see what it's like as they try to go through some of the tents and we have another reporter on the other side of the park and he had a chance to get a really up close look at when they took down the big tarp from over the statue and brought it into the street and kay street and they started to fold it up and the word is that may end up in the smithsonian. >> exactly. in the beginning, this is a live shot. we thank henderson legal services for the shot there. in the early hours they weren't sure what was going on. we were tweeting of being weary of the police coming and then they showed up in riot gear to protect themselves as well as protesters there were some apprehension about what was going to happen but the captain addressed the occupiers saying what was going to happen and passing out flyers that had been handed out the monday before the beginning of the week and it happened just the way they said with no violence. >> as we saw some of our cameras capture imagines this morning there were close to or estimates of a hundred police officers. imagine if you're sitting in a tent and see a wave of blue helmets coming to you it can be a little intimidating and plastic hand cuffs, ties to hand cuff people. none of that have used. it was a peaceful exchange. in fact, it was sometimes humorous. they got so used to each other's presence they said mic check, mic check and they would say the same thing back to the police. >> we said about a hundred police officers were there and we're not exactly sure of the number of people who are still at the square but it has been between 100 and 2 hundred occupiers there. some people decided to pack up and not worry about any confrontation with police but would come back during the day or stay as long as they could overnight. there's just no sleeping in the park and that has been difficult for the protesters but they are finding a way to exercise their right to a free speech. we're going to toss to the news con treens now. conferencece now. >> he was trying to be interrupted as he gave his remarks. bruce was there and heard what was going on, bruce. >> reporter: hey. you can hear the protesters as well. the protesters getting the chance to say. >> meanwhile, my brothers and my sisters are being evicted from their homes. we are being overwhelmed with predatory student loans. we have corporations profiting off of prison. our park service only cares about camping. i say if you're going to try to stop us camping, we're going to double. you can't stop peaceful people. you can't cause regulation regulations that are basically convictions not an eviction. we have been evicted. the word of getting it out and we're going to be back stronger than ever. thank you. >> reporter: there you heard it. a brief news conference by sergeant and now the protesters themselves taking over the news conference. at one point we want to be standing behind the sergeant. i think that sergeant was a little uncomfortable and now these guys are portraying what they want to portray. >> the occupiers, that was melissa burn leading the occupiers in their chants. they are rallying on behalf of people being evicted and on behalf of students being victims of loans but they are going to double their desire to make a difference. they can't stop peaceful people and again encouraging the people to enforce the banking laws and not worry about people camping out. >> if you're just joining us, we're going to recap it for you. this started before 6 a.m. park police moved in in force and probably close to a hundred officers there. there are pieces of construction equipment and they wanted to remove some things there and they moved in and this is after a week of notice. they wanted to remove only the camping equipment there. they just want to remove camping equipment and that started just before 6:00 this mosh -- morning. >> this is not an eviction. we heard from david they did move protesters. if there is and they're in a specific area where people did collect then they'll be removed and returned to them at a later date. it's with a peaceful assembly on part of the occupiers, a peaceful removal of what needed to be removed by park police and no arrest this morning. >> one reminder too, the metro entrance is closed. however, you can use the metro entrance and exit. also, no circulator buses near 14th and kay right now as they try to keep things safe for everybody. reminder again, mcpherson square is closed but you can use 14th and i. >> we have pio for park service on the phone with us. sergeant, good morning and how did you think things went this morning? we're still waiting for him to get to our phones but we're showing you video of what happened this morning and these are some of the occupiers there. how do you think things went this morning? >> i think things went well. our purpose was to enforce the camping regulation. i want to be clear this is not an eviction. we found that the majority of the folks have been cooperative with us and i think we're going to wrap this up quickly. our number one priority is to make sure everyone's able to exercise their rights. we got a long history in d.c. of long term 24 hour. >> do you think this is connected at all? it seems u.s. park police has been lenient giving them much more notice. you notified them monday and it is now saturday. there is plenty of leniency there. did political pressure play a part? >> i don't think so. as i look at our action plan, it's a program we put together. the booklet is about 100 pages and not something