SOMERSET — Kathy Souza will be the town's newest member of the Board of Selectmen after she won Monday's special election with 57% of the vote.
“I’m thrilled with the results. It was a tough fight," she said. "I want to thank Melissa (Terra) for running a clean race."
Souza won 1,200 of the 2,118 ballots cast, beating out her sole opponent, former School Committee member Melissa Terra.
Souza, a leader of the group Save Our Bay Brayton Point and the Director of Environmental Health and Safety at Roger Williams University, ran on increasing the town's economic development and halting the operations of the private company that's currently using the dock at Brayton Point to process and ship scrap metal.
