Eduardo ramirezs family has owned this park for nearly 30 years, 100 families live here. They own their homes but lease the lots. This is their first entry into a home, the price here is where i own these four walls and roof. Still there is that decision ma about trailer parks and the people who live there. And affordable . And affordable. The future of what the trail kerr become is pretty remarkable. Remarkable enough to attract even the one percent. What is the best part of living here for you . That. And homeowners rent the land, which murray says can cost up to 3,000 a month. People who live here could pretty much afford to live anywhere, so why do they pick a Mobile Home Park in malibu . I think it is because of the sense of community in paradise cove, their kids can be kids and ride around on skateboards bikes, golf carts, just a safe sense in here. So when did you move in here . I moved in here originally when i was 12. Marty king is a contractor, he redesigned his home from the chassis up. Whether they are overlooking the pacific or in the streets of santa fe, the trailer has found a home in the American Dream. The beauty behind the trailer is structurally it is just a simple box. So the mcmansion is part of the mobile home . Absolutely. Osgood ahead there is a feeling that i am an archaeologist uncovering something that is already there. Osgood mystery of the deep. Osgood santa fes georgia okeefe is more than just a repository of over 3,000 works and personal items. It is the most visited art museum in the state of new mexico. Fitting then that almost 30 years since her death the country side where she worked is still known as okeefe country. She painted the mountains around her home so many times she once said she owned them. It seems inspiration can be found all over this landscape and occasionally the native as lee cowan has discovered. In the high desert of northern new mexico, if you listen carefully, you just might hear something more than the wind. It is the underground sound of a man. His name is rob paulette, for the past 25 years with only his dog for company has been scraping and shaping new mexicos sandstone into manmade caves of art. Do you think you are obsessed with caving . Would you call a child being obsessed with play, you wouldnt use that word obsessed, you know when you are doing something you love and are drawn to it, you want to do it all the time. So this is sort of the cave staircase . He calls them his wilderness shrines. Massive in scale poetic in their design. If his work takes your breath away, well, that is just what he hoped it would do. I see this as an environmental project. I am trying to open up peoples feelings. So you call this i call this the tree of human kindness. This small opening pales in comparison to the cavern he dug inside. How how long did this take . Close to 900 hours. 900 hours . Yes. You want to have the sense of sort of being enveloped by a tree. He sees himself as a magician playing with space both big and small, who creates what he calls the cave effect. It has a lot to do with the juxtaposition of opposites the sense of being underground with light streaming in. The intimacy of being in a cave, yet the columns are very large sometimes 30, 40 feet high. He has no degree in sculpting and not a Structural Engineer and he is not an architect. He is simply a man who found his passion. Most of the wonder that i feel is in the actual making, making of the caves. Once they are made you move on. I move on, i want fresh wonder. Reporter he has found that fresh wonder digging about a dozen caves so far. Most commissioned by nearby residents who want a piece of liveable art. Reporter what was here before you started digging. Well there is just hillside. This cave along the Rio Grande River even has power a wood floor and a colorful backup with running water. It at all paulette two years to dig. He charged a mere 12 an hour in labor. You dont do this for money you are not getting rich off of making these beautiful places. No. It is the process, you know, i am having the the time of my life. You can see the way that it is offset here. Amazingly rob paulettes designs have been largely unnoticed until recently, that is. I use only hand tools shovels, scrapers. A documentary film maker heard of the caves and spent three years following paulette as he dug. The result was cave digger, a film so unique, it was nominated for an academy award. I am in the big time now. Suddenly rob paulette was a caveman with a following. So i take it your career in real estate you have never really had to sell caves before. This is definitely a first. Realtor tom abrams is now selling two of paulettes caves along with 200 or so acres around them foreclose a million dollars. But paulette wont see any of that money it all goes to theer. Does it ever get lonely up here doing all of this work . You know, i am never lonely. He agreed to show us his latest project. This is the largest thing i have ever done. He calls it his magnum opus. Taking all of the things i have learned and all of the other caves over the years and finally getting an opportunity to experiment with gilding a lilly. His plan is not only to just carve, but paint these sandstone walls, creating what he hopes will be a