Township leaders have been in the news in Becker County recently, representing their areas in a dispute with the city of Detroit Lakes over platting and zoning in the two-mile radius area around Detroit Lakes.
The stories have been front-page news in the Tribune, clearly showing the importance of townships in representing their residents.
The Minnesota Association of Townships General Counsel Steve Fenske provided some interesting information about townships:
There are approximately 914,174 township residents in Minnesota.
Townships exist in every area of the state, including the metropolitan area.
Some, with populations of more than 1,000, function in much the same way as a small city. While many townships remain rural agricultural centers, others host a variety of residential, light commercial, and industrial development.
