Vernon College president proposes tax on Wichita County residents
Johnston said programs will stagnate without more money
Vernon College wants Wichita County residents to pick up part of the tab for educating county students.
VC president Dusty Johnston went before the Wichita County Commissioners’ Court Friday to propose putting a property tax on voters’ ballots.
Johnston said state funding of community colleges has declined and tuition has increased at a time when most VC students live in Wichita County, not Wilbarger County where main VC campus is located.
“The reality is over 66 percent of our enrollment has a Wichita County zip code. The bulk of our operation is in Wichita County,” Johnston said.