healing retreat a Community Gathering place complete with a waterfall. Reporter at 68 he will be well into his seventies before he shares this cave with the world. He hopes those who come here will find in solitude what paulette already has a sense of peace and purpose. There is one simple thing you want people to take away from being in one of your caves what would it be . At least a moment or a length of time in which they have a deeper feeling and deeper understanding of themselves, and life. Osgood coming up, listen to the music. And later enter the dra gone. A stick sticky situation. neo . Osgood something old santa fes historic plaza something new, by new made out of duct tape, dont laugh, we are told all about the wonders of duct tape. It is prom night in pennsylvania and shannon sterling make out. They ended up using 42 rolls of duct tape. I went with a traditional southern bell style gone with the wind theme dress and he has the southern gentleman suit to match. We spent roughly 300 hours total. Pull a roll of duct tape is, i dont know, i just find it very relaxing. Rochelle Fabian Morgan is working on her own duct tape creation, a tribute to actor bruce lee. It started with the vest and all of a sudden i dont know what happened. You cant wear a vest without the dress. Morgan can make just about anything out of duct tape, jewelry. Hats, flowers even paintings. In this video, we are going to paint using duct tape. See for yourself on her youtube channel. And these videos are just the start, even Martha Stewart is in on it. Duct tape art everybody wants one and you can make them. So if it seems like duct tape is on a roll, it is because of what happened here in avon, ohio World Headquarters of duct brand duct tape. So this is where duct tape is made . Well before it gets into the form that most humans would be familiar with, that you see in the stores it comes to us in this particular jar of jumbo. A. This is a 1,200 yard roll of duct tape. Marketing director scottsu mmers. This is cute, flamingos. That is just one of the 250 styles, part of a strategy to move duct tape from Hardware Store to craft aisle. This is all duct tape. Covered in layers of duct tape. As for our prom couples outfit, there is duct behind that. Thousands of High Schoolers ve ha entered the annual scholarship contest, duct prom. But that is a long stretch from where duct tape was first introduced, on the battlefield of world war ii. The division of Johnson Johnson created a waterproof tape for sealing ammunition cases, it was an olive drab olive green color. So at the time, was it called duct tape . Well. Or was it duct tape . It really took on the duct name during the housing boom of the 1950s when it became silver in color to match the ductwork in your house. Today it seems like everyone has a use for duct tape. Even astronauts. I tell you that is going to help some. Yep. They do the trick. When a fender broke on apollo 17s through far rover it was duct tape to the rescue. That tape will keep it so is there anything duct tape cant do . Actually, yes. When it comes to sealing air ducts a 1998 study revealed that under challenging but realistic conditions duct tape fails. Instead take Fabian Morgans lead and unravel a with your creativity. So what is this . This is it looks like a purse, and if you love tom cruise you may wear it. Osgood there is a different kind of music. Next. It is a sunday morning by design. Here again from santa fe is Charles Osgood. Osgood that is the institute for spanish arts flamenco youth company. By joaquin gallegos. Expanding the boundaries of traditional dance here at the theatre of the santa fe opera. Design takes many forms and resonates an unexpected ways. John blackstone has a case in point. Reporter stephen bobber is a design we are a difference. He designs sounds. Coaxing music from some unlikely objects. Are you listening all the time you are walking down the street, sitting down in a restaurant . Constantly. Constantly. It can be distracting. I have to sleep with earplugs in. Reporter barber lets his surroundings serve as his orchestra and inspiration. When i was a little kid hearing the spokes of my bike and imagining oh i wish i could play that like i could play these other instruments. Reporter lately he has been doing just that. This is a composition he calls spokes. Reporter the music is created entirely from the sounds he created on bicycle parts. There is something really exciting and fascinating about discovering new sounds that maybe nobody has ever made on a bike. Nobody was ever obsessive must have to make them on a bike before. Maybe. Reporter barber spent months experimenting and meticulously recording searching for just the right note. How many different sounds did you get from bicycles . I would say it boils down to about a couple hundred. It is almost put together like a collage. The tires right . Now add in what would be aare drum which is the brakes being let go. That is reporter then part 2, composing. And air in the tires. Like that. It is about layering the sounds together to see how they work. The 39yearold reports out of his apartment in emoryville, california, in the world of sound design, he is money professionally as johnny random. And you may well have heard some of