It’s a familiar sports adage to take games one at a time. You don’t always hear it from coaches of first-place teams, though.
For East Central coach Eric Vasquez, it’s a truism in District 27-6A. The district is stacked from top to bottom, in baseball and most other sports.
The Hornets (15-5-2, 7-0) were tied with Smithson Valley (19-3, 7-0) for the district lead after defeating Judson 5-1 April 6. East Central took the lead in the bottom of the fifth when two runs scored on passed balls. Ace pitcher Brian Forke shut down the Rockets (4-9, 2-5) the rest of the way.
