Seven people so far have died from this disease. 81 others have gotten sick. Five cooling towers in the bronx have tested positive now for legionnaires. Those towers getting clean, but none of them definitely the source of this outbreak. Eyewitness News Reporter josh einiger in the bronx where people tonight packing a town hall meeting. Theres a lot of concern out there, especially on social media since ive posted about two hours ago on facebook about this topic. Nearly a thousand people have weighed in or shared the post here at the town hall meeting. The Health Department saw more people than they saw at a similar meeting about ebola several months ago. New tonight, we hear from the mother of one legionnaires patient who for the past week has been fighting for his life. Reporter for 40yearold ramel hagan, it was a 991 a 911 call that meant life or death. His sugar was up. They said it was some kind of bacteria and a bad strain of pneumonia. Reporter he was already in a medically induced coma by the time doctors figured out he had legionnaires disease, just in time to save him. The epidemic blamed for three more lives, the death toll rising to 7, with so many people packed in to a town hall meeting on doctors had to go outside to answer questions from those who couldnt make it in. Turns out even the experts are stumped. Why this big of an outbreak with this many people who have suffered in just these neighborhoods . We dont know the answer right now. Health Officials Say theyve tracked the bacteria to mist from as many as five cooling towers. Workers have decontaminated all five towers but it can take as long as 10 days between exposure and onset of symptoms. They expect more cases to emerge before the numbers finally fall. Vivian says ramel has turned the corner. Hes off the ventilator but it will be a long recovery after a terrifying week. Im trying not to get emotional now. He was very sick and they kept using the term critically sick and hes slowly Getting Better but hes going to be in icu for a while. Health officials stressed over and over tonight that the water is safe to drink in the bronx, indeed all across the five boroughs. Air conditioned air is safe to breathe, this is just mist that comes off the cooling towers of roofs of some buildings. If you dont have an underlying medical condition like most of these patients, youll likely never come down with any symptoms at all. Josh einiger, channel 7 Eyewitness News. This new one happening tonight at the lancaster fairgrounds in new hampshire. Crashing down on several spectators during a severe storm killing two people. At least 15 others are hurt. Investigators arent scene. Yesterday a 35yearold man was killed when strong winds caused a tent at a festival to collapse outside chicago. 15 others were hurt. Developing right now, a 12yearold girl is in Critical Condition after she and her mother were pulled from the waters off the beach in the rockaways tonight. Park visitors called police when the two werent able to swim back to shore. They were pulled from the water by police and folks in the beach. We saw two people lying on the beach and they were trying to revive them. Then immediately they took the first person and jetted. I want to say eight men to the helicopter, then the second person was likelying there. They were taken to Staten Island community hospital. A 62yearold man was also pulled from a separate area. Hes also in Critical Condition. New at 11 00, disturbing and frightening allegations of child abuse tonight. A 20monthold boy picked up at a Daycare Center in new jersey by parents who say he was beaten up. Police in jersey city looking at whether an older child attacked the toddler. The boys parents say at first when they got that call from the daycare they were told it was a minor incident between their toddler son and another child about when they got here they say that story changed and his injuries were far worse than they thought. Reporter it was brandon holmes, jr. s second day at daycare. The 20monthold woke up from a nap and started playing with a toy, when his parents say a 7yearold girl got upset with the toddler and attacked him thursday afternoon, scratching his face and arms. You see him get down, you see her go like that. This young boy got mauled. If you look at his ear, his ear looks like pretty badly hurt. His face scratched up, his arms scratched. Reporter his parents and attorney say surveillance shows it took several minutes for an adult to notice what happened here at cradle to crayons Learning Center in jersey city. You dont really see anybody for like a good 5 to 10 minutes plus. Reporter a Police Report was filed. The department of children and families was notified. The owner tells me he fired the worker who was directly in charge of supervising these children, saying to me over the phone, he followed the law. Brandons parent say their son is now cautious around older children. We just hope that everybody do the right thing, everybody tell the truth because hes an innocent child and shouldnt have to come pick him up, especially on his second day looking like this. The suv she was in drove in to a grassy median then rolled several times. An off duty cop from new jersey Crime Fighting off the clock while visiting manhattan and then saving a woman from an attacker. Officer ryan duvale from camden saw the victim getting assaulted by a homeless man at 55th and 10th in hells kitchen. The officer ran over, stopped the attack, then held the suspect till new york cops arrived. Im always checking my surroundings. Police tonight say the woman from texas was visiting the site saturday when she told police she had guns in her bag. Officers found two semi automatic pistols. The woman reportedly had a permit to carry the guns in her home state but it is not recognized here. Shes been charged with criminal possession of a weapon.
