Cowan it appears that white house emails are about to get hacked. They were able to gain access to some of president obamas email correspondence, yet another cyberattack that mass many on edge. David pogue of yahoo tech. You can have in huntsville alabama, theyre train can the next generation of cyberwarriors. Here High School Students can take cybersecurity the way other kids might anyway geometry and english. They have no problem being called nerds. I am definitely a nerd. Nerds have jobs. Hes not kidding. These kids already have after school jobs and its not flipping burgers. Some of us work at the local engineering firm. Sometimes they forget were in high school. Theyre calling us at like 1 30 im in the middle of my fifth period. Just listening to these kids talk is easy to forget theyre only in high school. Cyberwarfare is really attractive to other countries, its affordable and allows them to strike at other countries and whatever political interest they dont like with relative impunity and takes damage. Its unique to attack but very difficult to defend. All the experts agree, America Needs lot more kids like the ones in huntsville. Hacker attacks arent just occasional headlines any more they have become routine. Secret service is investigating one of the largest threats of credit card and debit card information ever. Reports say hackers may have stolen up to 8 80 million records. Suppose i pick 100 American Companies at random. How many of the 100 can you get into . Nearly all of them. Its not just me. Frank heidt is the cofounder of leviathan, he employs hackers but theyre the good guys. Companies hire them to help secure their Computer Networks. A few years ago heidt figured out way to break into the computers of a huge oil and gas company, not to do damage, just to show that it could be done. He started with a Google Search where they found press release from bon of the companys subcontractors. They publish add press release they were very proud to supply all this equipment to this very, very large project for this truly amazingly big company. The subcontractor sold networking gear to the oil company. Heidts team found a user manual for that equipment and in that manual they found factory setting for the name and password. Had admin admin most famous password. Youre supposed to change that. If the oil company hasnt changed that password and heidt could have taken control of its phone and data systems. If i wanted to target this enormous gas company. Right there. And how big a team and how long was involved dash da. This is single intern, one engineer and one week of effort. What were seeing increasingly is a range of reaches, credit card theft theft of trade secrets economic espionage. Lisa is president obamas top Homeland Security and Counter Terrorism advisor. She meets with him every morning. Increasingly those meetings are featuring discussions about cyberthreats discussions about reaches to companies about the company, breaches to our own federal networks. She cities that last novembers attack on Sony Pictures was especially troubling. Hackers took control of the computers, deleted millions of files made public Social Security numbers salaries embarrassing emails. The fall out continues just this past week one of those emails revealed something about ben affleck that he didnt want public. He had asked producer of the pbs program finding your roots not to mention that his ancestors was a slave owner. Back in january in his state of the union address, president obama had this call to action. No foreign nation, no hack sheer be able to shut down our networks steal our trade secrets or invade the privacy. Why this month the president signed new executive order it lets treasury secretary freeze the assets of hackers outside the United States to disrupt networks or steal trade secrets. To better coordinate the governments response to attacks, creating a new office in the white house the cyberthreat intel again integration center. It will be one officer one place in the government that synthesizes this information analyzes it, understands who is the range of threats that we face and very importantly have place that can identify that information that can be shared with the private sector. Lisa monaco will oversee the new effort. Im a nontechnical american, all i know is movies where bad guys remotely take control of traffic lights and Nuclear Power plants. Is that realistic this. The danger or the risk of catastrophic cyberattack of the type that you just described is fairly remote. Nevertheless very important to remember that we are increasingly interconnected world. That means were increasingly vulnerable. We have a hospital with hospital records, a bank here which has all my banking records. The white house isnt the only outfit preparing for more attacks. This is cybercity. For the Sans Institute the Training Firm it may look like something out of mr. Rogers neighborhood. One of the militarys premiere cyberwar simulators. Everything under the table is the actual same equipment that is used to control a power grid or Water Reservoir or the other kinds of equipment we have. When people are learning to hack, they are interacting with the actual commercial Computer Systems that control