Happening today a meeting of the minds in an effort to fix the massive problem leading to huge delays for commuters who rely on the rail tunnel under the hudson river. Dray clark is live in newark with what is ahead, dray . Reporter good morning, ken. Later on today, Anthony Johnson fox will meet with governor christie along with smear menendez and booker and the topic of discussion will be the gateway project. It is that multibillion dollar plan that calls for building a new hudson river tunnel, a project that many believe is desperately needed now. There was a plan in the works but in 2010 governor christie pulled state funding because of possible cost overruns. There are two rail tunnels and they are more than a century old and in dire need of repair. A new Jersey Transit train with 200 passengers got stuck inside the tunnel causing significant delays for morning commuters then last month a series of electrical problems inside the tunnel caused days of delays and diversions. Superstorm sandy is getting much of the blame for causing a lot of the damage to the tunnels in recent years. Amtrak operates the rails and tunnels and equipment that is used by new Jersey Transit. Last week an amtrak official told new jersey lawmakers that because of the tunnels age and years of wear and tear there could be a lot more problems ahead. So,ing the only solution that many say is to build a new tunnel and fix the older ones. That is a plan that some estimate could cost up to 20 billion. A big part of the conversation will be who will pay this large bill. They are hoping the u. S. Department of transportation will pick up about 80 of the bill and then the state of new jersey and new york will work out the rest. We should mention Governor Cuomo was invited to todays meeting but he declined. Live in newark this morning, dray clark, channel 7 Eyewitness News. Thank you, dray. There is a meeting in new jersey a few hours from now that commuters hope will one day stop situations like yesterdays transit mess. Dray clark is live with details. Reporter u. S. Secretary of transportation anthony fox will host the meeting when governor christie and Robert Menendez and cory booker. They will talk about the gateway project. The gateway project is the multibillion dollar plan that calls for building a new hudson river tunnel that many believe is desperately needed. There are two rail tunnels and they are each more than 100 years old and in dire need of major repair. Yesterday a new Jersey Transit train was stuck inside the tom causing significant delays. Then, of course, last month there was a series of delays because of electrical problems and that caused days of delays. Many people say the only reasonable thing to do is to go ahead and build a new tunnel but that would cost by some estimates up to 20 billion.
