WASHINGTON — Rep. Val Demings, a former police chief in her third term in Congress, is expected to run for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Republican Marco Rubio in 2022.
The three-term Democrat will formally announce soon, according to one of her advisors. The news was first reported by Politico.
Demings confirmed her interest in a tweet later Tuesday.
"I am humbled at the encouraging messages I'm seeing today," she said, adding, "I'm seriously considering a run for the Senate. Stay tuned."
Demings, elected to the House in 2016, was on Joe Biden's short list of vice presidential candidates last year. She represents a district in the Orlando area, which is an important territory in the crucial battleground state of Florida.