real world power grids dams. Exactly. This facility cyberwarriors practice defending Real World Networks from hiker attacks with remote computer they are to stop the blackout, or even derailing the train. Cybersecurity in medical systems, it is in the military it is in government, it controls our air Traffic Control systems. And if we dont get this right we lose. We lose our places as dominant economy in the world. Retired Brigadier General bernie scotch runs the air force Association National cyberpatriot competition. In this tournament, young teams from all over the country compete to see who can best defend their Computer Networks against attacks from security pros. This is an area of the economy that has negative unemployment. We cant hire enough of these people. It is because cybersecurity transcends everything that we do. Which brings us back to those kids from alabama. A team from huntsville won first place in the cyberdefense national. That is encouraging sign but experts say were going to need a lot more like them. Are we outgunned . Are there enough security people to handle the hackers who are trying to fight them . No. There wont be for quite awhile. According to security experts, preparing for new era of cyberwar is a job that may never end. Will it be an arms race forever . My intuition is to say yes. What is the reality of these headliness it really terrifying or just business . Its terrifyingly normal business but unfortunately this is a problem that takes years to address. And were only now beginning to address it. Cowan just ahead. Were heading to studio 54. Introducing new flonase allergy relief nasal spray. This changes everything. New flonase outperforms a leading allergy pill so you will inhale life. When we breathe in allergens our bodies react by overproducing six key inflammatory substances that cause our symptoms. Most allergy pills only control one substance, flonase controls six. And six is greater than one. So roll down your windows, hug your pet dust off some memories, make new ones. New flonase. Six is greather than one. This changes everything. I love life, but really i love my chicos life. I take good care of myself and i love what i see when i look in the mirror. Ive often been told im the best pair of legs in the room. The so slimming collection only at chicos and chicos. Com. Cowan now a page from our sunday morning almanac, april 26 1977. 38 years ago today, the day nightclub impressorios opened a club called studio 54 in midtown manhattan. Built as a theater in 1927, the building had served for many years as cbss studio 52, a home to several tv shows including captain cang re. Blitzed up and renumbered to match its west 54th street location studio 54 was a long way from anything the captain could have conjured up. It immediately became new yorks top celebrity hot spot, a playground for the likes of liz taylor and Fashion Designer roy halson, mick jagger and Jerry Hall Liza minelli and elton jo mhnmauhamd ali and magic johnson. The discos giddy sex and drugs fueled heyday was depicted in the 1998 film 54 starring mike myers in the role of steve rubell. Welcome to my party. But the party ended in 1980 with the conviction of rubell and coowner shrager on tax evasion charges and the closing of studio 54. After release from prison in 1981 the pair went on to other ventures including eventually the hotel business. And though steve rubell died in 1989 at the age of 45, ian shragev still going strong today as leading operator of boutique hotels. As for studio 54 it returned to its roots back in 198 as a home for new yorks round about theater company. Coming up. A weighty matter. Cowan the common paperweight, rarely gets much attention these days. Theres not as much paper as there used to be. But some feature an inner circle thats a bit of a mystery. One that Martha Teichner is about to solve. Think of them like this. Think of a good paperweight the way youd think of a violinists virtuosa starturn. As the total mastery of technique shown off in a dazzling display. Stop and consider how did those flowers get inside . And what about the bees . New jersey artist Paul Stankard made this one. I invented a personal response to nature in glass. I grew up in massachusetts, east of massachusetts pastures dairy farms, woods and early on when i started making paperweights i started thinking about my childhood memories. Stankards paperweight was created for the Art Institute of chicago. The public is always in this gallery. And they look at these little miniature marvels of technique and theyre just tours de forces. Customer munk house is the chief curator or european Decorative Arts at the Art Institute, home to one of the great collections of paperweights in the world. The nearly 1500 donated by Real Estate Developer and flappist the late therapist the lathe arthur rubloff. Obviously wanted to stop it all with something extraordinary. Four silk worms on a leave. Arthur bought it at auction for 143,000 in 1983. Another collector writer truman capote, he said a paperweight is like a fragment of a dream. She and her husband both ended up being turned into paperweights themselves. And thats right at the beginning of the paperweight craze, it goes hand in hand with the