Were here with hoda kotb. On your last day, we brought out a big crowd. Can i just say, this is my kind of crowd. A crowd of young girls, their moms and a bunch of other people some of whom spent the night overnight but theyre ready for fifth harmony around so am i thats in our 8 30 halfhour. But lets start on a friday morning with history being made in South Carolina this morning. For the first time in more than half a century, the Confederate Flag will be removed from the State Capitol grounds. And with a big crowd expected security is very tight. Well talk exclusively to the states governor nikki haley in just a employment. But first, today National Correspondent craig melvin has the latest. Craig, good morning to you. That history that you just mentioned will be made about three hours from now behind me and for all of us who have grown up in the shadow of this confederate battle flag here in colombia it will be an emotional day after more than 50 years, the flag willtaken down in a short and solemn ceremony. This morning for the first time in more than 50 years, the confederate battle flag will no longer fly at South Carolinas State Capitol. I am surrounded by members of the emanuel nine family. Reporter Governor Haley acknowledged the nine killed in charleston three weeks ago using a separate pen for each victim. The history of the action that took place by everyone in South Carolina to get us to this moment is one that we can all be proud of. Reporter the church killings sparked a nationwide debate about the Confederate Flag. Sock arguing it represents South Carolinas heritage. Whether its right or whether its wrong, it is a part of american history. Reporter others that it is a painful reminder of slavery and racism. The heated controversy not letting up on social media. Taking down the Confederate Flag is almost taken do you go a part of american history. It is not a flag of racism it is a flag of culture. Another posting, now your entire state can unite and heal under one flag. The american flag. Formal come graham whose sister cynthia hurd was killed at the church removing the flag is bittersweet bittersweet. Were glad that the flag is coming down but we still are heartbroken by the loss of our sister and the eight others. Reporter state representative jenny horn a descendant of confederate president Jefferson Davis im very proud. Im proud of my state. Im proud of this body. And im proud of the governor. Reporter the flag itself will be taken down by a department of Public Safety honor guard, the same honor guard that was used at the funeral of South Carolina state senator Clementa Pinckney 1 of the 9 folks gunned down in that Church Basement in charleston more than three weeks ago. It is a great day in South Carolina. Well lets talk about it. The events of yesterday and today would have seemed unthinkable five weeks ago in your state. So lets start this morning by just tell me about your emotions this morning. Personally. You know im proud. Im proud of the people of South Carolina that came together after a terrible tragedy. I think about the emanuel 9. I think about cynthia hurd whose life motto was be kinder than necessary. I think about Twanza Sanders whose last words before he stood in front of his aunt susie said we mean no harm to you. You dont need to do this. Sharonda left three children of her own. Im thinking of those nine people today. Youve talked about them and their grace and the forgiveness of their family members and you said that they started action all around this country. They made us think not of our differences but what our similarities are and yet there are still differences, governor. As that flag comes down today in your state, you know there are going to be an awful lot of people who are going to see it as a defeat theyre going to be angry and theyre going to think it is a piece of their heritage that is coming down. What do you say to those people this morning . I think weve gone through that debate. What weve said is that in South Carolina we honor tradition. We honor history. We hon more heritage. But there is a place for that flag and that flag needs to be in a museum where we will continue to make sure people can honor it appropriately. But the state house is an area that belongs to everyone and no one should ever drive by the state house and feel pain. No one should ever drive by the state house and feel like they dont belong. So i think this is a hopeful day for South Carolina. I think it is a day that we can all say that we have come together as a state. I think you can look at the way South Carolina responded to this tragedy, and i think we can all say that hopefully the emanuel nine are looking down at feeling proud today. You have faced relentless criticism over the last four or five weeks, governor. There are people who have brought up your Indian Heritage theyve called you an outsider theyre promised political retribution. Some have even promised personal retribution. As a result of the events of the last couple of weeks, are are you concerned for your personal safety . No. You know i have faith. I will tell you that ethyl lance used to sing a song and the song would be basically said one day sweet jesus. Thats all im asking of you. Give me the strength to do every day what i have to do. Thats all ive thought about every day. And weve gotten through a tough time in South Carolina. Were still grieving. It is going to be a while before the