President obama says the republicans sweeping electorate victory will not change his priority or his staff. He told the reporters tuesdays vote means, quote, the democracy is working. The gop will control the senate and house for the first time in eight years. The president did say hes optimistic that washington will become more productive. Major garrett is at the white house where president obama held his postelection conference. Major, you got in a nice long one. Good morning. Good morning. Its no secret. President obama and Mitch Mcconnell dont know each other very well and have a long history of talking past instead of to each other. Thats going to have to change if they intend do anything more in the next two years but squabble. President obama has a well deserved reputation for keeping Congressional Republicans at arms length. After another midterm pasting, mr. Obama said that will have to change whether he likes it or not. Im certainly going to be spending a lot more time with them now because thats the only way that were going to be able to get some stuff done, and i take them at their word, that they want to produce. Theyre in the majority. They need to present their agenda. I need to put forward my best ideas. Clashes are inevitable over immigration, health care, and energy policy, though mr. Obama and the Gop Senate LeaderMitch Mcconnell both said they might be able to cut deals on expanding trade in asia and europe and building roads, bridges, and ports at home. Mcconnell found few words to describe mr. Obama, labeling its cordial. O cf1 o theres no not a personality problem here or anything like that. I think my attitude about all this at point is trust, trust but verified. The president rejects the idea that if he simply spent more time informally be republicans, deep partisan decisions would dissolve. Some folks still dont think i spend enough time with congress. Why dont you get a drink with Mitch Mcconnell, they ask. Really . Why dont you get a drink with Mitch Mcconnell. But tuesdays ballot box route forced the pr to belly up to a new political reality. You know, actually i would enjoy having some kentucky bourbon with Mitch Mcconnell. I dont know what his preferred drink is. My interactions with Mitch Mcconnell, he has always been very straightforward with me. To his credit he has never made a promise that he couldnt deliver. The president will meet with mcconnell and other congressional leaders here on friday. The president has one positive memory of mcconnell on capitol hill when he helped dissolve fiscal default in 2013 when he put that deal together with Vice President joe biden. The only problem is that deal came months after gridlock that jeopardized the entire u. S. Economy and nobody here, gayle, is eager to repeat that particular political sequel. Now it agains. Well see. Misch mcconnell and john boehner spell out their priorities this morning in the wall street journal. They criticize legislators for blocking things in the senate. They say, quote, we will make it our job to prove the skeptics wrong. Nancy cordes is on capitol hill with changes coming in the senate. Nancy, good morning to you. Good morning. Mitch mcconnell is not mincing words about the body hes about to head up. He says it doesnt work, doesnt function, they dont do anything, and hes going to make changes right away. The senate in the last two years doesnt do anything. In kentucky the man who will likely lead the senate says he wants to work with president obama abu a fight is already brewing over immigration. Its like waving a red flag in front of a bull to say if you guys dont do what i want, im going to do it on my own. President obama says he will take unilateral action to fix part of the nations broken immigration system unless Congress Acts quickly itself. What we can do is keep on waiting. Theres a cost to waiting. Theres a cost to our economy. It means that resources are misallocated. Mcconnell vowed to move swiftly on other issues and said he plans to send legislation to the president s death that approves the keystone xl pipeline and approve a medical tax that helps to pay for obama care and he made this promise. There will be no government shutdowns. He also vowed to hold hearings on the irs to investigate claims of partisan bias. But even with the his own party, mcconnell will need to vote with members he wants to move further to the right like ted cruz of texas who along with a handful of his gop colleagues is looking to make a splash as the clock counseleds down to 2016. Mcconnell says hes not worried. I have no problem with peoples ambitions. I serve in a body with a bunch of class president s. Theyre all ambitious or they wouldnt be where they are. Mcconnell says he wants to trust but verify. Democrats say they want to trust but verify but theyre going eliminate some of the gridlock around here. They argue that hes been responsible for a lot of that gridlock and in the times he has tried to work with the president , norah, often his conservative members have yanked him back again. All right, nancy. Thank you. A kidnapped philadelphia woman is safe with her family. She was found 100 miles from where she was taken. The Surveillance Video was key to cracking the case. Ill tell you what we saw in the first videotape was troubling in and of itself and thats why we took the action we took. As i said before, we didnt feel that was sufficient. We didnt get that right. They will ask you to repeal the medical device tax as part of faunlding mechanism of the Affordable Care act and they have said they would like to repatriate some maybe 2 million of offshore revenue, reforming the former tax code without touching the original tax word. To use your words, mr. President , are any of those three lines you cannot cross and perceived to be republican attitudes about immigration . I think, major, i answered the question on immigration. I have no doubt that there will be some republicans who are angered or frustrated by any consecutive action that i may take.
