The mayor said when it comes to the health of new yorkers, he wont take any chances. The new law requires the registration, inspection and disinfection of new and existing cooling towers. Cooling towers were believed to be the source of the outbreak. Today marks new york city becoming the first major city in the United States to regulate cooling towers so that we can protect against legionnaires disease. The mayor says the aim of the new law is to eliminate the legionella bacteria before there is another outbreak. Building owners that violate it will face harsh penalties. The system was shut down after the attacks in may. They believe the hacks started in february. It wasnt just names that were stolen. Dates of birth and Social Security numbers were also swiped. And the allimportant personal information you fill in on tax forms,ing salaries, places of employment, where you live, married or not, with or without kids.
