The showers we have been showing you on radar, theres one from skyforce 10, live view of that shower thats in northeast philly, lower bucks county. Some of that rain coming down pretty hard. Behind it, you see the brightness because the sun is back there somewhere behind that shower. Get some pretty pictures this time of day when you have showers and sun at the same time. We have 90s once again and we are likely to get it once again tomorrow. It will be steamy all week. The humidity is going to be pretty high all week, even when the temperature starts going down. The thunderstorms returning. Just a couple showers today but a lot more later in the week. Some of the clouds building even around the philadelphia area now. 92 degrees at the airport, the winds southwest at 11. Feels like 96 because the humidity is up considerably from what it was late last week. Even over the weekend, we got into the 90s but again, the humidity was pretty low for august. 94 today, 94 tomorrow and then it will start going down. Its just a question of wednesday, whether we hit that 90 degree mark or not. But the heat wave is not going to last all week. We have the southerly wind flow and you can see this, a little bit of a southeast wind meeting a west wind right over here. Thats right where the showers are developing. Thats no coincidence. You can see the southerly winds, the sea breeze keeping it nice and comfortable at the beaches. 80 degrees there. Feels like its well into the 90s inland. But with an 80 degree temperature at the beach, its not going to feel much higher. Theres that shower, even some lightning now that he we just showed you on storm force 10 in northeast philly and lower bucks. Its moving very slowly and that is not a good thing because that means that these areas are getting hit with a good bit of rain while five miles away, theyre getting nothing. We had the one shower go through trenton. Thats all the way down into Burlington County so that has moved. This one is moving less but it is drifting southward. Theres cheltenham, this is northeast philly. Its coming down northeast philly, not quite to the boulevard yet, but coming down toward north philly right now drifting in that direction. Theres a southerly wind as we go through the night. Things quiet down later tonight, then with the heat of the day tomorrow and the high humidity, we Start Building up some more isolated afternoon showers. Again, the sea breeze helping to create that, create the winds coming together and that forces the air up. Wednesday, you can see a lot more activity around and the wind off the ocean, and that means the temperature will go down a bit. You can see on the future temperatures here, instead of the red colors toward the end of the week, we are starting to get yellows. Nice and comfortable. At least compared to the deep reds of today. You see what happens when youre deep red on that map. Its hot and humid. Warm and humid tonight with isolated showers early. 75 for the low in philadelphia. 68 north and west. Tomorrow, hot and humid day, a lot like today. Maybe even feeling a little hotter. Highs in the low to mid 90s. Isolated showers late in the day. Most of you not seeing it. A few more of you seeing it on wednesday and then a lot of us seeing it thursday and into friday. That moisture, wind off the ocean, the clouds helping to keep the temperature down. So this heat wave doesnt look like it will last all week. By the time the eagles play saturday night it will be a whole lot cooler than yesterday afternoon. Check your pockets. It looks stifling out there. So hazy. Lets check in with chief meteorologist glenn hurricane schwartz. The humidity was a much bigger factor today. Yes. There are a couple of heavy showers around. Good thing its not in center city, raining on the great Stevie Wonder. We may see a couple showers around Citizens Bank park tomorrow. It will be a hot, humid one as the phillies come back to town. 91 degrees on saturday, 93 sunday but the humidity was down so it didnt feel quite so bad. 94 today with higher humidity and we felt it. 94 tomorrow, too. The humidity will be with us pretty much all week. The temperatures are in the 90s where its not raining or were getting a wind off of delaware bay or the ocean. So there are several places getting a little bit of relief from that. But it feels like its 96 in philadelphia right now, 95 in reading and allentown. That is pretty steamy. Thats as high as its been in this particular heat wave. We see most of the area, not getting any rain but those who are getting rain, theyre getting pounded. Its mostly now in northeast philly. You see lightning strikes there. As we go in even farther, you can see the border. Theres the border of northeast philly so the far northeast getting it. The red of course indicating the heaviest rain just to the west of bensalem. So welsh road near grant avenue, getting close to the boulevard as well, being affected here. Thats a tremendous rainfall rate, three to four inches per hour. Plus the fact that its not moving very much. So there have probably been a couple of inches of rain at least in parts of northeast philly, just in the last hour or so. So we have the isolated showers at 6 00 and it stays warm and humid