Youre not going to have any trouble getting around there this morning. Also a look at mass transit, the war minister train to the airport is running about 12 minutes behind. There are a lot of closures because of Hurricane Irma that are taking place elsewhere, so double check before you head out the door. On its current path, Hurricane Irma is aiming for florida. Hurricane warnings have been issued for south florida and the florida keys for a hit expected over weekend. Right now irma is marching through the caribbean, where the monster storm is responsible for at least 12 deaths. The hurricane began battering turks and caicos last night and into the Early Morning hours. The category 5 storm packs 160mileperhour winds along the storm surge that could leave parts of the island underwater. All communications went down in turks and caicos just as irma hit. Now, in south florida, thats the sound youre hearing today, tomorrow, really until this storm gets there. People are boarding up their windows at their homes and businesses, preparing for the worst of irmas winds and rain. Caribbean islands already hit by irma are coming to grips with the dreepths of the destruction. On barbuda, irma knocked down nearly every building, leaving the island uninhabitable. Take a look at the debris from buildings levelled in this storm. At least eight people died, nearly two dozen are injured on this island. President trump says the federal government is working with florida officials to make sure that the state is prepared for Hurricane Irma and its aftermath. Now its just a question of what happens. Its the largest hurricane theyve ever seen coming out of the atlantic. And the winds are the strongest, most importantly. This is the real problem. The president also praised fema for the work done after harvey hit texas and the work being done to get florida ready to face irma. And travelers from miami arriving at Philadelphia International airport as they try to escape the storms path. Many brought their pets with them. One miami resident we spoke to said her husband lost his business in hurricane andrew and she knew this time, it was time to leave. It was enough for me early in the week. I dont want to its not worth it. Its just tough. Many travelers had to wait in long lines at Miles Airport before they could get on a flight out. One flyer said shed never seen anything like it. And in just a few minutes, well take you out life ve to miami, thousands rush to prepare for the storm. What people are doing to get ready for landfall. A 2yearold is just feet away, as a gunman murders her father. Police believe two men tried to rob the father just outside of his house in the Spring Garden section of philadelphia. Nbc 10s matt delucia joins us live from Police Headquarters to ti tell us more about this investigation. Matt . Rosemary, neighbors tell us this man was well known on the block and his wife had just given birth to another daughter. Now they and police are trying to figure out why this man was murdered in cold blood. Victim had just gotten out of his car, right by his house on the 1500 block of melon street in Spring Garden. This was around 8 00 last night. What police know about this, two men came up to him, stole his wallet, and shot him in the face at least once and then ran off. Police rushed that man to hahnemann, where he died. But right there in the backseat of the parked car was the victims 2yearold daughter and the family dog. The girl is with her mother this morning as they and others on this block wonder why. From witnesses, it didnt appear that there was any type of struggle. So it appears for some unknown reason, they decided to shoot this victim, even though they took his wallet. Now, police say that this murder was captured on home surveillance cameras from the folks there on the block, so detectives are going tlhrough that right now. And the two men they are after this morning are in their late teens or early 20s, and last seen wearing dark shirts or hooded sweatshirts. If you know anything, youre urged to call police right away. For now, outside Police Headquarters, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. Now in south florida, were following a fire at a recycling facility. You can see just in the distance, a large pile of recyclables on fire. This is right near 76 and the walt whitman bridge in philly. If youre heading into Center City Philadelphia from the airport, you can see these trash facilities in this region. Heres what we know. The fires isolated again. Its inside this recycling facility, but its not under control, yet. Were being told from our crew there on the ground that there have been some hydrant problems, which has caused a water delay. No injuries to report, but were going to keep an eye on this and keep you posted as we learn some new developments. Be aware of that. And new this morning in philadelphias point breeze neighborhood, a triple shooting puts three men in the hospital. One of them may have been shot at least 12 times and could not wait for an ambulance, so police took him. All three are in Critical Condition right now. There have been no arrests or weapons