not only those who lost their lives in the attack but pay tribute to police, firefighters, ems who put their lives at risk every day. Flags will remain in place to re they will be there through tonight. A steel beam from the World Trade Center is a permanent part of the memorial. New york is preparing for the annual tribute in light. Video from the test run of the light beams honoring those killed in the attack on the World Trade Center. The tribute will happen tonight. In bucks county, the garden of remembrance will hold its annual ceremony this morning culminating with a candlelight ceremony at 7 00. 18 people from bucks county died in the 9 11 attacks. In philadelphias old city, a procession from the Firemans Museum to the betsy ross house will honor the victims of september 11th and the First Responders who rushed in to help. The events start at 9 59 this morning, the exact time the last tower at the World Trade Center fell. It ends with two bellringing ceremonies to represent the sound that summons firefighters to the call of duty. Were starting with Hurricane Irma here. We just got the latest update on the track path and on irmas intensity. Still a category1 hurricane, but barely. The thing is really starting to weaken, a great sign for the rest of florida, as well as into parts of the southeast. Winds at 75 Miles Per Hour. To qualify as Hurricane Force and a hurricane, its 74 mileperhour winds and above. This is barely qualifying as a hurricane now at this point. You see the pressure has gone up considerably from when it made landfall at 9 29. Were looking at it starting to weaken as it makes land interaction. The track update, by 2 00 p. M. This afternoon, weakening to a Tropical Storm and passing into georgia. Tuesday, this will move through alabama and weaken to a depression. At that point, just remnants of moisture will wedge our way. We will have showers in the forecast. Again, the takeaway point is irma is continuing to weaken. The radar and satellite, theres the moisture that will move our way. Its not until tuesday night into wednesday morning that i think well see some showers pop up. Today dry and nice. Scattered clouds and high clouds that will roll in due to irma later this afternoon. 56 at 7 00 a. M. 76 at 3 00 p. M. Forecast high into the upper 70s later on. 67 at 3 00 p. M. This afternoon. In delaware by this afternoon, 74. 3 00, highs in the upper 70s, as well. Same deal with new jersey. Upper 70s is close to average for this time of year. That will be very nice because High Pressure is going to be warming us up more than we saw this weekend. Over the shore, 55 at 7 00 a. M. High clouds rolling by this afternoon at 71 degrees. And for your winds, unlike weve seen the last couple of days, theyll be lighter, around 5 to 15 Miles Per Hour today. Mostly coming out of the north. Then the ship will head south toward puerto rico and the caribbean islands. That need has been growing the past few days. Hurricane irma now is in florida. She was earlier down in the caribbean. And there seasonal destruction in there is only destruction in the area. Strangers got together yesterday to gather items that will be needed in areas like st. Thomas and st. John, areas that took the brunt of the storms wrath. Winds topped 150 Miles Per Hour there. And now, days later, theres no power very little Cell Phone Service in the area. Debris on the grounds. And there are safety concerns that continue to grow. The ship will depart here later tonight at the treermarine term. There will be a plane at northeast philly airport that will also be loaded with supplies for hurricane relief. A lot of folks here gathering together to try to help those in need far away. Heavy rain is going to continue to light up the map, extending all the way from alabama to it looks like parts of the carolinas as we get into the afternoon today. Its also light likely the storm also likely the storm will drop below the Hurricane Force threshold. Heavy in atlanta at 8 00 tonight. It will spread and bow out by tuesday morning. Some of the moisture slung our way. Tuesday night we may start to see showers near delaware.