for the rest of the night. Well see how long this heat wave lasts with the rest of the sevenday. A pittsburgh steeler is teaching his children a lesson that has a lot of people talking. Linebacker James Harrison is making them return their participation trophies because he says they did not earn them. It is a hot topic that has many people chiming in. We found one local psychologist who calls harrison her hero. It was an Instagram Post from harrison that stirred the conversation about how and when we reward our children. Harrisons sons received trophies simply for participating in a sport. In the post, harrison vowed to return the trophies and said quote, im not sorry for believing that everything in life should be earned, end quote. One psychologist we spoke to says he rewarding children for expected behavior can have lifelong detrimental effects. What were doing is taking away these lessons that they can learn during difficult times like for example, not getting reward when theyve tried their best. James harrison also wrote on instagram that sometimes your best is not enough and that should drive you to want to do better. We have been asking parents to chime in on our nbc 10 philadelphia facebook page. The question is do you agree with James Harrison that participation trophies should not be given out for youth sports . Marie writes totally agree. Participation should not warrant a trophy. Trophies need to be earned. Participation trophies diminish the reward. Jenae disagrees, saying encouragement is good for children. Let them wait a little longer for the disappointments. You can join the conversation and share your opinion on the nbc 10 facebook page. The heat is continuing for the third day in a row making it an official heat wave. Now the humidity is being added in. So weve got some more 90s in the forecast but the steamy week is going to be steamy even after the heat wave is broken. Thunderstorms returning. Weve had one pretty big one in northeast philly right now as much of the rest of the area is just dry. Its 93 at philadelphia international. Southwest 11. Feels like 96 degrees. In northeast philly, bensalem, down to 80. Trenton is 80. They had a heavy shower as well in the past hour. You can see what a difference it makes. As soon as you get some rain and other areas of new jersey and delaware, as soon as you get a wind coming in off the cooler ocean or delaware bay, temperatures start to go down. We can show you some of the big differences here. Look at this. 78 degrees in Cape May Harbor while its mid 80s farther inland. 81 at sea isle city, 86 in woodbine. In atlantic county, 80 at the marina, close to 90 farther inland. In the same county, just a few miles away. The feels like temperature in the mid 90s in some parts of the area. Now, the extra humidity has helped to fuel a couple of showers and even thunderstorms and now theres a flood advisory in effect until 9 15 tonight for northeast philly and just a small portion of montgomery county. Just east of abington and cheltenham, just a small portion bordering northeast philly. You can see theres very little on the radar but a couple of these showers are pretty heavy. The one that went through trenton really weakened dramatically. This one, we wish weakened because its not moving very much. As we have been telling you in the last hour or so, if theyre not moving much, you got some problems. Theres another one that has developed northwest of warminster. This is the cell of course causing the problems. This is a border of northeast philly on this side and of course, cheltenham township now getting into some of the heavier rain. This is a radar estimate and in this area, just east of parts of huntington valley, thats two to three inches of rain, radar estimated. Thats fallen just in the last couple hours. So there may be some localized flooding in there. You dont want to drive into flooded roads. You can see the southerly flow that keeps the humidity going up. And we will continue to see that tomorrow as well. We could see some more showers developing but its going to become a little more widespread on wednesday with yet another day of moist winds coming in off of that ocean. We will see more showers around during wednesday and then even more on thursday as some of this activity from the west comes straight in to the area. That will certainly help keep the temperatures down. Weve just got the isolated showers and storms and northeast philly getting hit the hardest now. Warm and humid, 75 for the low in philadelphia, 68 north and west. Tomorrow, hot and humid, feels like up to 98, and just isolated afternoon showers again. Sevenday forecast, the chance, better chance of any showers on wednesday and then very likely on thursday and friday, helping to keep the temperature down. A little less humid and more comfortable over the weekend. We have an update on nbcs clear the shelters campaign. More than 18,000 animals across the country have new homes thanks to saturdays event and thanks to you. We have some new adoption numbers from our area we would like to share. Folks adopted nearly 1100 pets in the philadelphia region, 587 dogs and cats in pennsylvania. In new jersey, it was 456. In delaware, there were 51 adoptions.
