A deadly ice cave collapse at a National Forest thats really popular with hikers. Nbcs jacob rascon is at a local hospital. What can you tell us . Reporter matt good morning. The three most critically injured patients are being treated here all crushed by ice. And that cave area is now closed indefinitely as a rescue effort has now turned into a recovery. This morning, one person is dead and five others are injured after a section of the popular big four ice caves in Northern Washington suddenly collapsed monday. Being advised for a possible partial collapse of the ice caves. About eight to nine subjects possible injuries. Some subjects unconscious. Reporter more than 100 rescuers raced to the remote area 70 miles northeast of seattle. Theyre essentially frozen over avalanche chutes over a giant rock chute. Incredibly dangerous. Reporter three hikers two men and a woman, were airlifted to a hospital in seattle. A juvenile victim was transported to a nearby hospital by ground. It was the second day in a row part of the ice caves collapsed. Sunday one woman was recording when a same portion gave way to a group of hikers. Officials warn the public to stay away from the unstable and dangerous caves. Warmer than normal temperatures were melting the ice and snow months ahead of schedule. Sadly, this cavein was deadly with one person still buried inside. County Officials Say the cave area will be closed until further notice while they assess the area. And now while they recover the deceased individual. It is meticulous work making sure the Emergency Personnel are safe as well. Matt and hoda . Jacob rascon in washington state, thank you so much. Now moving to politics and donald trump doubling down on his controversial comments on immigration as the president ial candidates empire takes yet another blow. Donald trump is dismissing the latest company to cut ties with him, espn moving an upcoming celebrity Golf Tournament away from one of trumps courses. Not a big deal. Thats what trump said as he spoke out again on this issue, now driving a wedge into the republican party. At a Charity Golf Event monday night, donald trump teed off again on illegal immigration. Were talking about crime. You saw what happened the other day with the young lady in San Francisco. Its a disgrace. Reporter trump has seized on the random shooting death of kate steinle killed with her father last week. The alleged attacker a convicted felon, who federal Officials Say had been deported to mexico five times. [ speaking in spanish ]. Reporter in a jailhouse interview, Francisco Sanchez says he didnt remember what happened but didnt dispute that police said he did it. Of trump insisted steinles shooting was one of thousands of similar incidents throughout the United States. Later he added, Infectious Disease is pouring across the border. Theyre bringing crime, theyre rapists, and some i assume are good people. Reporter and in that statement, trump argued his controversial comments about undocumented immigrants are being deliberately distorted. Trump has quickly divided the republican party, desperate to win back latino voters. Just 27 supported mitt romneys failed campaign in 2012 down from 40 for george bush in 2004. Still, the billionaire whose comments have catapulted him to second place in recent polls says he isnt backing down. The Washington Post says many those building his newest hotel in washington, d. C. By a contractor say theyre undocumented workers who crossed the u. S. According to reports, democratic lawmakers in new jersey are planning to introduce legislation that would require christie to step down. They say hes been out of the state too much this year. The bill by the way, would also apply to any future governorses. And now to explosive new revelation tied to the bill cosby sex scandal. In newly released Court Documents from a 2005 deposition the comedian admits obtaining sedatives to use on women he wanted to have sex with. Nbc national correspondent, kate snow is here with more. Kate what do you have . Good morning. Cosbys lawyers have fought to keep these documents from being seen saying they would embarrass him and they were sealed for a decade now. After a request from the Associated Press a judge in philadelphia said because cosby so often got on a quote, soap box about moral issues he no longer has the right to keep these records private. Bill cosby in his own words admitting he obtained seven prescriptions for quaaludes in the 1970s and gave them to other people. In documents from a 2005 case cosby was being sued by a woman who accused him of drugging and Sexual Assaulting her. Before it was settled out of court and dismissed, cosby sat through a twoday deposition. When you got the quaaludes, was it in your mind you were going to use these quaaludes with young women you wanted to have sex with, the lawyer asked. Cosby replied yes. But it was unclear whether he forced women to take drugs. Did you ever give young women the quaaludes without their knowledge, he asked. Cosbys attorney jumped in do not answer that question. Cosby described one encounter in las vegas. She meets me backstage. I give her quaaludes, we then have sex. I wouldnt necessarily call this the proverbial smoking gun, but it is corroboration for the fact that he used drugs when attempting to have sex with women. So it does in a sense take the