healing really starts to begin. But after the emotions come down after everybody looks back theyre going to look back to the fact that nine people accepted someone into a church that didnt look like them didnt sound like them and prayed with him for an hour. The love and the faith and the acceptance taught the entire state and country what love looks like. And those families taught us what forgiveness looks like. Theyve given us a path for the children as we go forward. Governor a lot of people have commented on the way youve handled these events and handled yourself over these last several weeks. Mitt romney tweeted yesterday, congratulations to nikki haley for real and symbolic leadership. From Philip Rucker the signing ceremony yesterday. If jeb bush was watching tv just now, i wonder if he was just thinking ive just found my vp. Big moment for nikki haley. Do you think this twoweek period or threeweek period has launched you into a different orbit in terms of National Politics . You know if i did my job right and that means i need to work harder, the people will talk about the lives of those nine people. What they taught South Carolina. What they taught the country. What their families taught us and how the people of South Carolina responded should show our country we can do this. We can do this and we can continue to move forward as a country in a way that unifies people and that shows what real love looks like. Thats what i want people to get out of this. I dont want this to go away quickly. I want people to remember what today feels like and know that anything is possible. So ill keep my focus on that. I think the fbi recognizes they cant allow that to happen and they went out and caught some of these disruptions where they were able to actually go out and pull people off the street who may have been planning to attack. The fundamental differences between al qaeda and isis and isis related people theyve arrested, what can you tell us about their motives that makes those two groups different. Al qaeda looks to bigger attacks, like 9 11. The concern Law Enforcement has now with isis is this social media. People are reaching out from across the sea into peoples living rooms through twitter and through facebook and theyre causing them to rat callize, theyre helping them and conditioning them to launch these attacks. The fbi director called it like the devil on your shoulder. You can speak on this because you worked in Cyber Security weve had 21 Million People who were hacked in the government. When you heard those sheer numbers, what sounds so large, were you surprised by that . Its not even just the numbers. It is actually just the type of information that was stolen. Were talking about Peoples Mental Health records. Most Sensitive Data that people applying for government positions provide to get background checks done. This type of information in the hands of a foreign adversary is a coup intelligence wise. Can the u. S. Do anything to stop this now . From an intelligence perspective theres not a lot. Once that informations gone the horse is out of the barn youre not going to do anything to repair that. What the government needs to do is actually have conversations with those who may have stolen it and define what the red lines are, whats appropriate and whats not. As i said theyre on a spectrum of hostility which i think is really regrettable in a nation of immigrants like ours. My record as it relates to immigrants is pretty clear. Theres no hostility at all. Now to that video that we showed you there at the top of the show. An arkansas woman and her baby escaped their home just before a frightening explosion caught on camera. Texarkana firefighters were entering the home Late Wednesday night when a backdraft blew the insulation from the house. Thankfully the two firefighters were not injured in the blast. Investigators are calling the fire suspicious because there was no electric or gas connected to the house. And a terrifying moment on an Amusement Park ride before the ride even started. It happened on the catapult ride in Wisconsin Dells just seconds before the ride was supposed to launched a woman and a child into the air. One of the bungee cords snapped. The impact left a hole in the asphalt. Thankfully no one was injured but a very close call for that woman and her child. Scary moment for them no doubt. Frightening good thing it hadnt gotten into the air. Right. Dylans here. Youre talking about a tornado in pennsylvania . There is a possible tornado in pennsylvania. Crews will go out today to assess the damage. There really wasnt much damage in the area besides this school. Look at this school. This is Blue Mountain adventis elementary in washington township. We hear there was only one person inside during the tornado but that person was not injured. He got out safely but that area certainly dealing with some severe storms. This happened around 6 45 yesterday evening and it did wipe out that Elementary School. Fortunately, schools out of session right now so there was not any more injuries than we already saw with that one person. Also in montgomery county, pennsylvania we saw flash flooding again because of these heavy downpours. Weve had these rounds of storms that pop up producing a lot of lightning. The lightning caused tree damage and the flooding got some people trapped. Out west talking about monsoonal moisture producing more showers and storms lots of lightning and