Good evening. For many americans, a Summer Holiday weekend is best spent outdoors. The chance to relax in the fresh air. Catch up with family and friends. Yet there are sober reminders tonight that something as carefree as a gathering on the deck can invite serious danger. Millions of decks across the country are aging, making them vulnerable to collapse. In North Carolina on saturday night, two dozen family members ages 5 to 94 were injured when the deck they were standing on plunged to the ground. Nbcs Dave Gutierrez has more from emerald isle, North Carolina. I need all the ambulances i can get. Reporter dispatchers got the first panicked calls around 7 00 p. M. Saturday. I was on the phone with 911, so i just counted people on the ground and i counted up to 21 and i just said you just need to get as many ambulances as you can here. All off duty personnel report to station 45. Reporter a deck holding at least two dozen people including children, had collapsed. They went to take a family photo and they were all standing there taking the photo and it collapsed. Reporter the injured range from 5 to 94 years old. We had a lot of people on top of each other. Reporter the family mostly from virginia had rented this property for the holiday weekend. They were standing on this corner of the deck. This is where a section of that deck came crashing down. It fell about 12 feet. Neighbors say it happened in inan stand. Over the past decade 4600 emergency room visits were associated with deck collapses. In the u. S. An estimated 40 million residential decks and 10 million commercial ones are more than 20 years old. This isnt the first time weve seen this happen. From kentucky to rhode island and indiana, where this group also trying to take a family photo plunged 15 feet. Experts say there are easy ways to check your deck. Look for split or decaying wood. Paying special attention to areas that stay damp. Push on railings and bannisters to make sure theres no give. And make sure all fasteners are tight and not rusted. Late today authorities in North Carolina said preliminary findings suggest thats what appears to have caused this collapse. Basically due to deteriorated fasteners. Or nails. Reporter most of the 24 injured have been tweeted at hospitals and released. But tonight, two of them remain in critical condition. Gabe gutierrez, nbc news emerald isle, North Carolina. They are a familiar sight above americas beaches. Small planes carrying banner ads, going up and down the shoreline. Yesterday in california one of those planes ran into trouble, and had to make an Emergency Landing right on the beach. Nbcs joe fryer has more tonight. He was, you know dazed. Crews quickly turned the plane upright before toeing it away. Very upset. Jim oakleys company air ads owns the aircraft. This airplane i expected more than last week. Everything was perfect. It flew yesterday and everything was fine. Investigators will now try to figure out what went wrong, just three years ago over the memorial day holiday, a banner towing plane owned by a Different Company crashed into the San Diego Bay near a waterfront hotel. Miraculously, both people on board survived. As for this latest close call it could have been worse. Reporter witnesses are grateful more people were not hurt by the surprise from the sky.