moral high ground from his position. Reporter for barb bowman one of 13 jane does in the case, its vindication. It was a big breath a big sigh of relief of hope. And looking forward to this next part of this journey, because i think this is really just the beginning. Reporter in the documents, the accusers attorney is complaining to a judge that cosbys lawyer was turning the deposition into a carnival a claim the judge later rejected. The plaintiffs attorney also said to cosby, i think youre making light of a very serious situation. Cosby replied, that may very well be. Nbc news reached out to attorneys and representatives of bill cosby and did not hear back. Cosby has never been charged with any crime of sexual and drug allegations which he and his representatives have continued to deny. A couple other things to come out in these Court Documents. Cosby offered to pay for the education of the 2005 accuser if she got a 3. 0 gpa or better and also confirmation of something we reported last fall that cosby agreed to give an exclusive interview to the National Enquirer years ago if they agreed to the to print a story. Sealed for ten years, this document this deposition now released and revealed. Why now . Basically, this has been revealed because the Associated Press sued for it and typically, if it you have something sealed in this kind of settlement or suit it is gone. We dont see it. The judge finding that because he was a public person making a sort of a morality crusade, this was fair game. Lets talk about the key exchange that kate just highlighted in her piece. When asked by the plaintiffs attorney, when you got the quaaludes, was it in your mind that you were going to use these quaaludes for young women that you wanted to have sex with. Cosby replies yes. So all the allegations that have come forward by women against bill cosby over the last many years now one day, one word yes. How does it change things legally for them . Legally, this is what they call an admission against interest. Here is bill cosby, saying that part of the fact pattern that has always been in dispute and alleged is, in fact true. That he did acquire these kind of drugs for this kind of reason. Thats an ingredient in some of the crimes alleged against him. So the other exchange though when asked by that same lawyer did you ever give any of those young women the quaaludes without their knowledge, and cosbys lawyer jumps in and says do not answer that question would that have been an admission of rape . It could be because it would go towards the idea that he was incapacitying people to have intercourse. And depending on the state, that alone can constitute rape. So if youre a prosecutor in a jurisdiction where a woman has brought an accusation against bill cosby, based on what youve heard this morning and read this morning, do you have cause to bring criminal charges against bill cosby . Most of the prosecutors who have looked at this including in pennsylvania where the underlying allegations exist, have said they didnt feel they had the evidence beyond a reasonable doubt. Pennsylvania and new jersey still have a shot clock ticking. The time has not run out, though to continue to look at criminal charges. Thats the criminal side in terms of civil suits against bill cosby. Does this open the door to more of those . Absolutely. The civil standard which we all know is lower, and this kind of documentation, coming from his own mouth and cosbys lawyers arent disputing the accuracy opens up i think a much stronger civil case. Lawmakers in South Carolina are one step closer to removing it from State Capitol ground. Today the state senate is expected to give final approval to a bill after the preliminary 373 vote in favor of lowering the flag. Says that would only inflame the wars in syria and iraq. But russia and china, they make money selling arms. And they want to lift that arms embargo in iran. Meanwhile, back home republican criticism from candidates is firing up. President ial candidate senator ted cruz is now calling on hillary clinton, who helps launch the talks in the first place when she was secretary of state and other republican candidates to demand that john kerry stop negotiating with what crews call a violent enemy of america and immediately come home. Kerry is not paying any attention to cruz but these talks could break down. Well be watching what happens in the next 24 hours or so. Thanks so much. The second csx train in as many weeks has derailed in tennessee. This time at least four cars came off the tracks. This happened near nashville. Three of the cars were carrying packaging beads. A fourth car was carrying steel. No Hazardous Materials were spilled. Fortunately, no one was injured there, as well. And last week another csx train car that was carrying toxic chemicals went off the rails near knoxville, catching fire and prompting thousands to evacuate. The southwest plane bound for San Francisco had to turn around and make an Emergency Landing in phoenix on monday night after the plane blew a tire on many landing gear. The boeing 737 landed safely and no one was injured. Passengers were then moved to a new plane. Sad news from hollywood. Famed movie producer Jerry Weintraub has died. He produced nashville karate kid and oceans 11 and produced for Elvis Presley and frank sinatra. He died monday of cardiac arrest