the sounds he has designed in the past. Recognize that crunch . It is one of his creations. About three bags of chips went home, put a mike in front of me and just, i should have been eating them up but i ate three bags in chips in a row small bags i took 15 of these sounds and layered them together at different pitches. Now on every super bowl in 2006. The new piece that i am working on is called clarify. Reporter nowadays he is putting the break on commercial endeavors. This is the inside of a coffee grinder. He is cooking up another one of his creations. This is a fish spatula. Reporter his instruments this time come from the kitchen. I didnt want to just do the finger on the wine glass thing. Everybody can do that. I wanted to use a violin bow because i think it sounds better. For barber an appealing sound can turn up anywhere. So all the time you are workingworkin the kitchen it is time to make some lunch you are listening as well . Well, sometimes i tell you i discover it. It is like the other day i was making a caesar salad one of my teaspoons hit the side of a counter and rang out like a bell, it is like oh, you are next. You know. Reporter by simply tuning in barber demonstrates how to find beauty where others just hear noise. Osgood just ahead a library that is he is right in the middle of a leader board at the barclays later today on cbs. Osgood this home designed by an architect mark dubois is a showcase for art inside and out. The design isnt just limited to the structure of a building, it can also be about arrangement the objects it contains. Here is Richard Schlesinger of 48 hours. My eye is drawn to this. I have to say. If you judge your books covers to be just a bit blah, then this man can change everything. Your books are crying out to you from the shelf read me. He is to a library what a taylor is to a suit. He can custom design libraries to make them look like this or this. Or this. I have met painters, i have met people who use all sorts of media, but never books. I think that is one of the things that intrigue me is nobody had done anything with books. From his workshop in boulder colorado thatcher wine custom tailor libraries all over the country. This is a paper book cover it is printed to look like leather. He has always loved box and not just for the words. When you look at a book, how do you i hate to say this but how do you judge it . Dont use that phrase. I probably look at books pretty differently from other people and reporter how . I look at the whole object really. The cover design, the book jacket design, the proportions of the book, you know, i also think in terms of sets and collections and libraries. Reporter are these just to go on a shelf you designed . Yes. If a book looks good off the self he will use it as is. Western americana. He will collect books to fit his clients interests like a curator, and place each book just so. Your kitchen is blue we have a set of jackets that makes them blue. But so many books dont fit as is. This is an he illustration we did. They need alterations to make it into one of these be spoke libraries. These are the American Flag ones. So he will design his own cover and with a fold here and a crease there and with the proper arrangement your library can become a factor wine original, but if you want your books be spoke you better be rich. A Custom Library can cost as much as 750 a foot. But look at what he did at the Shady Oaks Country Club in fort worth, somewhere around 900 books replicating the view out the window. It is a library where reading is discouraged. So there is a time for reading. And somebody check out like the third hole. Exactly. So we actually want to make the books as boring as possible. You are begging the question. What are some of the books that are on that shelf. Those are actually all law books. But thatcher wine does want most of the books, even the be spoke to be read. This is the biographer of thomas jefferson, the point is to enjoy looking at them as much as you enjoy reading them. He wanted to do a purple, black, gray and white room. Jenny fish back is an interior designer who installed a thatcher wine work in a manhattan town house. This is a very cool room, but they are not props so you have a two for one in working with thatcher when you do this. Cool and practical. Exactly. I dont feel like i am the first one to do this. Books have been around for 500 years and the concept of having lie prayers that look good and are decorative has certainly been done before. But i think there are some improvements that can be made. Because some books likejs some people improve with age but others immediate a little touchup or sometimes a major overhaul. I dont know about you but sometimes people just dont get my sense of humor. Osgood coming up. So just to be clear i will add a little smiley face. Osgood mo rocca considers the emoticon. Very funny marvin, i am going to punch you in the face. I dont know about you but sometimes people just dont get my sense of humor so just to be clear i will add a little smiley face. I should probably add another smiley face. It turns out there is a real smiley face behind the smiley face. Take me back to September September 1982. Okay. Well, there was a it was a long time ago. Scott fall man is a professor researching Artificial Intelligence in pittsburgh. 