The first ten, 15 minutes when its cooling down feels very similar to a frostbitten hand or ice cream head. It kind of feels like both of those maybe times five. Reporter todays study is focused on women with Breast Cancer and whether using cooling caps can prevent hair loss. One study found half the women who got scalp cooling kept at least 50 of their hair compared to no women keeping their hair in the Group Without the cap. The second study found twothirds of the won scalp cooling retained their hair. Chemotherapy works by targeting all rapidly dividing cells in the body, like hair. Richardson had Breast Cancer once before and lost her hair. All the more reason to make this time different. I would go to the grocery store, and people that i knew would kind of run away. Republican leaders on capitol hill are planning hearings into former National Security adviser Michael Flynns contacts with the cekremlin. Democrats want a criminal investigation and they dont want attorney general Jeff Sessions anywhere near it. Major garrett has the story. The president was very concerned that general flynn had misled the Vice President and others. Reporter White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said Michael Flynns forced resignation came down to one word trust. The president evaluated the trust aspect of it. It was matter of trust. He no longer had the trust of his National Security adviser or the erosion of that trust was frankly the issue. Ep unfortunately because of the fast pace of events, i inadvertently briefed the Vice President elect and others with incomplete information regarding my phone calls with the Russian Ambassador. Those events began on Christmas Day when flynn called russias ambassador to the u. S. , sergey kislyak. The call was supposedly an exchange of Christmas Greetings. Three days later flynn called the ambassador a second time. The following day the Obama Administration announced sanctions against russia and expelled 35 diplomats in retaliation for Cyber Attacks on the Democratic National committee. Russian president Vladimir Putin did not retaliate, drawing praise from the president elect on twitter. I always knew he was very smart. Two weeks later Vice President elect mike pence appeared on face the nation and was asked if flynn discussed the sanctions with the Russian Ambassador. Those conversations that happened to occur around the time that the United States took nothing whatsoever to do with those sanctions. Reporter but on january 26th, acting attorney general sally yates informed the white house flynn may have lied to pence and others about his conversations. The president was briefed by white house lawyers that day. Four days later yates would be fired by the president in a dispute over his temporary travel ban. Flynn was then interviewed by white House Counsel and the fbi. The white house insists flynn broke no laws. Last friday flynn admitted he could not recall if sanctions had come up with the Russian Ambassador. The president was asked about that on air force one. I dont know about it. I havent seen it. What report is that . Reporter was he being truthful . No, what he was asked specifically is was he aware of a Washington Post story. He hadnt seen that at the time. Of course he was involved. I just said he was aware of the situation right after the white House Counsel informed him back in january. Reporter did the president instruct him to talk about sanctions . No, absolutely no. Thats never reporter you prefer he not comment . I think the president had no problem with the fact he acted in accord with what his job was supposed to be doing. Reporter in an interview with the daily caller hours before he resigned, flynn said, there were no lines crossed. It wasnt about sanctions. It was about the 35 guys who were thrown out. I was basically, look, i know this happened, well review everything. Sources tell cbs news the Vice President first learned of flynns deception on thursday and from news reports. Scott, officials here insist the Vice President was not purposely kept in the dark for two weeks, but they say the white House Counsels office was instead focused on whether flynn broke laws not communicating to senior officials about inaccurate statements flynn made to them. Nancy cordes now with the reaction on capitol hill. What did the president know, and when did he know it . Led democrats to renew their call for a bipartisan watergatestyle commission. This is deadly, deadly serious. Reporter House Speaker paul ryan did not agree. He said the flynn matter could be folded into ongoing probes of russian hacking. He sent a letter to white house chief of staff Reince Priebus asking for more information about those sensitive National Security conversations that the president appeared to have out in the open at maralago. Overseas, russia has deployed a new Cruise Missile system, and the white house claims it violates an arms control treaty. David martin has more on moscows military moves. Construction crews are working around the clock trying to repair a damaged spillway on americas tallest dam. The trouble is theres rain in the forecast. John blackstone reports. Reporter the huge release of water from the oroville dam has helped make the dam safe enough for the residents to return. But even as the Evacuation Order was lifted, urgent work continued on the damaged spillways, racing as quickly as heavy equipment could race, pouring boulders into gaping holes to prevent a catastrophe. Officials are confidence those aggressive efforts will prevent a failure at the dam, but just 48 hours ago, disaster appeared imminent, with so much water pouring over the emergency spillway, it was eroding the hillside. The first test of these fixes could come as early as tomorrow when the beginning of a series of storms hits this area. Oroville, california. The cbs overnight news will be right back. In a statement, the white house said thats not what happened, insisting that the president was briefed on the north korean