in santa barbara, california and, and was 77 years old. A man in calgary, canada takes to the skies using only helium balloons and a cheap lawn chair. Now hes in trouble with police. Take a look. Daniel boria using this 10 chair and 101 helium balloons he says he was trying to draw attention to his cleaning products company. Probably got a lot of attention he did not want. Boria says he intended to par chute himself into the Calgary Stampede the citys famous rodeo. What could go wrong there . The weather did not cooperate for him. Louis, right down into texas, where we also have some flash flood watches and even some warnings in effect because we are still looking for more and more rain. A quarterback at Florida State university dismissed by the School Overnight after video surfaced of him punching a woman at a bar. Of we should warn you, this is disturbing. Nbcs Gabe Gutierrez has more. Reporter this morning, Florida State university quarterback Deandre Johnson is off the team and facing a charge of misdemeanor battery. It stems from an incident on june 24th at a tallahassee bar. In this newly released surveillance video, johnson is seen arguing with a woman. She then raises a fist. He grabs her arm. She tries to hit him. But he punches her in the face. He is very regretful he did not turn around and walk away immediately. Reporter according to Court Documents, the victim suffered bruising under her left eye, swelling to the left cheek and upper lip, and a small cut near the bridge of her nose. Johnsons Attorney Says while his client is embarrassed and apologetic apologetic the woman had yelled racial epithets at him. There is a witness that says heard this. And that did not invoke mr. Johnson to do anything. He had then tried to deescalate the situation. It wasnt until she struck him twice before he reacted. Reporter the woman declined to comment to nbc news. Its the latest in a string of football scandals. Ray rice was booted from the Baltimore Ravens last year when video surfaced of him punching his fiancee in an elevator. Johnson is also not the first fsu quarterback under scrutiny off the field. Jameis winston, now a top draft pick was accused of rape in 2012. He said the sex was consensual and was never charged. He has since filed a counterclaim against his accuser. As for johnson, his Attorney Says the 19yearold is now volunteering at a Domestic Violence shelter. The question we have to ask ourselves, do we want to teach our young adults that when they make a mistake, thats it your life is over or do we want to teach them that if you make a mistake and you learn from it that perhaps you might be given a second chance. Police say the boy was playing basketball with other kids in his driveway when he was hit in the foot by a stray bullet this happened on south 31st street. The boy was taken to the hospital. I was riding right behind jeff gordon and pushing all we could to the finish. The white flag had already come out and thought we were in a pretty good spot to get a good finish which we did. We came across the line in seventh, so i was proud of the finish but didnt want to be crossing the line in the air, by no means. Yeah you got banged around which is bad enough at those speeds. By the way, how fast were you going at that time . I havent really quite found out the exact speed, but ive heard 190, somewhere around there, 198. So you get banged around at that speed, its bad enough. But then the car goes airborne. Can you even begin to describe what that feels like in the pit of your stomach . Yeah no its not the greatest feeling in the. When world. When the first impact happened you tuck instantly and grab the wheel as hard as you can. When the car flips over you know its getting ready to be a rough ride. You hold on with all youve got, and when it hit the fence, i didnt really know where i was. I was still kind of holding on talking myself through the wreck. And after we landed back on the ground i was thinking it was almost over. And the worst part of the crash was actually the very end when the two cars slid into me. But it was pretty cool to see all the pics. Felt like the wreck happened and when it was over i thought i was done wrecking and there was somebody at my car. So youve seen the video, and is it weird to know youre the guy in that car . Yeah ive looked at the video, and all the pictures. Its definitely wild to look at. I want to thank everybody that built my car. I want to thank nascar for all the stuff they have done to make our sport safe. I mean you see a wreck like that and you shouldnt be talking to a person as early as you guys are talking to me today. I feel like its pretty cool that im just a little sore. I feel great, and im ready to race this weekend. You bring up nascar and theres a lot of criticism, austin, as you know about this racing restricter plate racing. Let me read some comments that have come out, referring to this in the last couple days. In referring to this driver ryan newman said quote, nascar got what they wanted. Thats the end of it. Cars getting airborne unsafe drivers, same old stuff. They just dont listen. Jeff gordon who you mentioned earlier, said quote, im glad i only have one restricter plate race left. And brandt james writing for usa today wrote this. Quote, simply and most importantly, this there a question for nascar as a sanctioning body