Sugar cane farmers around the Teche Area are reporting an upsurge in bulky items illegally dumped in fields as the cane grows higher. Farmers are having to stop harvesting the crop to clear the trash from the fields and call parish and law enforcement officials, according to Teche Growers Association member Ricky Gonsoulin. Among the items the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office photographed in fields are a boat trailer, mattresses, furniture, tires and appliances such as washers and dryers. Those convicted of ‘gross littering’ in Louisiana are subject to fines, community service and/or jail time, depending on the number of convictions.
