Tararua residents are being urged to conserve water, as a lack of rain puts them at risk of harsh water restrictions.
Tararua District Council put alternate evening restrictions in place from Thursday, meaning people can only use handheld hoses or cans between 7pm and 9pm on alternate days.
People with even street numbers can only water on even days, and odd numbers on odd days.
Akitio, however, has a total outdoor ban until April 7 – a usual measure for the town.