and a sport. Is this acceptable. So let me ask you. Is it too fast too dangerous, does nascar have to change . Well, you know i want to first off say i love my sport in nascar. You know i get to do what i love on the weekends and race. And what they have done to make our cars safer after bad wrecks have happened i think, youll learn more from my wreck. They have the car now, and theyll be looking at it and see what happened the right way. I think, you know for this type of racing we probably could bring the speed down a little bit and get the same style of racing that we want to see out there for the fans. Obviously, we dont want cars getting in the air. So well work hard to do that and i think nascar has the people around them to make the right call. But restricter plate racing keeps cars bunched tightly together at high speeds. Is that something that can continue . You know i think we like to see the tight racing the pack type of racing its cool for the fans to watch. Its fun for our drivers to be a part of it, i think. I think the hardest part though you dont need the speed where we catch air. So its pretty tough decisions to make. We signed up for this as drivers when we sign in to what were wanting to do. While you were celebrating independence day, it actually happened. Nbc national correspondent, Miguel Almaguer explains. Reporter the alaska air command is on alert 365 days a year 24 7 just for this reason. Twice on the fourth of july air force f22 fighter jets intercepted longrange russian bombers, once off the coast of alaska and once off the coast of california. The men and women at joint base richardson in alaska recently gave us an exclusive look at how they are protecting americas borders in the air. Red alert on the alaskan frontier. Every second crucial. The mission, get airborne as fast as possible. Its adrenaline pumping time no doubt. Its exciting. For these pilots the job is a dangerous one. Seek and intercept russian bombers heading for american shores as they did twice on the fourth of july. A mission the alaskan air command performs an average of ten times a year. Last year russian bombers came within 50 miles of the west coast. It speaks to perhaps the intent from russian to be more provocative. Reporter this the first line of defense. A remote world war ii era radar installation at the westernmost tip of alaska. Were at the radar site and russian is 35 miles in that direction. There are 15 remote radar stations like this one scattered all across alaska. Theyre in some of the most remote and rugged terrain anywhere in the world. The radar sites are monitored at the 176th air Defense Squadron spotting any suspicious aircraft headed towards north american air space. And these are the pilots who answer the call of duty. Youre up close enough where you can see the other pilots in the cockpit, as well. Reporter using hand signals and tactical maneuvers, the f22 pilots steer the foreign bombers back towards russia, away from american shores. The American Public expects us to defend and maintain air sovereignty over the skies of alaska and the entire United States. And so were going to make sure we get the job done. Rather than relying solely on pin codes and passwords that might be stolen you would instead provide a photo make an online purchase. Photos would then be converted into a series of 1s and 0s and stored on mastercards computers. Then to authenticate identity for purchase you take a selfie on the mastercard app and blink. Blinking to make sure someone isnt just holding up a photo of you. The technology is much more accurate. This is a facial recognition expert. On the left a photo of him at a hockey game. Newly released Court Papers Reveal that bill cosby once admitted obtaining sedatives to give to women he wanted to sleep with. A judge has released documents from a 2005 case. Cosby was being sued by a woman who had accused him of drugging and assaulting her. That case was settled out of court. Cosby acknowledged under oath he once obtained prescriptions for quaaludes with the intention of giving them to young women and having sex. He confirmed doing that with one woman in the 1970s. Are you at risk at a higher risk of dying from serious illness or injury if you check into a hospital on the weekend . Its something called the weekend effect. And the Research Shows the answer in several countries, including the u. S. , is yes. The new study looked 3 million admissions between 2009 and 2012 from 28 metropolitan Teaching Hospitals in the u. S. England, the netherlands and australia. The Research Focused on deaths occurring in hospitals within 30 days of an emergency admission or planned elective surgery, and found that the risk of dying was higher on weekend hospital visits in three out of four countries. The risk was 13 higher in five u. S. Hospitals. 