potential for heavier downpours. We also have a chance today for stronger storms in north texas and also into the midwest once again. The biggest threat is for hail damaging wind gusts hows it progressing with the prisoner . A celebration sure to have several hundred thousand fans filling nyc with chants of usa. Beginning this halfhour with a story of survival. Three sisters found alive, thankfully and reunited with their family after vanishing in the wyoming wilderness. Nbc National Correspondent Miguel Almaguer has the latest on this. Reporter good morning. We arent far from where those three girls were spotted rescued by those two trail guides who say theyre surprised the young woman were able to survive some incredibly difficult conditions overnight. This was the rescue everyone had been praying for. Gone 12 days 25yearold Megan Andrews with her sisters 22yearold erin and 16yearold kelsey finally back in the arms of family. Their father there as his girls were brought to safety. Im just relieved. I started to cry. Losing all your kids at once is not an easy thing. Reporter the sisters planned a fiveday hiking trip into wyomings Teton National forest. But after working their way deep into the woods, failing to check in with family a massive search was launched on day ten. The lucky break came wednesday. I seen Something White just kind of bobbing along this ridge. Reporter teenage cowboys nate sutter around colton cook were clearing a trail when they thought they spotted a person. They were on the mountain on a ridge, thats not just where someone goes and hikes. Reporter when they learned the sisters were missing they relaid the coordinates to search teams who found the girls within 20 minutes seven miles from where they left their car, the opposite direction of where volunteers were being looking. Just before their rescue the sisters survived an incredible night in the woods. It was rough. It was raining and snowing. Sleet. Hail. You can imagine up there. Reporter found cold wet and hungry, this nk mo themorning the sisters are safe finally back with family. Theyre in good spirits, kind of hungry a little smelly too. Reporter for those who know the trail here say one wrong turn and you can become incredibly lost. As to the sisters who do have camping experience they were incredibly prepared with food and gear. Looking at where we have some storms today, it is going to be in the midwest. Governor nikki haley signed the bill on thursday to remove the controversial flag. It has long been a source of friction between those who view it sass a symbol of Southern Heritage and those who regard it sass a reminder of slavery and racism. Warning labels on popular pain relievers will now have stronger language about their risks of heart attack and stroke. The fda announced the changes on thursday. The new warning states that heart attack and strokes can occur in the first few weeks of taking nondestroyedal antiinflammatory drugs. Currently labels warn pain relievers can increase the risk of heart related problems if used long term. Facebook may be looking to change its tune a little bit. The New York Times reporting the social networking giant has held talks with record labels to add music videos to users news feeds. Facebook would share revenue with ads that run alongside the videos. The site has 4 billion videos used per day currently. Three sisters who got lost during a hiking trip in oregon over the weekend are safe thanks to teenage cowboys. The girls from wisconsin were reported missing when they failed to meet their parents on tuesday in chicago. When did you decide that was best to have his legs removed . Amputate amputated . Shortly after he was born we met with a team of different doctors. We felt by amputating his lower legs he would have the opportunity to be as mobile as possible. I couldnt have my legs . No not real legs. What was the other option . The other option was to keep your little feet. You know your little baby feet . And if braylon has two sets of legs. One for walking, and one for running. He gets fit for new ones every 6 to 12 months. Insurance doesnt cover the running legs so it is through a foundation that braylon is every other year able to get these amazing running legs. History about to be made in South Carolina. The Confederate Flag that has flown on the grounds of the state house in columbia for more than five decades, a symbol of hate for many, heritage for others, is about to be taken down and moved to a museum. This comes just weeks after this historic vote by state lawmakers and just over three weeks after that deadly shooting at a black church in charleston. Nbcs ron allen is down there in that crowd somewhere. Ron, we were getting the aerial view. Give me a sense of the size of the crowd, the security, and are there people on both sides of this issue present . This is an incredible moment. People are starting to chant, take it down. Take it down. There are thousands upon thousands of people here on the state house grounds. And crowding the streets around the capitol. People have been coming here since early this morning to be a part of this and to witness it. We can see that honor guard is in place, a small honor guard will march out to the flag and take it down. This will be a small brief dignified, quick ceremony thats not going to last very long. Also, on the steps of the capitol, question see a large contingent of relatives of those who lost loved ones so