situation in a classified setting both before and after the dinner. Apparently there was a photo taken, which everyone jumped to nefarious conclusions about there was a discussion about where to host the event. After the dinner, the president went back into the skiff to get a further update from his team. Reporter but democrats on capitol hill, including chuck schumer, called what they saw in the photographs a security risk. He never should have had such a sensitive discussion in a such a public place. Reporter nancy pelosi posted this message on twitter, theres no excuse for letting an International Crisis play out in front of a bunch of Country Club Members like dinner theater. Reporter good morning and welcome to palmer station, one of the big American Research bases here in antarctica, and that there is our ride. Not your average love boat, theres pretty serious science going on and not all of the answers theyre getting are happy ones. The National Geographic exclearer is a different kind of adventure cruise ship. Shes on a whale hunt. Cutting through the pack ice near the antarctic circle, its not just here for the sightseeing, although theres plenty to see. And while nobody shouts thar she blows when whales are spotted, people do jump in small boats to chase them, just like in the old days. This hunt, though, isnt about killing whales, its about saving them. Its about giving them a health particularly good. One of the reasons we study top predators, killer whales are the top predator in the ocean, is to understand the health of the ecosystem that supports them. Reporter john and holly are modern whale hunters that use the latest tools. They use a drone fitted with equipment to monitor the whales season. A small drone like this, we can fly it just a little over 100 feet, the whales dont know its there, and the quality of the images are so much better. Reporter better pictures but not better whales. The images of this pod of killer whales are not encouraging. Particularly for the adult female, the mother of the family. Shes very, very thin. You can see just following her, you can see her ribs. Shes lost all of the fat along her body. And she has a dependent offspring, so once the female dies, shes going to lose her calf. So its very worrying. Reporter and its not just the size of the whales that theyre looking at, you wouldnt think you could take a health analyzing sample from whales out here in the antarctic ocean, but you can. The team has developed a technique. Here theyre using it in the pacific, to actually breatbreate whales. You can tell by flying throw that cloud of whale breath, you can youre picking up whats inside the whales. Yeah. So these collection plates, were able to catch droplets and we take it pack to the whale and use genetic techniques to identify the microokayisms in that blow. Reporter theyre just building up a database of what coming out of a whales blow hole. But if the whale is well, the theory is you could smell it on their breath. In the meantime, they can only take an educated guess why theyre finding sick whales here. The pack ice around which the whales normally hunt is not as abundant as it used to be. Neither is the food they hunt for. Our hypothesis is that theres a problem with their food supply and fewer seals. Thats what weve been seeing so far. Reporter less ice, fewer seals, is that a leap . Its certainly a hypothesis. Reporter the next time theyre down this way, theyll be looking for this family of whales, hoping theyre still around. Now, because the antarctic is so remote and so difficult to work in for much of the year, Wildlife Research is less developed than it is for example in the Northern Hemisphere in the arctic. Everybody knows about the polar bears. Its time to learn about the killer whales. Reporter in his resignation letter, flynn said, unfortunately because of the fast pace of events, i inadvertently briefed the Vice President elect and others with incomplete information regarding my phone calls with the Russian Ambassador. Those events began on Christmas Day when flynn called russias ambassador to the u. S. , sergey kislyak. The call was supposedly an exchange of Christmas Greetings three days later flynn called the ambassador a second time. The following day the Obama Administration announced sanctions against russia and expelled 35 diplomats in retaliation for Cyber Attacks on the Democratic National committee. Russian president Vladimir Putin did not retaliate, drawing praise from the president elect on twitter. I always knew he was very smart. President elect mike pence appeared on face the nation and was asked if flynn discussed the sanctions with the Russian Ambassador. Those conversations that happened to occur around the time that the United States took action to expel diplomats had nothing whatsoever to do with those sanctions. No, what he asked specifically is was he aware of a Washington Post story. He hadnt seen that at the time. Of course he was involved. I just said he was aware of the situation right after the white House Counsel informed him back in january. Reporter did the president instruct him to talk about sanctions . No, absolutely not. No, no, no. No. It was basically, look, i know this happened, well review everything. Sources tell cbs news the Vice President first learned of flynns deception on thursday and from news reports. Scott, officials here insist the Vice President was not purposely kept in the dark for two weeks, but they say the white House Counsels office was instead focused on whether flynn broke officials about inaccurate statements flynn made to them. Major garrett at the white house. Now jeff pegues has more about the fbis investigation of Michael Flynn. I, donald john trump, do solemnly swear reporter within days of President Trump taking office, fbi agents interviewed Michael Flynn about whether he discussed u. S. Sanctions with Russian Ambassador sergey kislyak. The fbis counterintelligence unit is leading the investigation, which is also