recovered. After a nearly threemonth internal investigation, a Philadelphia Police officer is set to be fired for shooting and killed a suspect as he ran away. Surveillance video shows david jones, just moments before he was shot in the back. The Police Commissioner says officer ryan pownall fired two shots at jones from up to 35 feet away, even though he posed no threat. Jones is accused of driving his dirt bike erratically. The 30yearold was carrying a gun and responding officers say he reached for it. However, jones had dropped the gun and was unarmed as he ran away. Investigators found the gun at least 50 feet from where jones was shot. The attorney general is investigating whether criminal charges will be filed. And a longtime pennsylvania politician says he wont return to congress when his current term is up. Representative charles dent says hes not running for reelection. The congressman represents the 15th congressional district, which covers all of north hatchthatc hampton county, most of lehigh county. Dent is a moderate republican who has been a frequent critic of the trump administration. He is serving his sempventh ter in congress. Right now in florida, folks are rushing to get out of the storms path. Those who are not leaving are boarding up their homes and businesses and trying to find whats left of supplies. Rosemary and vai, this storm is huge, and people after seeing what happened with hurricane harvey, they are heeding the warnings here in south florida. I mean, they see how big this storm is and the destruction its caused so far. So theyre heeding the warnings and right to get out. Right now in miami, were in downtown miami, its clear skies, its dry, its a little breezy. But most of the people who live in the condos behind me, theyve evacuated. We are in an evacuation zone. Right now there is a hurricane warning in effect for south florida. Bus evacuations are already underway. Airports are shutting down today. There is a mad dash to try to get out of this city. And people have been snarling theyve been waiting in lines at the gas stations, weve seen traffic congested. While tstorm is headed right fo miami, the entire snaunshine ste could be impacted with winds, rain, and the biggest concern is for storm surge. Mandatory evacuations in place in the keys and lower miami. There are shelters set up to make sure people have a safe place to go along with their pets. Officials say people who dont heed the warnings will be on their own and First Responders will not baseball to hee able t there and help those people in mandatory evacuation zones who were not able to evacuate. These new building codes put in place after hurricane andrew, that Tall Buildings like the one behind me are able to sustain a category 3 hurricane. This storm is much stronger, which is why local officials are telling people, get out now. Its not worth taking any chances. While its gorgeous here, we have a really nice stretch and really appreciate that, with i think. Thats something to be aware of. We have nice temperatures in the 70s. A little cooler than average, but its not going to be humid. And plenty of sunshine. So outdoor activities, however, we have to, of course, keep in mind that thats not going to be the case in florida. They have Hurricane Irma and the big concern is, rosemary and vai, is that she very well may make landfall as a category 5. And if that is the case, Hurricane Irma will be the only a third of hurricanes to have made landfall as a category 5. So here, lets go ahead and focus on the impact and the path of Hurricane Irma, as it continues to move across the tropics and the atlantic basin. Notice here, how its not going to encounter any type of rough terrain. Normally, cuba would be one to kind of just tear it apart. Not the case for irma. So its actually kind of a smart hurricane, if you will. Moving through these really warm waters, being fed all of that latent heat. Once it makes landfall in florida, of course, were watching whether it will make a category 4 or category 5 landfall. It doesnt make the difference at all, because no matter what, it will be catastrophic. So, again, tracking Hurricane Irma as it makes landfall, some time this weekend in florida. Locally, however, as i just told rosemary and vai, no complaints around here. We have an area of High Pressure, a system keep everything high and dry. At least the next couple of days. A couple of clouds just to the north and west of philadelphia. Otherwise, a very nice stretch. Current temperatures are a little chilly, so keep the jackets and sweaters handy. Parkside, 54 degrees. The players organized the hoops for harvey fundraiser last night. The event helped raise 4,000. A massive data breach has affected almost half of the United States and it comes at the hands of a company that should be protecting your information. Equifax says the breach exposed the information of 143 million customers. Based on the latest census, thats 44 of u. S. Population. According to the company, names, addresses, Social Security numbers, birth dates, even drivers license numbers were exposed. Credit card numbers for more than 200,000 people were also accessed.
