The phillies and rangers agreed on a deal that brings phillies six players and sends hamels to texas. The deal is not complete until physicals are complete and theyve all passed. A big story. Hamels is the phillies the most successful home grown pitcher since halloffamer robin roberts. He led them to the 2008 world series and earned the mvp honors in that process. He becomes the first pitcher in major lead pitching to be traded after throwing a no hitter in his last start which he did in chicago last saturday. Marshall harris is live for us from Citizens Bank park where its time to say goodbye to hollywood. Marshall welcome. Weve sort of weve expected this news but its still stunning to think hamels will no longer be a philly. Tell me your reaction. Like everyone else vai it makes you reflect on what he meant to this team. Of course the best era of phillies baseball when they won five Straight National league east championships. Went to backtoback world series winning the first of those. Hamels was the mvp. Hes one of the faces of that time with the phillies. Slowly fading away. As you know. Jimmy rollins was trading. Look at the team now. Only three players remain car loss ruiz chase utley and also one other guy when you look at ryan howard who are still with this team. Their days may be numbered as well. So simply just one of the last pieces of that 2008 world series championship team. The legacy that he leaves is one of the best pitchers along with the life of carlton and Robert Robertson in history. Executive director of the Hamels Foundation this morning and he was telling us that the organization will continue with all philadelphia planned events. So thats pretty good news. You know, you and i have been to some of coles events. In the time that youve been here, can you think of a player you know maybe chase, he and his wife with their foundation for animals, can you think of anybody that has been more active in the community than cole and his wife . I can think of guys that maybe have been equally active when you look at shane victorino, the work he did with boys and girls club when he was a philly. Jimmy rollins and Johari Rollins when they were here. Youre right, every year cole hamels and his wife heidi hamels put together so many events all benefitting education. She was the driving force behind a lot of work that the Hamels Foundation has done, will continue to do. Theyve had a huge impact on the philadelphia area and its nice to hear that the Hamels Foundation is still going strong here in philadelphia despite the fact that hell be spending time now as a texas ranger down in arlington. Tomorrow evening a threeevent series engaging men of color will kick off in philadelphia. Its called beyond expectations and it will give young men the opportunity to share powerful stories and learn from those who face unique challenges. Dr. Arthur evans is the commissioner of the department of Behavioral Health with the city of philadelphia. He is spearheading this initiative. Hes here with d. J. And producer rich medino who is participating in beyond expectations. Thank you for being here. Thank you. Dr. Evans lets start with you. The issue of Race Relations here especially important at this time. Youve seen situations that especially with police that are happening, ferguson of course. Yesterday, just yesterday at the university of cincinnati. You see what happened there. Given all of that why do you think this is so important, this initiative . Well so this event really is about Mental Wellness for africanamerican men. When you look at as you said whats going on in our communities, the daily stresses that people have what we know is that africanamerican men often dont have conversations about their own Mental Wellness. This is an opportunity working with people like d. J. Rich medina and other wellknown artists to tell their stories and engage in that. Rich tell me how you got involved and why you got involved. I got involved because i got a call from my manager saying that they have this initiative thats based on speaking to the Mental Health of black men in the United States and as a blackman as a father of a 7yearold son to be blackman i find that its a very unique platform and its an honor to be called considering all the people of philadelphia who have a prominent voice in that community already. To be called is a fantastic opportunity so i jumped on it immediately. Tell me what you both hope to accomplish with the initiative. Well, a couple of things. One is that we want to change the conversation. I think one is to come at these issues from a strengthbased perspective. One of the things i am really excited about is in addition to mr. Medina we will have Black Thought there and championship boxer bernard hopkins. Two other very prominent people. Everyday men who are, as you said, have overcome adverse cities in their communities, adverse cities in their lives and theyre doing well and i think the message is that people can do well that our Mental Health is a part of our physical health and by raising these issues creating forums for these issues that communities can and people can really address them effectively. Do you guys think thats just a black issue or could be a male issue that were just not as in touch with our feelings and sort of reticent to share what our issues are with someone else . Well its really an issue for our entire community. I should say this is part of an overall strategy that the city city is taking to take a Public Health approach to the issue of Mental Health. The reality is that all communities have trouble sometimes talking about how were doing from a mental standpoint and but we do know that for men, im a man, i know that sometimes, you know people are saying how are you doing . People say, im doing okay whether you are or not. You know part of this is to say, you know sometimes were not okay and its okay to talk about that. Fantastic. We appreciate you both coming in. Beyond expectations engaging males of color is happening tomorrow night from 8 00 to 10 00 p. M. At the Philadelphia Theater Company on broad and lumbar streets in philadelphia.
