TROY — Troy officials have approved a settlement in a class-action lawsuit brought against the city, Oakland County’s George W. Kuhn Drainage District, and nine other municipalities related to the 2014 and 2017 floods.
Residents across Oakland County sued the county and 10 cities claiming the floods caused economic damage — property damage, personal property damage, and out of pocket expenses — to their residences. They claimed the sewer systems were defective and unprepared for that much rain.
The Troy City Council approved the settlement at its Jan. 11 meeting.
An $11.5 million settlement was reached between the residents and the municipalities, with $8.5 million being funded by drainage district money. The other $3 million was split by the 10 cities. Troy’s portion of the settlement agreement equals $34,333.
