You talk about people getting their power back, folks who live in this neighborhood just want to go down their street and access their homes right now. You can see this is the corner of christian avenue and triangle drive. Several trees, maybe a dozen trees are down that have knocked downpour lines making this treacherous and completely impassible. This is another street where several dozen people live in this direction. People just want to be able to get down their street but it looks 24 hours after this storm like it just passed through 10 minutes ago. This tree is on another tree thats on a transformer line. Reporter the only way for kim and mark brando to get to and from home is to navigate a dangerous path of twisted branches and hopefully dormant power lines. Otherwise theyre still waiting for power crews to render it all safe. We assumed theyd send a lot of people out because it was so or other storms that weve had. Reporter the small water communities dotting brookhavens north shore looked like they were in the immediate aftermath of a hurricane. After the sun came up, you could see some of the damage from dronecam7. Despite the entire day to make a dent this is devastation. Reporter the highway supervisor is beyond frustrated. Every 20, 30 feet theres another tree like this. Theyre just fiddlesticks on top of each other. Reporter cant remove the trees until they clear the power lines. My crews could be doing more but for the fact that we need the Additional Resources from the crews from the Utility Company to cut the trees off the lines. Reporter it said it had, quote, more than 400 to 500 workers performing restoration. All hands were on deck and every resource was in suffolk county. We did see one crew in stony brook but the brandos say they were expecting a cavalry in their community and they havent seen it yet. Hopefully pseg can increase their lack of response. Its not quite clear how many people have decided to stay in their homes for the night. Weve heard the humming of generators in the distance. Theyre accustomed to Power Outages but not accustomed to a lack of response, at least as they see it. Pseg reports they have restored power to 3 4s of long islanders but about 18,000 customers remain. Those are people in this especially hard hit area who are hoping to get help at least tomorrow. Nearly 12 hours after a fiery crash in linden that killed one person. Cars backed up for miles in both directions all night. The mess all caused when a dump truck struck an overpass, then burst in to flames. The victim is believed to be the trucks driver. Looking live from the airport, traffic starting to move again. A Turnpike Authority spokesman just telling us everything should be cleared for the morning rush. A power line was damaged in this crash out of there and thats all burned. People who lived through this mess today hopefully will find the road flowing freely tomorrow morning. Southbound routes 1 and 9 are closed right now, wilson avenue blocking that route for drivers trying to take a detour. And another live picture now. You can see the traffic backed up at the top of your screen because of a different truck fire that happened tonight. Crews are working right now to repair a giant sinkhole that swallowed a street in brooklyn. A hole formed this morning after a huge water main break in sunset park. The sinkhole is massive, about 20 by 20 by 20 feet. To put that size of this in to perspective, its big enough to hold three midsize cars with plenty of room to spare. Every day hed walk up 1 frightening street to catch a bus. So every day hed walk past the beautiful Opera House Hotel on 149th street. Its one of several places where cooling towers tested positive for legionella. Reporter she was with her husband for 43 years. Now she and her family sit in a dark bronx apartment wondering what happened. Suddenly on thursday carmelo was too weak to answer the door of his home. Probably at the door 7 minutes when i told my brother he had to go downstairs and get someone to open the door for us. When they finally came up, he was on the floor. Reporter carmelo died from legionnaires disease. He had a number of preexisting conditions like asthma and diabetes. The ideal host for the disease to rage unchecked, but the family blames the city. I feel that they were in a way negligent because the first time that they found out about it, they could have just started doing something about it before letting it spread all over throughout the bronx. This is not the time to let an older member of your family say i dont want to go to the doctor. This is the time we have to really encourage people to seek care. Reporter the city says its made Real Progress combatting the spread of the disease which they say is spread by a mist which comes from cooling towers like one here at the Opera House Hotel near where he lived and one here at lincoln hospital. Legionella bacteria. We have identified the only sites that are causing this outbreak and again, they have all been cleaned. We should see, beginning in about a weeks time, declining numbers of cases. We all know that last night in red hook, five people got shot. And the other night, nine people got shot in east new york. We cannot have that. Reporter three women and two men were caught in the crossfire of a gun shootout in red hook monday night. 19yearold houston is in critical condition. She was four months pregnant and lost that baby. The expectant father, 21yearold Devon Callahan and his sister deanna smith were also hit outside their home. They were standing, waiting for the chinese food to come. We have new video just in to Eyewitness News giving us a good look tonight at a suspect wanted for a string of burglaries in manhattan. Cops say the man has broken in to at least six apartments in midtown since february. During the latest burglary a few weeks ago, the man caught on surveillance at a fire escape. For the first time were hearing the 911 calls made after a new jersey state trooper opened fire on three teenagers outside his home. Hes in the middle of the street. I swerved because i didnt want to hit him and he shot my car three times. The shooting happened in sparta last month after the teens mistakenly knocked on the troopers door. The teens ran when the trooper came out with a gun. The trooper fired three shots as the teens drove away and a 911 call, the troopers wife claims the driver tried to run her husband down. He was banging on our front and backdoor, my husband is a state trooper. I woke him up and he got went outside, fired three shots. The car almost hit him. Hes in his car pursuing them. The teenaged driver claims he swerved to avoid the trooper who was standing in the street. No one was hurt in the shooting and so far no charges have been filed. The family of a woman found dead in a jail cell has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the trooper who arrested that woman, sandra bland, and other authorities her family blamed for her death. The autopsy found the 28yearold woman committed suicide, hanging herself in her jail cell last month after she was arrested for a traffic stop, but her family disputes that finding. High pressure is going to build in over the next one to two days and then were going to watch this broad area of low pressure track to our south. Well be on the northern fringe of it.