worlds fares and the first great worlds fair was london 1851. Fair goers were captivated by paperweights made in france, small treasures which combined all kinds of ageold glass making techniques. This is called millefiori . Why . It means italian flowers. The Cross Section of the glass you get these little miniature flowers. What happened when letter writing went out of style . Paperweights, even the fabulous ones collected by royalty, did too, for awhile. That is until individual glass makers in their own studios became fascinated with them, beginning in the 1960s and 70s including Paul Stankard. When you got started making paperweights, what kind of status with paperweights have . Kitsch. Kitsch was not what stankard had in mind. No tickytacky knickknacks. No souvenirs. I remember looking at the collection of antique french paperweights and somehow realizing that if im going to be successful in my field i better do better than the best of the antique french, because they didnt have technology on their side. Im going to take the bee and seal them together. What you see them doing is called lamp work. He uses a kind of torch to create the tiny objects that go inside one of his paperweights. They may look real but every detail is glass. People look at my work theyre like my god look at that detail. What flower is that . Possibly an imaginary one. In fact a metaphor. Metaphor. Thank you. Well said. Paul stankard is among the most important makers of paperweights today. Each design is its own mesmerizing universe poetry suspended in crystal the way he sees it. With a price tag as high as 75,000. Stankards story is as amazing as what he makes. I dont want to disrespect the educational system, but i was a functional ill literal. Stankard was dyslexic before dyslexia was identified. His chemist father talked him into studying scientific glass blowing. He earned his living crafting custom glass wear for research and to pick up extra money made trinkets pennies in bottles small glass animals to sell at craft fares. Until he fell in love with the paperweights. The paperweight makers were very secretive. Nothing written about how to make a paperweight. Here is my botanical component. He had to teach himself through trial and error what to do he had to manipulate temperature and timing. How to take a glass heated to a thousand degrees fahrenheit and attach to a pan full of little treasures also heated just enough not to belt them. The furnace for what its word is called the glory hole. Out of it comes a true, make or break moment. A paperweight at last, it goes into an oven to rest. [ applause ] it worked. You get excited like this every single time . Often. Often, yes. Especially now because the days over. And i have something beautiful in the oven. And now you know how the flowers get inside. Cowan still to come. Could be the very place. Cowan going home for the very first time. And later the key ingredients. Cowan mad about helen. Good evening, in South Vietnam today a ghastly chapter was added to the pathos of war that gripped that country the past 30 yearsa huge c5 air force cargo plane carrying 243 South Vietnamese orphans to the United States, first in the government ordered airlift, crashed in a rice pat denear saigon just minutes after take off. Cowan Walter Cronkite reported news on april 4 1975. Less than a month later the capital is he of saigon was captured by communist vietcong. Many more orphans had been flown out of their homeland now Barry Peterson say some of those children, long since grown up, are coming home. They have come to remember that terrible day in that terrible war. Some of those put aboard the plane had been born only weeks ago. Most seem to be between ages of two and eight. There were pieces of wreckage scattered across half mile of rice patty. Shirts books diapers, all too grotesque to describe further. The crash killed 138 people, 78 of them were children. As we read the names of our beloved dead but orphans continue to be evacuated until the frantic end of the vietnam war in all some 3,000 children came to the u. S. Like tobi schneider. Barely six pounds when she came to america. I have real love for life. And i dont know if that has anything to do with it, but i am a survivor. Im a fighter. And Stacey Meredith given up by her mother when she was two. As a child you just dont understand how a parent could ever let you go. Sister mary nelle gage volunteered at the orphanages starting in 1973. I remember seeing one of the little children reaching out from the crib and grabbing a cockroach to play with it. And i was horrified but then you know, pretty soon this is the way it is. These are the cards were dealt. The vietnamese say hundreds of thousands of children were orphaned by the war. Of those who came to america, some had lost their parents. Or they were children who had american fathers that vietnamese families didnt want. But most babies came with no story. We had children who were found in the market. Found on a bus. Just left. Left. And then the Police Brought them to us. It wasnt just a moment in time but we were bound forever. For 20 years now sister mary nelle has been guiding orphans back to vietnam and to the orphanages where they were babies. On this day