Between it, this is the wedge of cold air that runs all the way back into northeastern georgia. When the rain is into our area, it will move into temperatures in the upper 20s around greenville, spartanburg, and anderson. That could cause big problems for us or this evening. Chris will talk about that. Chris when did the temperatures warm above freezing . Do they warm above freezing before the heavy stuff moves in . We think it will be half and half. Some of the moisture will arrive over the cold air that will fall as freezing rain. Then, we will warm up. We were looking at the models, and area right in here will warm up above freezing by 10 00. A lot of moisture will move in between now and then. Around 11 00, an area like this northbound warms up above freezing. We will watch this closely. Our eye on the area is through our skycam network. Wonderland. A coat of ice on our skycam. The roof on the golf course, completely covered in ice. Go towards downtown greenville, we have a light mist, drizzle showing up in some locations. In spartanburg, freezing fog, freezing drizzle. The northeast wind keeping the temperature locked in at 28. That is the concern as we move forward. Laurens, the threat is still right on the line. You are at 32 degrees. The biggest concern moving forward here is going to be in this red area, the northernmost part of Greenville County and Spartanburg County. This is where temperatures are going to hold on to freezing the longest when the moisture arrives. John will show you the latest model coming up in a few minutes. Nigel thanks, john and chris. The Winter Weather is canceling flights into and out of gsp. Gabrielle tim waller is live at the airport. He continues Team Coverage. International airport. People are moving along fairly normally year. But we are hearing about some flight delays and cancellations. If you look at the big board of arrivals and departures, you can see a couple. Most of the delays are for obvious cities, chicago, dallas right now showing a couple delays. They are coming in from weather systems at other airports. For the most part, that is from other airports and no delays per se right here at gsp except for canceled flights and delays. We talked to a woman a few minutes ago who is actually stuck here at gsp international airport. She was flying in floriri all the way to ash bank. All the way to asheville. They routed us here because the weather supposedly was bad in asheville. When we got here, anyone who did not have a ride had to get on a bus. Tim so you are stuck . I am stuck until my friend gets here. Tim as far as the airport is concerned, a spokesperson told me a few minutes ago, they are ready for any weather system that happens here tonight. Right now on the runways, they are using antiice agents. They are loloing at the ground temperature instead of what the air temperature is. She says if it gets worse and starts to ice up, they will use a deicing agent. Right now, people are working overtime late into the night to make sure all flights leave and arrive as scheduled. It could be interesting over the next few hours. Nigel now a look at roads in the area. We begin with the interstate in Spartanburg County. Gabrielle Mike Mccormick is live around i26. Mike this is northern Spartanburg County, prone to getting heavier ice and snow. We are close to landrum and the North Carolina line. The interstate appears to be ok, which is why traffic is moving at a speed it would normally know that, which is not a good. The roads have been wet all day. It is very cold. There is a sheet of glazing, a thin sheet of ice on the trees. Take a look at this handrail. You can see the ice buildup that is there. It is a thin sheet of ice. That is the problem. When you look at the handrail by itself, you can tell if there is anything wrong with it. That there is that slippery, glazing ice coat. That is the problem for the roads. Road in North Carolina. We have seen vehicles go off the road after hitting just a little bit of ice. That is the concert. The good news, we have seen many dot crews on i26 in spartan or county pretreating roads. Emergency Officials Say there is less traffic today. With all the state offices being closed already due to the holiday, banks and other businesses already being closed, plus the 7 Public School districts in spartanburg were very proactive and closed last night ahead of the storm, has helped us out tremendously. I know our public works and state d. O. T. Crews have been out all night, and significantly less traffic on the roads than there would normally be has helped them tremendously. Mike Emergency Management officials in Spartanburg County are keeping a close eye on the i26 appears to be ok, but because of the concern, many businesses in the spartanburg area closed early today, as did public libraries, because there is that concern of ice forming. You have to be careful. We will have another live look at 5 30. Mike mccormick, wyff news 4, live in Spartanburg County. Nigel thanks, mike. Staying a step ahead of bad weather. We are along highway 20 276, where there is a chilly mist in the air. Traffic appears to be moving smoothly, but we hear from people about slick spots on highway 25, where it goes over the swamp rabbit trail. Several vehicles leaving the roadway not too long ago. We were out in northern Greenville County. This is a very pretty shot of the cliffs at mountain park. Before we got to that, we saw a number of accidents, or heard about accidents like this one unto 76. Dot workers had already pretreated the roads, but the they had to put sand and salt down because slick spots were reported. The restnorthern greenville campsite lost power for two days the last time a blast of winter came through. The owner says campers who use the site do okay in those situations, because they have backup generators and propane fuel. However, the owner prepares for potential ice storms by having the trees trimmed beforehand. The biggest things are trees. Were covered by trees, so any time theres ice or snow or anything, thats your biggest concern, generally. And were just preparing by just coming to get some groceries, so that we dont have to be ininhe bad weather this evening. Eggs, just like what everybody else gets. And then, maybe something for dinner tonight, too. Maybe some beef stew. Myra this is the fountain at the entrance to the cliffs at mountain park, partially frozen. The pond that the water flows into resembled an ice skating rink. Crews are responding to rex. Firefighters told us about slick conditions. D. O. T. Crews are out and about, monitoring the situation. Myra ruiz, wyff news 4, live in travelers rest. Gabrielle when this weather hits, certain spots can be more troublesome than others in the upstate. Wyff news 4s aly myles shows us where crews want you to be extra careful. Aly chains on trucks, prepped. Other than that, just kind of hoping for the best. Aly now, we wait. If we need to call in extra extra people, and just kind of watching to see what itll do. Aly when bad weather is predicted, scdot crews pretreat the roads, stocking up on salt and brine. Fire crews make sure theyre ready, too. Both know there are certain spots to pay more attention to. With the air getting underneath and over the top of a bridge, it cools down first, and is the first one to freeze. Aly for duncan fire department, a big trouble ot for them, i85 from mile marker 63 to the 101. Thats basically anywhere near the tyger river area. That section of road is always bad for us. Weve had a fire apparatus hit there, probably 4 years ago, 5 years ago. Aly as always, the main tip when dealing with Winter Weather, if you can stay home, do stay home. Try to stay off the roads if it gets bad, if possible. Stay indoors. But if you have to get out, just be safe with it. Aly aly myles, wyff news 4, in Spartanburg County. Both graham and former president bush say jeb has the best executive leadership experience, and that makes him the most qualified to be the republican nominee. The bush values are South Carolina values. The trump values, i dont know who associates themselves with the trump values, disparaging women and insulting a whole group of people. Gabrielle he was a reliable conservative vote on a court that was delicately divided for years, nigel and today, republicans and democrats are fighting over whether president obama has the constitutional right to appoint a nominee of his choosing. Gabrielle brian mooar has the story from washington. Brian even as washington prepares to say farewell to justice Antonin Scalia, its at war over his replacememt, and whether its president obamas choice to make. This country has not gone with a yearlong vacancy on the Supreme Court since the civil war. Brian democrats are outraged by Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnells declaration he wont consider a nomination until the and the battle has spread, from congress to the campaign trail. The senate has a duty to consider that, and to decide whether or not to confirm whoever the president nominates. Im not saying that obama shouldnt do it. Im just saying the republicans should not allow it to happen. Brian republicans are vowing to make this election a referendum on how the next president will fill that open seat. We were reminded saturday evening, by an untimely death, of what the stakes are in this election. We are one justice away from losing our fundamental rights in this country. Brian but not everyones comfortable with this fight. Scalia dies, and one second after hes dead, they already starting fighting about politics.
