Ron Arico of Poughkeepsie, a former full-time deputy sheriff in the county, said then-sheriff Lawrence Quinlan introduced him to Liddy, who at the time was an assistant district attorney.
"I heard him speak a couple times," Arico recalled. "And he was the one who inspired me to go into law enforcement. He's a part of history. I couldn't not be here."
Tom O'Neill, of Wappingers Falls, knew Liddy in a professional capacity.
"He was my attorney before he went to Washington," O'Neill said. "He always cared about everybody."
As an assistant district attorney in Dutchess County in the 1960s, Liddy gained a reputation for fighting drug use, even arresting Timothy Leary, who was well-known for his psychedelic experiments with the therapeutic use of LSD in the Town of Washington.