in loveland, colorado shes at a Bon Voyage Party for tobi now married with three sons. And soon on her way to vietnam. Ive always been curious of my roots, you know, i look around and most of my friends they know where theyre born. Ive just never been able to really know that. So this trip to vietnam will be as close as i can get to that. All she knows is that she was a twopound infant when she arrived at the orphanage. These few pieces of paper contain all the information she has about herbie beginnings. What emotions do you have when you look at this . This is you. Yeah, i mean, i think its amazing and astonishing that any of us survived. I guess quite a few of us passed on. I think its all gone. Stacey meredith also survived. But was haunted by not knowing her birth mother or why she was dropped off at an orphanage as a toddler. Her 19yearold mother gave sparse details, her name, that staceys father was an american soldier. That her family came from the can tho region in vietnams mekong delta. But not why she gave up stacey. Theres a part of it that still hurts. And i miss her terribly. How do you miss someone that you certainly couldnt even remember . I miss the idea of having her in my life. The fact that she kept me nor a couple of years before she gave me up, to me, tells me that she loves me very much and she tried. She did what she could. Its a long trip back to vietnam. Not just the hours on a plane. But the trip back in time. In saigon, now ho chi minh city, sister mary nells takes tob towers her orphanage. It is still operating. Still a place for abandoned babies. Look at you. What do you feel when you see these babies and this is where you came from . Just very amazed and humbled. And i cant believe that this is could be the very room that i was nourished in. Perhaps only a child who never knew her birth parents or even her homeland can understand how important this moment is, finding at least this much of herbie beginnings. I cant put words to it. I cant believe that this is where you came from. My life started here because of people who cared so much. And they had hope for us. But for stacey the journey might be more revealing and come with more answers. A lot of feelings going on. In the city she connects with vietnamese tv netWork Together with a man who has been tracking down the families of orphans and discovers they may have located hers. I fear its not them. Scared of getting my heartbroken. To meet them she and her husband peter traveled a hupped miles to the south. But what might be the best of news is also the worst. If this is the right family maybe her mother died of cancer. Stacey has a great likeness to her mother. Her aunt says, her mother always missed her. That she tried all her life to find her. Please tell them that im sorry that im too late to meet her. I know i didnt look like it but it made me extremely happy. I got a lot of answers at that moment. Like what . That she loved me. That she thought of me. That i wasnt just an accident. I wasnt an inconvenience. But there is still one big if. If this is really her family. I need one of you to fill that out for me. Stacey takes d. N. A. Samples from uncle hai and man who may be her half brother. It takes two weeks to get the answer. The d. N. A. Is a match. Uncle hai and my brother are very, very close matches. I think you have a family in vietnam, stacey. Company. Its a moment shes been dreaming of for 40 years. In vietnam she went to the grave of the woman she now knows is her mother. I just could not emphasize enough to me now tough her life was. And her heartaches for me after i was gone and how she continued to search for me. Can somebody please tell them, thank you for being here, and welcoming me into your family. It took 40 years to complete a journey that started in a war. And led to a new life and ended back where it all began. Where stacey could finally tell her mother what that little girl sent to america always wanted to say. Mom, i love you. Cowan we spend our lives reaching out to the people we love in this life. But could it be that some people can make contact long after theyre gone . Tracy smith. In a way this story is almost like the view of across the golden gate bridge, intriguing beautiful, but sometimes haord t see through all the fog. So are you the kind of person who believes in afterdeath communication . No. Definitely not. Janis Heaphy Durham used to think of death as an ending but she never will again. In 1999 janis and max besler were a California Power couple. She was publisher of the Sacramento Bee a paper that won two Pulitzer Prizes on her watch. He was a political consultant father to her son tanner and the love of her life. We were compassionate and empathetic and my lover and my best friend. And she. At his sides when doctors told him he had terminal canner in late 2003. The most painful was watching him suffer. In may 2004 a few days shy of his 56th birthday max besler died. And that, janis says, is when things started getting weird. Life in her sacramento home would flicker. Clocks would stop at the moment max died. Then janis was stunned by something she saw as she stood in her bathroom washing her hands. I looked up at the mirror and i saw a hand print. A perfectly formed