And this morning, crews in the florida keys will begin going house to house to look for people who need help. Heres a look at some of the damage theyll be dealing with in the keys. You see debris including furniture, even a refrigerator there along the main road in and out of the island chain. The items appear to have been washed away from homes by the surge that hit the area yesterday. Nbcs katy zachry has all the overnight developments with irma. Were seeing new video of the damage left behind. Walk us through what you have there. Reporter new video in to our newsroom, and i can tell you the damage is widespread, as you would imagine. Communities from the keys all the way north of tampa are dealing with destruction from the hurricane. While the storm has been downgraded to a category 1, the winds are still as high as 80 miles per hour. Earlier at the height of things heres how strong the wind was. It was pulling rooftops from buildings, peeling them away. Practically in layers. This is video from miami and sarasota which sits on the coast between ft. Myers and tampa. Now not far from there in naples, take a look at this. The flooding is widespread. It even resembles parts of texas and houston. This is drone video from the eye of the storm as it passed through naples. Now in the eye, the winds and the rain are calm enough to fly a drone. Thats why we have video. Its one of the first looks at the scale of devastation that were getting. Again, this is over naples, florida, on the western coast. And i can tell you in the last hour, weve been monitoring a scare for First Responders in tampa. Many are staying at the Raymond James stadium where the buccaneers play. It was evacuated for a short time. Were hearing it may have been a false alarm. Sounds like the shelter is still a viable one for First Responders safely waiting out the storm before they get out to help people in need. Live in the digital operations center, nbc10 news. Thank you. 4 03. Irmas impact is being felt in our area. People in our region who have relatives and friends in florida have been on edge waiting to see what irma will do. Jen morton says her dad, stepmom, and two siblings just moved to the tampa area lest e less than a month ago. They were evacuated from their new home and are now staying with her grandfather. Shes watching and worrying from south philadelphia. Theres nothing i can do from here to help them. And that in itself is another another frustrating feeling where i feel like all i can do is watch and hope theyre okay. Meanwhile, we met the martial artella the martella family. They got one of the last flights out of sarasota. More than 150 employees with pse g are heading to florida to help restore power to the millions who lost it. They should reach the affected areas later today. They will stay there for several weeks. Delmarva crews also on their way. In newark yesterday, 120 employees loaded up their trucks and left. Theyll head to florida or georgia, wherever theyre needed most. Before taking aim at florida, Hurricane Irma left devastation in the caribbean. Days later, people in the u. S. Virgin islands still do not have power, and theres plenty of debris to clean up. And now an organization in our area is helping out. The group v. I. Relief is collecting supplies at the northeast philadelphia airport. We dont want to take away from what people are going through in other parts of the world. We also dont want the Virgin Islands to be forgotten either. This beautiful, image Cam Community that couldnt possibly exist the way it does anywhere else in the world, and its gone. Today the group hopes to load supplies on an airplane and get them to the Virgin Islands as soon as possible. Dogs and puppies rescued from irmas path will soon be up for adoption. The animals arrived at the providence media center. After evaluation, theyll be ready for new homes this week. Dogs and cats also arrived in north jersey over the weekend. They were evacuated from shelters in florida and South Carolina ahead of the storm. An Animal Welfare center in Morris County have heard from a lot of perspective pet owners looking forward to meeting the new animals. New york is preparing for the annual tribute in light. This is video from last nights test run of the light beams honoring those killed in the attack on the World Trade Center. The actual tribute will happen tonight. The installation was first unveiled six months after the 9 11 attacks. In pennsauken, nearly 3,000 flags at the memorial. Theyre not just meant to commemorate those who lost their lives but pay tribute to police, firefighters, and ems who put their lives at risk every day. The flags will remain in place throughout the night. The steel beam from the World Trade Center is a permanent part of the memorial. In philadelphias old city, a procession from the museum to the betsy ross house will honor the victims of september 11th and those who rushed to help. It starts at 9 59 a. M. , the exact time the last tower at the World Trade Center fell. It ends with two bellringing ceremonies to symbolize the sound that summons firefighters to the call of duty. Across new jersey, flags on government buildings will fly at half staff in honor of the nearly 7 hundred people from new jersey 700 people from new jersey who lost their lives in the attack. In villanovvillanova, famil friends, and fans will pay their last respects to a coaching legend, rollie massimino. It starts at 4 00 p. M. , the funeral is tomorrow at the church. Alabama looking at the heavy rain band activity moving through. It may stay a category 1, although its more likely it will downgrade to a Tropical Storm by late today and into this evening, especially. Heavy rain by 8 00 p. M. Impacting atlanta.
