Two tonnes of fireworks created 3000 effects above Wellington in 10 minutes to mark the rising of seven winter stars.
The Wellington City Council dropped the city's annual November 5 Guy Fawkes fireworks display in favour of Matariki, the Māori New Year, in 2018. This year's event cost $150,000.
Pyrotechnician Robert McDermott, from Pyrostar, said the wind died down just in time and the skies were clear to make for a perfect fireworks night on Saturday.
“When you get perfect weather like that it makes it so much more spectacular,” he said.