powdery hand print. Large, on the mirror. It was the right hand. Her first thought was that maybe tanner did it as a joke. But his teenage hands were much too small. That hand looked so consistent, so similar to maxs. I did have the wherewithal to photograph it. I wish i had done more. More like . I wish i would have thought to take a sample. I just didnt even think of it. I thought i do need to photograph it however. You knew it was something. I knew it was something. Before long the hard core skeptic was a true believer. I mean i have faith in things that i cant see. But you know there are millions of people are going to say come on. Exactly. I was one of them. I really understand it. In time janis moved on. She remarried in 2008. But things kept happening. A footprint appeared on a chair at their vacation home. Carpets would move themselves across her floor. On the second anniversary of maxs death more powdery images on the mirror on the third another hand print. And theres no doubt in your mind that that was a sign from max . No doubt in my mind. No. Of course there plenty of doubt to go around. Joe is a paranormal investigator. Best way to have the lights out. He showed me his ghost detection technique back in 2011. He read janis story came away with a different view. Well, okay, lets just say that somehow hes doing this. Why wouldnt he do it before her very eyes . Why not just write with his finger im okay love you. Miss you. Is there a possibility that this could be her deceased husband, max talking to janis . I dont think so. He says a lab test of any of the hand prints could have settled the matter. She didnt do that. Then the next year she didnt again. And the next year after that, again she didnt. One has to decide that at some point i dont think she wanted to test it. Because . Well, i think she was afraid of the answer. You know despite everything youre saying people will still believe this. I have good news and bad news. Been news is there are no ghosts. The good news is, nobody will believe me. Janis did some digging of her own, talking to scientists and other experts who she says convinced her it was max. Shes put it all in a new books. If max was behind this, hes moved on. There havent been any new hand prints for awhile. But janis says shes grateful it happened at all. What do you think max was trying to tell you . I think max was trying to tell me that theres more to life than the physical form, the physical reality we live in im not saying that these experiences made me feel less sad about the fact that max lost his life at age 56. It makes me able to live with it better. You still miss him. I do. I do. Yes. Cowan coming up. Working it out. Cowan area to what many folks might expect. Bitter enemies can become best friends. They were the bitterest of enemies. For more than a decade here on the streets of milwaukee two men shared a mutual disgust. One was hard nosed cop named ray robokowski. I wasnt a social worker. I was a police officer. My job was to take care of what needed to be taken care of. What is why you didnt like him . Oh definitely didnt. The other drug dealer and gang banger jailed jacob maclin. You could watch him grow old in his mug shots. It was that career thug and this officer who sat down one day over a cup of coffee. The District Attorneys Office arranged it. The meeting was to see if cop and criminal could Work Together and come up with a way to get out of this vicious cycle. But neither guy was buying it. Ray was only here because his boss made him come. Jacob was tricked into coming told him he had a job interview. Basically just glared at each other. What were you thinking . Youre going to screw up and im going to find you and put you back. He was dead set on putting you back in jail. Yeah. Im glad he changed his mind. You changed his mind. Yeah. Eventually over the next couple of months jacob proved to ray that he wanted to get a job and turn his life around. He sent me on maybe 14 or 15 interviews in two weeks one was Community Warehouse. Community warehouse is nonprofit Home Improvement store that hires ex cons and teaches them job skills. Hes now on the management team. To this day he cant thank ray enough. You grateful . Very. Very. Oh man, very. He said very at least half a dozen times. Very much so. As for that very helpful cop he retired from the police force last year. But you still wanted to work, you want a job. Yeah. Who did you turn to for work . Jacob maclin. And he laughed. Now he held the cards. But i wanted to be here. Through Community Warehouse with his new friend jacob ray has now helped more than a dozen other excons leave their past mind. Is ray a different guy than he was when you first met him . Definitely. Did i say that too loud . Jacob, of course, is equally unrecognizable. Today his only high speed chases are around swing sets. Hes got four kids and has vowed the psych in stops with him. All proof that if you can find the trust sometimes your enemies, can be your best allies. Cowan still to come. I just dont want any trouble. Cowan actress helen hunt. Sustainable tea tree oil and kale. Cowan helen hunt won a lot of fans during the 90s starring with paul rizer in mad about you. In new movie her sparring partner is the