tragically at Mother Emanuel Church a few weeks ago. This is so much about them. I can seat governor there. I can see nicky haley shaking hands with the relatives at the top of the steps there. That is a cue this is about to begin. When the governor arrived, we were told the ceremony will begin. There is very, very heavy security here. The area is closed off for blocks. There is a ban on carrying personal weapons within 250 yards of this place as a precaution because people are concerned about the passions that are on both sides of this issue. There are protesters out for the past few days. There was an epic, epic debate in the house of representatives here that lasted for 12, 13 hours, well into the night a few days ago. Debate wlg this flag should come down or not after 54 contentious years here in South Carolina. And now that is going to happen in a brief, dignified ceremony that should be getting under way any moment. The governor is in place. And now the honor guard is in place. We expect this to begin any moment. Let me interrupt for a second. We also have chuck todd standing by in washington. As the ceremony is about to take place and grofrn hailovernor haley did spear head this effort, talk about the significance of this happening at this moment in our nations history. Matt, its unbelievable. When i think about sort of my career covering president ial politics, it always goes through South Carolina. This flag has been so contentious for so long. And it just seemed an intractable debate. And all of a sudden, it is not. The fact it took a tragedy to do. This you get the feeling, i feel like were witnessing, you know, the were marking the end date on the confederate battle flag as a symbol in american politics and its today. 2015. That will be the epitaph on the Confederate Flag. It feels that way. The country moved on. I have to tell you, its remarkable to watch Governor Haley, the two senators both republicans Lindsey Graham and tim scott. This couldnt have happened in South Carolina without the three of them locking arms and making it happen, staying united. To me, its a lesson in leadership that others who are in elected office ought to watch. Because the three of them pulled this off together. Obviously Governor Haley being the leader f they dont lock arms this doesnt happen as swiftly and as momentously as it is. And grofrn hailovernor haley talked to us and talked about the families of those who lost their lives at that ame church and said the grace and forgiveness changed her and changed the mood in South Carolina and this country and forced people to look at what we have in common, not what divides us. And, yet, chuck and ron, ill let you chime in after. That we have to remember, there are a lot of people in South Carolina who are going to watch this and for them its a defeat. For them they see it as a losing or a loss of their heritage. And theyre going to be angry about this. And, matt, make no mistake, there will be some political reprecushions for state legislator, a state senator, a member of that assembly who may lose their reelection because of their vote to go with the governor on this and take down this flag. But it feels as if its still sort of a remnant of the past. Chuck, lets just watch this as this happens. This honor guard, i think ron mentioned earlier, the same honor guard that served at the state funeral in South Carolina for state senator and reverend clemente klem en clemente pinckney. Lets watch. You can hear chants in the background continuing, take it down. We were told this would be simple and dignified, lasting five minutes or ten minutes. Once the flag is taken down, it will be handed over to the man who runs the relic room at the Confederate Museum about a mile away from the State Capitol there in columbia, South Carolina. Were told it will be displayed appropriately. Not really sure exactly what that means. And i would expect youll hear a cheer as this flag starts to come down. Ron allen, can you hear me . Yes. Give me a sense for what youre seeing and hearing. I hear a lot of emotion. I see a lot of teary eyes. I see a lot of people straining to take never second of this moment. I see a lot of relief. I see some anger. I see some small Confederate Flags in the crowd. And ive heard those voesices so loudly. This is a memorial to tens of thousands of young men and women that gave money for a cause they were fighting, the civil war. And those dont care if this is wrong or right. They want their ancestors honored. The flag on that pole sits in front of a confederate soldier memorial. Its one of the largest memorials on the state house grounds. It is prominently in the front. As you drive by the capitol, that is the first thing you see. The flag, of course, is not there any longer. But others point out that that is enough of a monument along with many others here to hohn yort memory of those soldiers. Fwhut is but this is a moment in is being sthak is reallyate that is trying to move on. Walmart, ebay, sears came out and said they will no longer deal with confederate memorabilia. There is a ban by the ncaa of having championship sports, College Sports here in South Carolina because of the flag. And that has now been lifted. The debate in the house the other night, a lot of representatives emphasized the Economic Impact that this flag being here has had on South Carolina and the hope that that will now change. Again, burst of applause. People yelling, take