32 years ago the internet was little more than a few University Computers wired together. As bowman as his colleagues wrote to each other something was getting lost. If you made azar cass stick remark that was clueless person out there who would joke. So the professor sent this note. And i said i propose that the following character sequence for joke markers, and then the colon, minus and parentheses and read it sideways. It is probably more things to mark things that are not jokes for a current tread trend. Use this the other way that looks like a frown any face. The smiley and frowny faces paved the way for the big grin, the tongue sticking out and everyones favorite, the wink. And i sometimes know how dr. Prank sign felt. Once you set the monster free you cant control her. He does what what he wants to. Lately emoticons have morphed to include what are called emojis. Actually little pictures you can include in messages. You communicate pretty regularly with each other . Es y. Yes. I convened and emoticonference. So sydney, and natasha burma. They really liked texting. We usually do have a lot of emoticons in them. She keeps in touch with her dad in calcutta. Dad has become a little obsessed with emojis. He discovers one every day and sends it to me in the text and to me it is just like, oh, that is weird. As for the future of emoticons. We dropped in on Matt Weinberg as he worked on a special project. Weinberg is cofounder of the baxter media group in new york city where they do digital marketing. That sometimes includes designing custom emoticons for companies and even for their own employees. Are we headed toward the day when most people will have their own personal emoticon . I think we are getting close right . And that project he was working on, bit by bit it came into focus. And there is something that wow. And that will be a nice emoticon. Oh, i love that. A personal emoticon. That is must have to put a smile on anyones face. Osgood ahead, design on a roll. Osgood the anderson topeka and Santa Fe Railroad helped put this town on the map and transportation keeps changing in many ways. Here is tracy smith to show us one example. Reporter you may not think of nashville as a sidewalk surfing mecca, but some of the best skateboards are made right here in music city. At Salemtown Board Company 28yearold Will Anderson can turn a slab of middle tennessee oak into a world class ride. So this isnt exactly the career he had in mind. My undergrad was philosophy, my masters degree was a masters in divinity and now all my clothes are stained with paint and covered in sawdust so he grew up skateboarding in Central Florida but anderson was drawn to life as a social worker. Now he is building the skateboards everybody wants. Each one is made entirely by hand from the carefully applied stain to the custom paint job to the salem town s branded into the wood. What do you want people to think when they see these boards . I am selling july in every month. I am selling the beach in any state. I am selling summer yearround, and the same joy that i get from making and riding these boards i feel like that is what i am selling. And the skating public is buying it. At around 200 200 apiece, but making a great board isnt even the real reason this place exists. Say legal town is a tiny neighborhood north of downtown nashville with a tough reputation. Up until about probably about a year ago the highest source of income in this zip code was the government. Meaning that people were getting welfare . Uhhuh. Yeah. Anderson and a friend jacob henley started the company two years ago as a way to teach neighborhood kids about discipline and dedication. The tools that were the tools that will help them climb higher later in life. It is easy to give away money or food, you know, it is easy to give away school supplies, it is a lot harder to teach. It is not so much about shaping boards, he says, as shaping lives. I cant think of something that is better to give these young men than an opportunity, not just to work, but an opportunity to learn to work. So he hired Brandon Smith and kendra smith. If i wasnt doing this, really, i dont know what i would be doing. The guys get a paycheck well above minimum wage. Ddh and something maybe even more valuable. That skill that ability to have pride in good work, that is universally applicable. You said you really liked this job and it is not just about the money. Yeah, when you have a job that you really like, it dont seem like a job. It doesnt seem like a job. You are just having fun. Will anderson never thought he could change the world with a skateboard company. He still doesnt. But he thinks brandon and kendrick just might. You only have two employees. Uhhuh. Two young guys. Yes. How much of a difference can you make . If they are able to grow up to be men that will love their families and love their communities and reproduce two of those that is worth it. Osgood still to come, Venus Williams holds court. This is the one i have been wearing at the moment. Osgood with rita braver. But next, home sweet bamboo home. Osgood the klein house is built primarily of concrete and structural glass but the age old Building Materials cant