Reporter as the explosions got out, they realized they needed to move. The driver dazed and confused started picking up loose change that fell out of his jeans in the middle of the turnpike. After checking out the burns on his leg he headed to the ambulance 100 yards away. He was still in shock. Horrific. A close call. Like jackie said, thats what you do. The new York City Council vowed today to require inspections and testing on all cooling towers which are breeding grounds for legionnaires. Reporter bill, the officers at the 43rd precinct are some of the first to receive the new smartphones and technology. In fact, its paying off. Today alone it lead to two arrests. You are about to meet the two officers that made the first arrest with the new technology. The call came in as an officer in pursuit and in a matter of seconds, other officers from the 43rd precinct began responding. From the nypds new smartphone technology, officers learned of a warrant for the suspects arrest. Very strong tool. Huge asset to the department. Reporter one of the first to be trained, Police Officer Edward Espinal embraces the Crime Fighting tool that will provide all 35,000 officers on the force with the domain awareness system. We have access to the department of Motor Vehicles, 911 calls. Reporter august 5th, minutes after getting the smartphones and training, officer espinal and officer foley started watching the 911 calls. I observed a fight on westchester and morrison, a couple of blocks away. A phone number attached to the 911 call. Reporter the officer called it and spoke to an ems worker who described the suspect. He radioed other officers. Responding officers went that direction, recovered the weapon used in the crime and able to locate the person. Reporter the officers believe it took five minutes from seeing the first 911 call on the phone to the arrest the suspect giving the officers immediate access to victims and not having to wait for radio contact speeds the work significantly. With the number right in front much you, make the phone call r dial the number. You have the witness or victim in the palm of your hand. It can help an officer with translation if there is a language barrier, too, working in realtime safes the officers critical time. The officer sees this as a huge push forward. I think this is definitely going to increase the departments success in years to come. Reporter others tracked a robbery suspect and made an arrest today. They passed out at this point roughly 3,000 phones to the officers and they hope to have all 35 officers equipped with the smartphones by spring of next year.
