With the UN Protection Site in Bentiu having transitioned into a more conventional camp for internally displaced people (IDPs), United Nations Police (UNPOL) officers are working closely together with local policing counterparts to ensure the safety and security of displaced persons residing here.
“Our job as UNMISS continues to be the same,” said Mutasem Almajali, Deputy Police Commissioner of the UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan, on a recent visit to Bentiu. “We are here to make sure civilians are protected and that that our interlocuters from the South Sudan National Police Services are equipped with every skill they require to make sure that displaced people living in the camp are secure.”