looking at whether flynn and at least one other trump associate were in contact with russian operatives during the 2016 election. Mr. Trumps former Campaign Chairman Paul Manafort had business ties with russian contacts. Manafort has denied having any relationship with the russian government. John mclaughlin is former acting cia director. If it turns out that any deals were made, this would be not only unprecedented but would be shocking and would be something that you would have to take active steps to ensure never happens again, and it would leave a permanent stain on this administration. Reporter investigators also continued to vet a 35page dossier compiled by a former british spy who concluded that the russians had compromising information on President Trump. Sources familiar with the investigation say while some of the details may never be confirmed, there is increasing confidence that some aspects of the dossier are true. Flynn could face charges if he lied to the fbi. Scott, the overall investigation is one of the most sensitive and closely held in the history of the fbi. In Northern California tonight, the Evacuation Order has been lifted for nearly 200,000 people who live below the oroville dam. A damaged spillway is no longer in danger of collapse, but more John Blackstone is there. Reporter scott, the huge release of water from the oroville dam has helped make the dam safe enough that residents are being allowed to return. But as the Evacuation Order was lifted, urgent work continued, racing as quickly as heavy equipment could race, pouring boulders into gaping holes to prevent a catastrophe. Officials are confident those aggressive efforts will prevent a failure at the dam. But just 48 hours ago, disaster appeared imminent, with so much water pouring over the emergency spillway, it was eroding the hillside. The first test of these fixes could come as early as tomorrow when the beginning of a series of storms hits this area. John blackstone, cbs news, oroville, california. The cbs overnight news will be right back. Congress is getting in on all of this. In addition to the fbi investigation, the leader of the senate said today its very likely that the senate will look into flynn. The senates already investigating ties between russia and the Trump Campaign, and a House Committee is looking into whether government secrets were put at risk by the president and others last weekend at a restaurant in mr. Trumps florida golf resort. Nancy cordes tells us that congress, however, is far from unanimous on these investigations. What did the president know, and when did he know it . Reporter flynns resignation led democrats to renew their call for a bipartisan watergatestyle commission. This is deadly, deadly serious. Reporter House Speaker paul ryan did not agree. He said the flynn matter could be folded into ongoing probes of russian hacking. The Intelligence Committee has been looking into this thing all along. Reporter but house intelligence chairman devin nunes said he isnt interested in investigating flynn, telling reporters, it just seems like there is a lot of nothing there. And utah republican Jason Chaffetz, whose Committee Examines government wrongdoing says he wont investigate flynn either. When it gets into sources and methods, it really is the purview of the intel committee. Reporter marylands Elijah Cummings is the top democrat on chaffetzs committee. Our Committee Held three or four emergency hearings on Hillary Clinton in the matter of a week or two, and if there is any emergency at this moment in the history of this country, this is the moment. Reporter Senate Republicans showed more interest than their house counterparts, calling on flynn to testify. Intelligence chair richard burr. We intend to cast as wide a net to get answers to all the questions. Mccain warned that flynn is a symptom of a larger problem. I think there is significant dysfunction in the National Security apparatus of the Trump Administration. Reporter this afternoon the oversight chairman Jason Chaffetz says there is one white house move he wants to investigate. He sent a letter to white house chief of staff Reince Priebus asking for more information about those sensitive National Security conversations that the president appeared to have out in the open at maralago. Scott . Nancy cordes on capitol hill. The president has said many times that he would prefer better relations with russia, but now moscow is putting that to the test as david martin reports from the pentagon. Reporter Cruise Missiles are a staple of the Russian Military arsenal, but one particular type, a landbased Cruise Missile with a range greater than 300 miles, is specifically banned by a treaty signed by Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev in the finalrs the cold war. Now u. S. Officials say russia has deployed just such a missile, capable of carrying a nuclear warhead. It happened secretly in december during the Obama Administration, but it is now up to President Trump to respond to a deployment which u. S. Officials say is such a blatant violation that it calls into question the value of future arms control treaties with russia. And just four days ago an incident similar to last years buzzing by russian jets of a u. S. Navy destroyer in the baltic sea happened again, this time in the black sea, first a russian patrol plane made a low pass close to the uss porter. Then two russian jet fighters followed a short time later by a third. U. S. Officials called the flybys unsafe and unprofessional, and one more sign the cold war is back, a russian intelligence ship bristling with antennas to intercept communications is making its way up the east coast of the United States after in President Trump has said he hopes to have better relations with russia, but, scott, that hope is being rapidly overtaken by events. David martin at the pentagon, thanks, david. Kellyanne conway, councilor to the president , should be investigated according to the independent office of government