8 higher in 11 hospitals in england. And 20 higher in six dutch hospitals. And here with more is nbc medical contributor, dr. Natalie azar. Those numbers are shocking but it should go without saying if you have an emergency and it happens to be a weekend, you go. Of course of course. And, you know i want to say this. This finding has been observed over multiple studies over multiple years. There is probably not one single explanation. If you come in with a arrested yack arith mea that requires an intervention the hospital just might not be staffed as well as it is during the week. But obviously, if you have an emergency, youre going in. Lets talk about some other things. Were going to move down here. The july effect. This is a time where new doctors, interns and things like that are in training. You should be aware of that. Correct, hoda. And as opposed to the weekend effect which we have established is true, the july effect is a little more controversial. Some studies suggest it really does exist, some studies suggest it doesnt. But the whole basis of this is that the Academic Year for medical trainees starts on july 1st. That means that every year, june 30th to july 1st, there is a whole switchover of, you know, doctors who are taking care of you. Theyre getting used to new Electronic Medical records, theyre inexperienced. I should say, there is a lot of supervision that still happens. So you may not want to schedule something elective on july 1st give it a couple weeks. Again, a little controversial. There are Teaching Hospitals out there. And one of the key questions to ask is who is actually doing the operating, because sometimes the less experienced people may be in the operating room as well. 100 . And this if you are admitted and getting a procedure done in whats called a University Academic Teaching Hospital you have to assume there will be residents who are taking care of you, as well as the attending physician. This is very relevant when it comes to surgery. I have to say, though there have been many studies that have looked into the safety comparing these kinds of two hospital systems, and it actually looks like in some cases that you know hospitals that have residents actually perform better than the hospitals that dont. A lot of surgeons obviously are there, and theres constant supervision. But its just something to keep in mind. And quickly, you should always have an advocate whether its elective surgery, emergency surgery, someone who can ask the right question. Absolutely. You want to have a Family Member or friend somebody to prep questions, take notes. Youre in a stressful situation when youre in the hospital. You may not be you know taking everything in. You want to have somebody there who is an advocate. I had that. My sister with me if she didnt take notes, i dont know what would have happened. And lastly quickly, have an emergency plan. Absolutely. Things can go wrong, doesnt matter what age you are. When you are admitted into the hospital you have have an advanced directive. Theres no overwhelming evidence to indicate that happier people are actually healthier. Reporter dr. Davidson insists, you can retrain your brain to be happier. Even at work. It was time to introduce the doctor from the center for investigating healthy minds. Today im going to be teaching you some simple practices that you can use to really cultivate your wellbeing. Reporter its going to be a tough challenge, because our wellbeing is under attack. The average adult spends approximately 47 of their waking day not paying attention to what theyre doing. And it gets worse. The average Office Worker gets interrupted every three minutes. And after that interruption it takes us on average 23 minutes to get back on track. But as it turns out, there are three numbers that could change your life and make you happier. 5, 3 and 1. First, five minutes of meditation. When your mind wanders, just bring it back to the breath. Reporter learning to meditate can turn off the noise and allow our brains to recover. And there is science to back it up. In as little as 30 days 20 minutes of this kind of practice actually strengthens and builds more gray matter in the prefrontal cortex which is the area of the brain associated with attention, emotion regulation and executive functioning or decision making. Reporter next number three. Write down three good things that happen to you every day. Our brains tend to focus on the negative. But if you make the effort to focus on the positive you begin to see more positives. The research here just in a week people reported being 2 happier after reporting three good things a day. Research shows the happiest workers are those that build personal connections to their colleagues. We started off with a few scattered showers. Now its sunshine breaking through the clouds to heat things up. The radar screen shows the immediate area is clear, but that might not be the case all day. Theres a chance well see some showers and possibly thunderstorms later today. Already into the 80s. 81 now in northeast philadelphia. Millville also up to 81 degrees. And it will be close to 90 degrees this afternoon. Hot, humid conditions and occasional showers. Philadelphia police are still trying to find the person who fired a stray bullet that hit a 6yearold boy. It happened just before midnight in the grays ferry section of the city. The boy was playing basketball with other kids in his driveway when a bullet hit him in the foot. The boy is in stable condition. No description of the shooter. Police tell us theyre relying on witness statements now. Also police are investigating a murder not far from where that 6yearold boy was shot. Police say someone shot a 38yearold man numerous times, killing him and also shot another man in the leg. Police found 22 shell casings at the scene near 28th street. They say there is no connection between