Ayor Makur Chuot, 31, was a long way from the Kenyan refugee camp her family lived in for nearly a decade on Saturday night as she realised she would soon be elected to the West Australian Parliament.
Surrounded by a boisterous crowd of Labor die-hards at Seafood Nation at Hillarys Boat Harbour and watching Liberal seats tumble, the accountant and former model running for the upper house said she started to get excited when she saw Hillarys candidate Caitlin Collins would take the traditional blue-ribbon seat.

“I knew if we had a big swing from Caitlin’s section and also other bigger areas, it means I was going to have a big chance of getting in the upper house,” she said.
