In his book, âInside Out Coaching,â Joe Ehrmann outlined examples of the diverse characteristics of some of the most impactful coaches and leaders of his life as an athlete. One of the most interesting examples he referenced is Dorothy from âThe Wizard of Oz.â Erhmann, who was a star for the former Baltimore Colts, and a nationally recognized high school coach, expressed admiration for the fictional characterâs honest and empathetic approach to team building.
Of course, Dorothy is dreaming, and we know that in her dreams, the collection of characters, the Tin Man, Scarecrow and Cowardly Lion are manifestations of her own self-perceived deficiencies. And on her journey of self-discovery and personal development, she begins to cobble together the diverse gifts already existing inside her, by coaching up her imaginary team, and ultimately, embodying those talents herself.
