US vetoes UN call for 'immediate' ceasefire in Gaza

The United States has vetoed a resolution at the UN Security Council calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. Washington blocked a proposal put forward by Algeria which it called “wishful and irresponsible”. The resolution did not link a ceasefire to the release of hostages.