done overnight. it's a long term planning process. i think that it's just our planning that speaks for itself. >> you said you're moving well and going to wrap this up quickly. what does that mean, wrapping up? how do you go forward today in removing bedding and those types of things? what does that mean, wrapping up pretty quickly? >> wrapping up means having our officers in a monitoring program with the park so everybody in there can exercise their rights. we want them to do it in a manner that is safe and healthy and safe for visitors coming through the park. >> sergeant, what about when you leave, how do you make sure that the occupiers do not retake the statue of mcpherson? >> i think one of the things we noticed this morning is a great deal of cooperation from the folks at the statue and i think that type of cooperation is something we truly value and we hope they continue to understand our enforcement on the regulations. >> we have seen evidence throughout this protest to be quiet civil. what was the tone this morning when you heard obviously, it was a little frustrating for you and people were behaving less than civilly. as far as that's concerned, it seems as if the communication between both groups has been quiet civil. >> i'm not going to speak about any other issues around the country, just to the ones here in washington d.c. and i think we've established a good repore with these folks and that's what we have. if these people want to continue what they were doing, as long as they understand our concerns for public safety. >> we observe the tone and you don't want to talk about the tone anywhere else. park police have been through larger protest than this without any major violence and that experience had to have played a role in how peacefully this played out. >> i think our park police, this is something we do on a daily basis. we have several thousands of events every year and i think this is just another step towards that. >> sergeant, we really appreciate your time this morning and it was a pressure to see democracy in action and both sides behaving for lack of a better term and it was an interesting display of democracy. >> thank you. >> before we go, we have been covering this morning since ten minutes till 6:00. some of the camping gear being removed. we want to show you some imagines before we go. we want to start with one of the first things we saw this morning around 6:00 a.m., the u.s. park police removing the american flag. >> down on the flag and then again we'll see another park police officer come pick up the flag and take it away and at that point we'll start seeing occupiers help take down the tarps themselves. here's the police officer removing the flag which had been a symbol outside the statue of general mcpherson. >> and one of the biggest bones of contention was the big blue tarp called the tenth of dreams and the occupy protesters took it down themselves in a very respectful careful manner and they moved it over into the street and started to fold it up. >> we heard the smithsonian could be interested in the tent. there's still some protesters on the base of the statue and the park police had to remove them so we're going to see video where they come in with a ladder and they get off without any protest and there were i think three of them up there at the time and they come down without any incident. this was some evidence with the respect of the police and protesters. this was really impressive because we've seen violence in so many other protest around the country. >> they're about protecting first amendment rights, peaceful protest. that's what they communicated to the occupy remain occupies and that was carried out all along. later, the guy fox mask was on general mcpherson but it had to come down as well and we see the last iconic symbol of what had happened in that little enclosure being removed by the park police but again with no angry protest, violent protest from the occupiers. >> we just heard there are people now sitting at the base of the statue. you can see a police officer there on the left left-hand side. they may sit there and their intention may be to get arrested and they would be the first and only people arrested at this protest because everybody else has cooperated with police. >> they hope to wrap this up shortly. they are conducting nuisance abaitment right now. there are occupiers hugging each other who thought they were being removed but we'll have, of course, more on this on our later newscast. this is live video this morning, almost two and a half hours later and there they are shaking hands with the captain who has been givenning -- giving directions and i wish we knew his name because he really helped keep the lid on things and i saw him earlier talking to some of the occupyiers. the occupiers say they're doing their job but being fair. >> mcpherson square is almost clear of camping gear. we'll continue being played in indianapolis, which is where cynthia bowers is right now. >> reporter: good morning, nancy. you know, hosting this super bowl week is a huge financial undertaking and exactly how much money it generates for the local economy is hard to quantify. economists here say between $150 and $400 million. but so far until today, the weather, 50s and sunny, has played a huge role in boosting those numbers, getting tourists out and about. for people who joke indianapolis is flyover country, there may be something to that. thousands of tourists are opting for an airborne view of the city 80