that shooting and the bullet that hit the boy. This morning investigators will continue to look for the cause of this fire that destroyed one business and damaged others in upper darby just before 6 00 p. M. Yesterday. Payless shoe source on south 69th went up in flames. Crews evacuated about two dozen homes nearby. A firefighter was taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion but is expected to be okay. Newly released Court Documents quoting cosby in a 2005 deposition admitting he obtained sedatives to give to women he wanted to sleep with. Cosby said he, quote, obtained seven prescriptions for quaaludes, that was in the 1970s and gave them to other people as well. Cosbys lawyers have fought to keep these documents from being seen by anyone. They were sealed for about a decade. This deposition as i said, was in 05. But finally released after of a request by the Associated Press. Cosby was being sued in the case by a woman who accused him of drugging and sexually assaulting her. Before it was settled out of court and dismissed, cosby sat through a twoday deposition where these admissions were made. The plaintiffs lawyers asked in one instance, when youve got the quaaludes, was it in your mind you were going to use the quaaludes for young women that you wanted to have sex with. Cosby replied, yes. The lawyer also asked, did you ever give any of those young women the quaaludes without their knowledge. Cosbys attorney at that point jumps in and says do not answer that question. Nbc news reached out to attorneys and reps of bill cosby didnt hear back. Cosby has never been charged with any crime in connection with sexual or drug allegations. He and his representatives continue to deny. I was watching tv last night and some women were on television saying these were alleged victims who have been speaking for years, and trying to have their voices heard. And they heard discredited for years. They heard the information in that deposition and they said that story rings true to me. I dont understand how the legal system works here, that if someone makes that kind of admission in a deposition how is that sealed . If youre admitting to what everyone would call rape, and we can say sex scandal, controversy, but that description, if its accurate and is true, would be described as Sexual Assault. So if thats true, how does that stay sealed . I mean, that seems like such a flaw in the justice system, that a document can be sealed to protect some wealthy person or some famous person, again, if its true, because i have to say that that it gets swept under . And with so many other women who have made these same allegations, more than two dozen women at this point. You know, it gets you wonder how all these why isnt there lawyers who are there, why wouldnt they be legally bound to then contact authorities . I know these are broad questions and im just kind of throwing it out there. Part of the settlement. So there is money on the table, i guess and it never went to trial. So part of the deal was they kept the documents sealed. I get that. But i feel like thats a loophole in the legal system. If someone admits a crime in a deposition, its not like the hipaa law where, you know, talking about your medical history. Why is that loophole there if you admit to a crime . Im sure someone will answer on twitter. Thats when i kept thinking last night. In addition to what i thought were strange comments from the judge on why he chose to unseal them. Right. The judge in the case, i guess the Associated Press sued to have the deposition relieved. And the judge in the case cited that because of the moral issues and because cosby has always been outspoken on morality issues, and hes a public figure, he felt that therefore the presumption is that these comments, what cosby said in his deposition, should be made public. So interesting. Icky. It is icky. And you feel like it may open up the floodgates. For civil, not criminal as you pointed out. Well see if he actually bill cosby gives an interview or not. So this room looks twice as big. All right. And i also love the bar cart. You say thats a great accessory right . Bar carts are huge. They dont take up a lot of space and its a separate destination. Well flip through this next one. Here is a dining room before. Point out what you think needed work there. This was again a very pretty room. It fell a little flat for me so we brought in some color and pattern. Lets check out the after. Pretty. All we did here was we did a rug, the wrug the geometric pattern, a new table and chairs and these were very inexpensive vases and bowls. By bringing in fresh flute and flowers it brought life to that room. And this was very inexpensive. And you also mix metals. You said thats good to do. I like mixing metals. The copper the rose gold, the antique brassment its okay to miss. I do have this rule of three. Three of everything. So no more than three bold patterns. No more than three bold colors. If you dont want to use cashews swap them out for almonds. If you dont want to use spinach and you want to get healthier you can add kale or arugula. Do this always make sure to put a lid on top. Can i ask about nuts . You can use any kind of nuts or do these uhoh. There we go, all right. So grind that up. And then that makes this creamy slishs delicious sauce right here. Now make our pasta.