be put to new and creative use seth doane takes us to the other side of the world. On the Tropical Island of bali indonesia, there are homes tucked into the jungle that look like something out of a fairy tale. They are designed to help soaring roof lines, few walls or windows and nearly everything fashioned from bamboo. Why did you want to use exclusively bamboo . Because it is beautiful versatile, it is lightweight. A bamboo tunnel leads to the front door of a laura hardys most recent creation. A four bedroom family home that heads nature in. You are using structural elements that are the same shape they are in the forest, there is something about that makes it feel like it is growing around you. No wallpaper needed. Bamboo is used for the beams the floors, the railings, the furniture. Reporter you are making bamboo do things that we are not used to seeing bamboo do. We justed just took a stand. We are like we are not going to use any fly wood, we are not going to use any sheetrock and not any of the easy stuff we are going to do this out of materials we feel really good about. This 33yearold feels good about bamboo because it is sustainable, she says. It is fully mature in three years and harvested without killing the root. Her mission to build with bamboo started after a 20mine rip to bali, where she spent her childhood. She visited the green school which was dreamed up by her father, jewelry designer john hardy. I have been looking at this for seven years and i am still in awe. He sold his successful business and wanted to encourage the next generation to think about sustainability. Kids most places understand this is a thermostat you turn it to the number you want and it is done, but the cost of that, thez8] cost in terms of over warming and what we are doing to the climate is huge. Green school challenges its 330 international and balanese students to think about their impact on the environment. Do you think that the bamboo, the surroundings affect the way kids learn here . I visited the vatican recently and i wanted to sign up when i came out the door. It is an inspiring magical place, and inspiring magical places inspire magic. The Bamboo School inspired laura hardy to leave her design job at donna karen in new york and team up with the knees craft people originally assembled to build green schools. Today, 130 people work for her. The glass can go on top. Creating homes and furniture for her brand ibuku. This is your office. Just here. How great. Retired real estate ceo peter barges anguage, not far from the school. We wanted a very open bedroom. We didnt want windows. But, you know, it does get hot here so the question is, how do you air condition your bed at might if you havent got any windows . And what is the end . How practical is a space like this . It works really, really well. People think about bugs and things like that but there are a few geckos running around but they share the space pretty reasonably with us and i have no problems with them. You cant really appreciate how big the house is until you see it from down here. Yeah. Back at charma spring her biggest creation to date, the owners gave her free rein. The design was modeled after the shape of a lotus flower, it hasf] a sweeping central staircase and views from six stories. This house is made out of grass that can grow in a few years, you can build something that is just magnificent and exciting and can blow peoples mind yet it is just grass. She wants these homes to be a cathedral to building green and hopes they will inspire by bending and blowing minds with bamboo. Osgood ahead tennis outfits for venus, Venus Williams. Osgood since the 19 twenties, the hotel has offered hospitality here at the end of the santa fe trail. Its balconies are a perfect spot to admire the sites and sights and styles of santa fe, i love everything, the buildings, the clothing, even on the national on the tennis court style makes all the difference. Rita braver now with a sunday profile of Venus Williams. Reporter she has been a force in womens tennis since she played her first pro match at age 14. And she is credited with bringing a new level of power and athleticism to the game. But now Venus Williams is gaining a foothold in a different kind of arena. The world of fashion. That is pretty with the color. Especially lightening up the dark spots. Working in her jupiter florida studio with veteran designer Barbara Clark Louise Williams has created a line of active wear with, no surprise, plenty of tennis outfits. Is this the one you would wear yourself. This is the one i have been wearing at the moment. Do you have any rules for what you think looks good an athletic outfit. My one rule is if i wouldnt wear it i wouldnt expect anyone else to. If i dont like it i cant expect anyone else to like it. She has been known for her sense of style since the day she sported beads in her braids and she managed to earn a College Degree in fashion even as she pursued her tennis career. As the name of her company underscored Venus Williams has never taken a hit or missed approach to anything. The clothing line is called 11. Where did that name come from . 