REPORTER: THE NEW LASER EYE CENTER AT UOFL HEALTH IS ONE OF -- U OF L HEALTH IS ONE OF JUST 3 MEIDCAL CENTERS IN THE COUNTRY USED TO TRAIN RESIDENTS ON LASER EYE SURGERY PROCEDURES. >> THE REASON WHY LASER SURGERY IS SO MUCH BETTER THAN GLASSES AND CONTACTS IS THAT THERE ARE MAJOR OPTICAL ERRORS OR THE EYE -- OF THE EYE AND MINOR, AND YOU CANT FIX THAT WILL GLASSES, BUT -- CAN’T FIX THAT WILL GLASSES, BUT THE LASER CAN DO IT. REPORTER: DR. RICHARD EIFERMAN FIRST STARTED LAYING THE GROUNDWORK FOR LASER EYE TECHNOLOGY IN 1989. TODAY, HE’S ONE OF THE FEW DOCTORS IN THE COUNTRY CERTIFIED TO TEACH RESIDENTS HOW TO DO IT. >> WE CAN USE THE LASER IN 2 MODES. THE FIRST IS A THERAPUETIC MODE, WHERE WE CAN PUT IT IN POLISHING MODES AND USE IT TO GET RID OF SCAR TISSUE, CALCIUM DEPOSITS AND THE LIKE. >> THE MORE COMMON USE IS FOR CORRECTIVE SIGHT SURGERY AND STIGMATISM. REPORTER: THE NEW SITE AT U OF L HEALTH MEDICAL CENTER EAST IN ST. MATTHEWS WILL OFFER TRAINING TO RESIDENTS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF LOUISVILLE AND THE UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY. AND PROCEDURES THERE, ARE ALREADY UNDERWAY STARTING THIS MONTH. DR. EIFERMAN SAYS THANKS TO A PARTNERSHIP WITH JOHNSON AND JOHNSON, THERE ARE FINANCIAL INCENTIVES FOR PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY. >> THIS GIVES ACCESS TO ALL THE UNIVERSITY STAFF AND STUDENTS TO GET DISCOUNTED LASER SURGERY AND ALLOWS A NEW VENUE FOR OTHER PATIENTS FROM ALL OVER THE AREA TO BE REFERRED INTO JEWISH.
