Yeah, people here in miami are heading the warnings and local officials are trying to make sure that everyone has the resources needed as Hurricane Irma is headed towards this area. Theyve closed all of the schools across the state and theyre also making preparations for the roads. Weve seen hundreds of thousands of people hitting the roads. Traffic is bumper to bumper on both i95 and i75. And weve got more than 1,700 troopers on the roads to make sure that traffic is flowing smoothly. We also have the tolls across the state. Those tolls have been lifted. Just to make sure that people have everything they need to be able to get out of this area without having to pay for any tolls. They can get out as soon as possible. As the storm is headed this way. Airports, a dire need at the airports for people to get out. Flights are very high right now. People cant even get on flights. The airports are shutting down today. Theyll have to find other ways to try to get out of the city. We were told that more than 1,600 flights have been canceled in and out of miami. And if you consider the flights into caribbean, that totals more than 4,000 Flights Canceled because of this monster storm headed to this area. A big concern once the storm hits is going to be the storm surge. Depending on where it hits, it could impact both coasts of the state and that could cause catastrophic damage to this area. All eyes on this storm. Many people deciding to stay. Officials say if you decide to do that and youre in an evacuation zone, First Responders will not be available to help you. Were taking lots of precautions here in south florida. Shelters are open preparing for people to go there as the storm heads this way, rosemary and vai . Sarah rosario reporting for us from miami. Stay safe out there. Boy, its scary. It is. Thats the issue. Obviously, state officials are put in a difficult position, because they want to help people, but they dont want to put their First Responders in harms way, especially if theres other situations that they need to address during the height of the storm. So were going to be watching that. Meteorologist erika martin, of course, is tracking irmas path and what this all means looking forward to the weekend. You know whats interesting is that its now gown graded to a category 4. That doesnt mean thats going to be the case once it makes landfall. It really is the case of tracking it. If you recall, harvey was a category 3 and it eventually made landfall as a category 4. The issue and the reason i say that is because theres nothing thats blocking it from really being destroyed in the atmosphere. Its been able to maintain certain position and thats helped it to maintain its strength and organization. So now usually the Sierra Maestra and cuba will help deteriorate it. Not the case. All really hot water, enough to feed it as it continues to barrel towards florida. Thats really the big problem, guys. Here it is, Hurricane Irma. Its currently a category 4, sustained wind speeds of 155 miles per hour, clearing the bahamas and cuba and making landfall in florida. Where, exactly . We cant say just yet, but models are coming into agreement that it is going to make landfall overnight saturday into sunday, possibly as a category 4, but it very well could make landfall as a category 5. Hurricane irma is roaring through the caribbean, headed towards florida where it could make a direct hit this weekend. Irma is now a category 4 hurricane. Its been downgrade from 5. That could change and it still packs a pretty powerful punch. Winds at 155 miles per hour. The winds were certainly howling on turks and caicos last night. These videos posted on social media show those powerful winds and driving rain hitting resort properties all along the western side of the island. A high storm surge is expected to cause major flooding. Irma has been on a tear through the caribbean for several days, killing at least 12 people. The storm ripped through barbuda first, killing a 2yearold child. Most of the island, as you can see, is uninhabitable. In st. Martin, the storm flattened buildings and left the island with no power, no running water. Raging winds ripped down power lines and trees in puerto rico. A Million People there are without power. And now another major hurricane, jose, is heading in the same direction as irma, right through the caribbean. And in south florida, people are racing to get out of the hurricanes path, but flights out of town are hard to come by at Miami International airport. And leaving by car means waiting in long lines for gas and also traffic jams that are happening there. People are putting up boards and boarding up their homes. Crews have already covered up windows at president donald tru trumps maralago resort in palm beach. And the windows closing for escaping florida, and that has pa people scrambling, afraid of being trapped when the hurricane hits. Dozens of flights have been canceled or delays from south florida. A washington family tells us their flight was canceled and they only have a hotel room booked until saturday. So they do not have a place to stay when the storm strikes florida. I dont know how to deal with Something Like this. Im in fear. Its like, i dont know where to go. Its like, i dont know what to do. We also are talking to folks who have been able to get out of florida. This guy flew to philadelphia from miami to stay with his parents, away from the panic in the sunshine state. Helping hands from our area are heading to florida. 130 soldiers from the new Jersey Army National guard loaded up equipment yesterday. Yeah, theyre being deployed today to southeast florida and theyre bringing about 40 of these heavyduty highwheel trucks with they will. The unit is also armed with lessons they learned five years ago here at home during hurricane sandy. The one thing we learned from sandy is to be prepared for the unexpected. That may be part of the reason why florida specifically came to new jersey and said, hey, we would like your National Guard to help us. And the guard unit expects to be away for at least two, maybe three weeks, but that will depend on the variety of Hurricane Irma. Nbc 10 is live in cape may, where the unit is scheduled to leave in about an hour from now. These men just getting up their lastminute possessions here. As they pack. About 58 degrees outside in the philadelphia area. I think its safe to say, we are were lucky and we should be grateful for the weather weve got. We are, and we dont need to look any further than this picture here, center city. Lets check in with erika martin. Its been a busy morning for you. Youre tracking irma and youre also looking at weather for us this weekend. Thats right. So, vai and rosemary, thats right, were checking the weather for this weekend. And as you both have been mentioning, were very lucky here because were not going to be affected by any type of awful weather. In fact, we have a really nice stretch of weather. I want to mention that we have that report of the earthquake that did affect southern mexico, an 8. 1 on the Richter Scale reported by the usgs. If you follow u us nbcphiladelphia, youll get more updates. Really impressive how active the tropics are, the gulf of mexico. Katia, a category 1. Irma moving through the bahamas, south of the bahamas through cuba right now an category 4 and jose, currently a category 3. I dont see jose being an issue for us, for so many reasons. Its going to head northward first, and that will certainly affect it and weaken it quite a bit. In addition, irma is causing what we say upwelling and its making the waters a lot cooler for any other storm thats right behind it. So for so many reasons, i dont think that jose is going to affect us. But unfortunately, irma is going to make landfall in florida. And right now fst a category 4. Wind speeds are 155 miles per hour. But a category 5, the minimum sustained wind speeds have to be 156 miles per hour. And that could happen as it continues to work its way towards the florida peninsula. Well get this into motion for you. And the timing right now looks like its overnight saturday into sunday. One of the big concerns i had earlier that some of the models were showing is that it was trending just east of florida. So its going to make landfall and go right back out into the water and make landfall again. That could be the case. And if so, we very well could see two landfalls. Possibly a category 2 or a tropical storm. So well be keeping you updated on the possibilities there, with as far as irma is concerned. Again, follow us on social media at nbc philadelphia for more updates. And in skbrjust a bit, ill shou the tenday forecast. Back to you guys. Thank you, erika martin. 6 42 right now.
