Tap water is central to just about everything you do at home, from drinking to showering to cooking. You’ll probably never go a day without using it. But how much can you really trust your home’s drinking water?
Local water utilities are required by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to test their systems for over 90 contaminants and release annual safety bulletins called consumer confidence reports. But bacteria, lead, and mercury, among others, still slip through, exposing communities like Flint, Michigan to contaminated water for prolonged periods, which has been linked to problems like gastrointestinal illnesses, organ damage, and even cancer.