ethics. In a notice to the white house yesterday, the office said that conway, pitching ivanka trumps clothing line during an interview, left strong reason to believe disciplinary action is warranted. Conway has proven to be a fearless fabulist. Yesterday she said the National Security adviser had the full confidence of the president hours before he was fired. She created the bogus Bowling Green massacre and coined the phrase alternative facts. A federal judge in virginia is the latest to block the Trump Administrations travel ban. The judge found that the president s order amounts to discrimination against muslims. Canadians who are muslims say theyre finding evidence of that already at the u. S. Border. Jericka duncan has that story. I thought that i was arrested for something that i didnt do. Reporter canadian citizens fadwa alaoui and her cousin Fadela Boutaleb were recently on a quick shopping trip across the border. This time they were celebrating alaouis fiveyearold sons last chemo treatment, but when they arrived at the u. S. Border in highgate springs, vermont, the women say they were asked repeatedly about their religion. He told me, are you muslim, right . I answered yes. Reporter had you ever been asked before . No, no, no. Never. No. That was the first time that i was asked that unexpected question. Reporter did the agent ask you about your political views . He asked me, what do you think about donald trump . I told him, its not my business. Reporter alaoui says they were told to hand over their cell phones and passwords. She says officers would have seen several inspirational speeches and prayer videos. Fadela boutaleb says she was asked, do moroccans like americans . After nearly five hours of waiting, they were denied entry. The border officer explained why. They found videos and concern against us. Reporter videos that were concerning . Yes. Reporter against the United States . Yeah. Reporter alaoui says shes now too afraid to even visit her parents who live in chicago. Reporter for up to five hours during chemotherapy, this cooling cap pumps a belowfreezing coolant into a helmet surrounding tami richardsons scalp. The chemo shes been undergoing to treat her stage four metastasized Breast Cancer for several weeks. How does it feel on your head . Its cold . Yes. The second study found o scalp cooling retained their hair. Chemotherapy works by targeting all rapidly dividing cells in the body, like hair. The cooling cap works by lowering the temperature of the scalp by a few degrees during chemo and reduces the blood flow to hair follicles, which may prevent or minimize the hair loss. Richardson had Breast Cancer once before and lost her hair. All the more reason to make this time different. I would go to the grocery store, and people that i knew would kind of run away. They didnt know what to say. Reporter so if you have your hair, the reality is people just dont know. Yeah, they dont. Reporter because digni caps has been cleared to use by the fda, it can sometimes be covered by insurance, not so the other forms of cold caps that can cost up to 500 a month during chemo. Adriana diaz is in beijing. Reporter north koreas said the launch was for selfdefense. It comes after months of quiet and at a particularly sensitive time for beijing, just as relations with the Trump Administration were beginning to thaw. So this launch adds a new layer of uncertainty to the thats still trying to get a read on the new, and unpredictable, u. S. President. The missile tested sunday was a new type, using solid fuel, not liquid, to eject from a mobile launcher. Its more stable and allows for less advanced warning. Analysts say its a dangerous step forward in north koreas pursuit of a deliverable nuclear weapon. And its a first test for President Trump. Obviously, north korea is a big, big problem. And today he looks at how Climate Change is affecting the largest predators in the world, the killer whales. And while nobody shouts thar spotted, people do jump into small boats to chase them, just like in the old days. This hunt, though, isnt about killing whales, its about saving them. Its about giving them a health check. And the prognois one of the reasons we study top predators, killer whales are the top predator in the ocean, is to understand the health of the ecosystem that supports them. Reporter john and holly are modern whale hunters that use the latest tools. They use a drone fitted with equipment to monitor the whales condition. With a small drone like this, we can fly it just a little over 100 feet, the whales dont know its there, and the quality of the images are so much better. Eporter better pictures but it turns out not better whales. The images of this pod of killer whales are not encouraging. Particularly for the adult female, the mother of the family. Shes very, very thin. You can see just following her, her whole body you can see her ribs really clearly. Shes lost all of the fat along her body. Shes a dying whale. Here theyre using it in the pacific, to actually breathalyze whales by flying through the cloud of mist they produce when they breathe. You can tell by flying through that cloud of whale breath, the exhilation of a whale, youre picking up whats inside the whales . Yeah. So these collection plates, theyre sterile. Were able to catch droplets and we take it pack to the whale and use genetic techniques to identify the microorganisms in that blow. Reporter its early in the program and john and holly are just building up a database of hole. But if the whale is well, the theory is you could smell it on their breath. In the meantime, they can only take an educated guess why theyre finding sick whales here in these pristine waters, which, like everywhere else, are getting warmer. The pack ice around which the whales normally hunt is not as abundant as it used to be. Neither is the food they hunt for. Our hypothesis is that theres a problem with their food supply and fewer seals. Thats what weve been seeing so far this year.