Pacific Ocean where we caught up with her on this sunday morning profile. On a golden morning in venice beach, california, the waves were playing host to a traffic jam. Surfers of all ages positioned themselves in the line up behind the break while actress and surfer herself, helen hunt, looked on from the beach. Oh, my, god thats a huge wave. That makes me want to throw up. In case this piece selling me as some kind of jock. That makes me want to throw up i want wet suit that says i just dont want any trouble. The mad about you star got plenty of trouble during the making of her latest movie. I. D. Called ride how much were you surfing . I think its fair to say every time im surfing in the movie its me. When i wipe out in the movie its me. When i wipe out so badly you think she must be dead, thats a brilliant stunt woman who stepped in and helped me out. The story begins in new york city where hunt plays a harried magazine editor. When she learns that her son dropped out of college to surf and find himself the disapproving mom is on the first plane west. Your father just fine with this . You dont want to know. What did he say . Just be happy. Stupidest thing ive ever heard. Your character is cranky . Unread. Uncultured. She softens a bit thanks in part to her surf instructor played by luke wilson. She seems at home this in part she is. Hunt wrote and directed the whole thing. Piece by piece you get to make this little painting. Its a pretty fun job. Especially for a multitasking controlling person like me. Why did you give you up . I didnt. You were taken from me. Its the second movie hunt has written, directed and starred in and neither was easy. I feel like everything i ever did right. Her first then she found with bette midler. My friends call me the rabbi because i just work very slowly and chew on things forever. But its very meaningful to me. Did you get a receipt . No. Why didnt you get a receipt . I dont know. Never occurred to me. Millions of course saw her in her emmy winning run as paul reisers other half on the hit nbc hit som mad about you. On scale of one to ten. A six. A solid six. You see, that i believe. We got so used to her tv life playing out in our living rooms for seven seasons, that when hunt slowed down to have a real life with writer Matthew Carnahan now raise their 11yearold daughter we felt shed gone away altogether. Where has she been all these years . I made a whole person. Thats one thing. Ive made about ten movies they just havent been, you know they have been movies some people have seen not movies everybody has seen and im not on tv every week so thats very different. A conscious choice that family was going to be your priority. It was kind of semi conscious. I made that beautiful selfless decision. I like being home with her. I like working. I just sort of slalomed my way through the two. Helicopter started acting at age nine. Her father, gordon hunt was a respected director in new york city. And she was surrounded by artistic people all her life. Although she was cast in a host of roles at a young age hunt felt she never really broke through. As you moved into your late teens, early 20s were you getting the roles that you wanted . No. This whole thing happened where the Breakfast Club happened and i didnt get it. Then the movie st. Elmos fire i just didnt get any of them. Were up for them . All of them. I was too young for that one. Too old for that one. Too pretty for that one. Not pretty enough for that one. Someone said that maybe i didnt seem virginal enough. They were wrong. This everything, marriage, supposed to be different. She never gave up. People have described you as being somebody who is sort of every person. Is that a good thing that seems boring to me. Thats a nice way of saying boring. Whatever you are resonates with pretty large group of folks. Well, i know when i go to see a movie or read a book i just want to feel not alone. I want to feel like, her, too. He feels that way, too. So when i can work in way that does that for anybody thats a good thing. She found way to show that again in the session. Revealing portrayal of real life sex surrogate for man stricken with polio and her second oscar nomination. Nice shoes. You took the words right in and out of my mouth. These moments that seem to come along that maybe youre not right for maybe not considered for. Or im the fourth choice. Like to will your way into some of these opportunities. I guess so. Not giving up and begging are two key ingredients i found. Im still doing it. Shes already working on her next project. But for now shes traded her surfboard in for a paddle board. How long have you been paddle boarding. Not as dramatic because i like to paddle board pretty much on a lake like this. The last six or seven years. You really love being out on the water. I do. The calmer water she says is bit more time to think. Really soon im going to get back where the waves are. I swear to god. At 51 helen hunt isnt searching for the perfect wave, just the next challenge. Even if its as big as the ocean. If theres any grand design to why im drawn this giant blue thing and why i made a whole movie about it, its because its humbling thats good. Thats a good thing. Cowan next, come and get it.
