This marvellous postbop album is the third by Walter Smith III to have the word “casual” in the title, which is something of a puzzle. For he is one of America’s most intense tenor saxophonists: deep-thinking, dramatic and drawing on the powerful influences of, among others, Johnny Griffin, Wayne Shorter and John Coltrane. Reuniting the commanding quintet from Still Casual (2014), this set is anti-relaxing in the best possible way.