it down. The hope here is that this will move this will help this place move on. And what i really see, matt, what im focusing on, is the faces of the loved ones who lost at Mother Emanuel Church. There is a large contingent here. I also see the pastor of that Church Reverend goff who presided over nine separate funerals in the past couple weeks. We went to manufacture the funerals. They were emotional. They were gut wrenching. They were also inspiring because of the forgiveness and the grace that these families have shown throughout this as we can now see the flag being marched across the state house grounds. But i see a lot of tears in the eyes of those families. I see a measure of relief. I see also and i heard them talk about how bittersweet this is. Because it took the lives of their loved ones to make this happen. And those nine were innocent and ordinary people. A librarian, a track coach, a young man who just finished college, and who was dreaming of being a barber, entrepreneur, mothers, fathers, grand fathers, the oldest, 74. The youngest 26. Ron, let me jump in for a second. Were watching that flag being handed over to the director of the South Carolina confederate relic room and military museum. And it will then go off to that museum to be displayed or stored from now on. Not to be flown at the State Capitol again. And, chuck, to bring balk in, we saw grofrn hailovernor haley standing on the grounds. So much attention on her over the last several weeks. And so much praise, also, so much criticism. What has this done to impact her career and her political future . Look, you cant help but say that, you know this is a case where her act as a governor in the state have gotten national attention, given her national exposure. She was a once and future rising star when she first got elected. Maybe tried to be a National Star too soon too, quickly in that first term. Sort of put her focus on the state and now she met the moment. Matt, we see this all the time in politics. You meet a moment. Its an unexpected moment. How do you handle that moment . And i think that its pretty clear nicky haley handled this as well as any governor could handle. You can say she was late to the game. That criticism is there. Shes accepted that criticism. But again, without her, Lindsey Graham and tim scott locking arms on this i dont know if that South Carolina Republicancontrolled Legislature does this. They pulled this off. So in a simple and dignified ceremony, history made this morning in South Carolina. The Confederate Flag removed from the grounds of the capitol in columbia. Something so many people had wanted to see happen for decades. But also something fairly that so many others have resisted for that same period of time. It remains to be seen whether the removal of that flag does what members of the South Carolina legislature hope it will do, usher in a new era for the state and perhaps even usher in a new era of unity and racial harmony in this country. Well have to wait and see. There will be a lot of talk after that, im sure. All right. Were going to turn now to natalie . Actually, well have much more on this event throughout the day on might bensnb about. We talk about results and performance, we dont talk about these things. So clothing is important whats a turnoff . When you are provocative or wrinkle wrinkled youre saengd message you never left the house. Youre saying im at home, many i head isnt here. I always tell people be more toned down, a little more dressed up than youd like to be because theres a line between work and home. And a pushup bra is not a good idea for certain careers. We took a large oval watermelon sliced it in half then drew a slel design with marker grabbed the linoleum cutter. If the kids help out make sure theyre putting away from their body. From a second watermelon we cut the legs and the head. Then and stuck them there . We took them in with there with toothpicks and were going to add eyes. We have to bring this guy to life. A little corn syrup is all you need to deck him out. Oh its so cute i have to tell you the best part about this turtle. The shell becomes a lid. So you can take it off, throw a spoon in it and you have dessert. Just adorable. So cute. This is a hippopotamus. Its our hungry hippo. You want to cut a mouth into the end, a big happy smile. Scoop the fruit out using your melon baller then create the eyes and ears from the rinds similar to how we did the tortoise over there. So the rind you cut out you use for other things . You can repurpose it. Ill show you how to make teeth. While im doing that why dont you stick these in. These are teeth for our hippo and ill show you how easy it is to make the teeth. I think about four will make him have a nice grin. Just cut away the rind so theyre nice and bright and white. Wouldnt she two on the bottom . You can customize. We cut this from another watermelon, just the one end, position them like so and then here, this is one of his front legs from a nice big wedge. Place that in front and now he needs some feet. We also just cut these out with a pearing knife and we made his face using a paring knife and made nostrils with a screwdriver, put the eyes on the pooth picks. Thats so cute. And watermelon tong. How cute is that . Darling. One more to show you. This is our star shape. If you want to simplify a little bit, grab a cookie cutter press it into the front of your watermelon to make an imprint.