11 stands for being better than a ten, so it just represents bringing your absolute best no matter what the circumstances are. It was a lesson she learned early in life. She grew up in a drug and crime plagued area of compton, california her parents saw tennis as a way out for their children. Growing up with the whole world watching you, was that a certain level of pressure . My parents never told us we had to win they would say if you dont like it come on off the court and you never have to play. But we wanted to play. Of course i think they wanted us to play. You get the gist. There was never pressure. When you were just a child your father predicted that that you and your sister would be number one and number 2 in the world were you aware that he said that and did you think well, okay if he said it we are going to do it . He would always tell us, with positive brainwashing you would he ever meet in your life. Honestly it is the perfect storm because you cant imagine that two sisters could play at such a high level and it would actually happen. Venus and her younger sister serena have both been ranked number one in the world. They often played against each other in tight matches like the 2001 u. S. Open when venus says she never mined if serena beat her. I think at the end of the day i would rather i dont want to lose, i would rather not say that but i will say that i would rather see her go to glory than perhaps another player. Her own career has been one for the books. Seven grand slam single titles, four olympic gold medals, one in singles and three in doubles with heresies, in recent years Venus Williams has been plagued with an autoimmune disease called which among other things can lead to fatigue. Has that affected your play . Yes. Unfortunately, it has affected my whole life. I think it has taken a lot away from me that i would have had but i dont feel bad for that because it is something i have had to go through and i cant change it. Good morning. Or good afternoon. And yet admission to her clothing business, williams also has an interior Design Company. This is the entry right as you come in, and this is the more casual family room, if you will area. She and her team have created sleek and polished looks for hotels condos, even the tavis smiley show set. Her company is called v star interiors, because her full name is venus ebony star williams. You didnt want it to be Venus Williams design. No, not really because i think it is important it stands on its own and even long after a thousand times it will still be a Design Company and not that old tennis player you know what i mean . So that was important to me. Today at age 34, Venus Williams is ranked 20th in the world, and despite her two Design Companies ander physical struggles she says she is still not ready to give up the game she loves so much. Obviously 2016 is on my radar, and evaluate after that, you just call me and pull me aside if i am terrible and say v, it is over. As long as i am good and as long as it is fun and as long as i can then i will. Osgood next, his whole his home is his castle, really. Osgood you could call this contemporary home the castle of jenny and michael klein. For genuine centuries old castle however you best head to italy where allen pizzey is ready to show you around. The family were allied of the citystate of florence, but lived in sight of the arch enemy siena. At the end of the 16th century, the castle was already flattened. It was really destroyed and was one of the last important battles between the cities of florence andna. Each renovationed reflected the age of which it was done. The dark base of the walls dates to the 11th century the layers above it to the 15th. Reinforced with, withstand the cannonballs delivered thanks to the invention of gunpowder. The neogothic reconstruction of the 19th century transformed the castle from a bastion of war into a family home. Instead of a note, there is a gentleman metric garden. Once awe steer rooms became elegant salons repositories for art an fine furniture. Most imposing of all is the dining room, designed with one thing in mind. The place where the family had also to show its wealth, its power and to impress the visitors, and it still works. It impressed me. Maybe not the world but the renovations were the work of bettina known as the iron barohn for his ideals and notorious resolve. And he wanted his castle pit for a king, the bedroom built for a visit in 1863 by King Victor Emanuel the second had a special bed and wood paneling by master artisans from florence. His imagine i didnt stayed three hours neither the bed nor the room has ever been used. Most of the people think that, you know, such a magical place is something that just you enjoy, of course we do, but more the duty than the joy because the cost to maintain is huge. Fortunately the iron barohn found a way to pay for it. A seminal moment in the history of castille low was the invention of property design of a product that not only provides this main source of income but which has become an italian icon kianti. The perfect role of vines that scallop the hills provide enough grapes for the castles winery to produce. 3 million bottles of chianti a year. And when this is your family tree albeit it only up to 1584, the labeled design of one of your best brands be anything else . But wine is really just an added extra.
