Theres no doubt in my mind. They found a very unconventional partner in their fight. Is marks the first personalized fly that youve built . To my knowledge marks fly is the first personalized fly thats ever been built. Ross is not a cancer doctor, he is a fruit fly geneticist. They started doing something that teams like Science Fiction creating genetic copy of a patients tumor in a fruit fly. Apparently a very intricate little critter. Using the flies they then test thousands of drug combinations until they find a cocktail that works. This has been called revolutionary, what is revolutionary about it . Were accessing over how to make the model, as close to mark as we can. And then we dont have any bias we throw. We take large set of approved drugs, throw them all at the fly. We dont care what is driving the tumor we care what stops it. What have we here . Are two flies. On the right normal size nice happy white red eye. Now look at the fly to the left. The tumor eye that has cancer causing genes directed just in the eye. That fly is the mark ply named after mark. This fly has marks tumor. Thats right. Its even more mark because mark has other issues, for example, hes diabetic. You have produced a diabetic flute fly. Its the size of a period at the end of a sentence if that. How is this possible . We have very powerful microscopes. I guess. Mark inspired ross and his team to open up the center for personalized Cancer Therapeutics at mount sinai hospital in new york city. What is it like for you personally to have gone from pretty much strictly lab stuff to dealing with a person like this . Mark really forced me out of my comfort zone. It has changed my career. Changed your life. It has. Along the way patients and scientists also have become fast friends. This is first time that youve seen the actual flies. Patient and fly are still getting awaited. Incredible. His Pioneering Research already has led to three drug cocktail that knocked the cancer out in the mark fly. Next question, will it do the same in mark. We were with him for his first round of treatment. This is his best hope, right . This is his best hope. At the moment this is probably his only hope. Mark has become resistant to all standard care. Im not aware of another option that mark has. A few weeks along the new drug cocktail is showing early signs of promise. And at age 57, 13 yearsfter his diagnosis, mark says he is still got a lot of fight left. You have to feel like what youve done is bound to help other hell. Its bound to. How does that make you feel. What you see, all around you is portugals most visible art form. Look at this his ban tile manufacturer shop. The facade was done in 1865. Was this an advertisement for the tile company . Of course. Impressive. Called the attention of the people at the time. For five generations, his family has owned the company and the building. What is the portuguese name for tile . Azvledoz. Almost there. The word is thought to have come from arabic. Which makes sense because muslims originally from north africa known as the mors occupied portugal and spain and left their culture and art behind. When they were driven out. This is a big hall of the palace. With tiles on the walls, this is the ancient in this casual palace note of lisban. To present and he palace was the summer residence of portugals kings for nearly 800 years. It is a glorious room by room history of portugals love affair with tiles. At first the portuguese bought tiles from spain by the 17th century they were making their own. This is the by the 18th century they had learned from the dutch how to do this. c4u3 portuguese tile makers entered what became known as the cycle of masters. Producing huge, astonishing, blue and white panel, is that told stories and looked like tapestry or paintings. In portugal you can still buy tiles made the old way. Slowly, molded by hand. Painted by artisans who apprenticed for years before being allowed to do this work. In 1755 something happened that changed everything. An earthquake followed by tsunami which destroyed lisban one of the only surviving records of the city before is this blue and white tile panel. 75 feet long. Now the priceless possession of lisbans National Tile museum. The new lisban went up in a hurry, people dressed up with the old style patterned tiles inside and out. By the 1800s, these elaborate facades were fashionable. By then tiles could be mass produced. But all over portugal, you can find charming, eccentric, unique works of ceramic art. Like this house. The name of the house is elements. The curator of ceramics at the National Tile museum took us to the main subway station. Each one of the 11tile panels here is variation on the theme of water. The story trying t protect the portuguese. Think about it, portugals great explorers, magellan, protected by conan the barbarian. The seafaring portuguese have understood and the reward. Which perhaps helps to explain their love of azulejo. It is special because ceramics is art that when you finish. Not until the object is fired. This has the mark of the before they go to the kiln people dont see the print only after. But when they get it right. This is what we call a golden church. The National Tile museum was once a convent. Its chap sell one of the most beautiful in all of portugal. We have a saying, when we want to say that something is perfect we say it is gold over blue. Especially one charismatic almost cult like broker. In the back of the limo with a 2,000 suit and 40,000 gold watch. He shot the movie around for seven years no. Takers. Even director Martin Scorsese was reluctant at first. Leoo stayed on the project. Just keep coming around, tell moore mow he was persistent. I said, all right, ill look at it again. But please, dont let me even read it if theres no possibility of doing it the way it should be made. Why so obsessed . Because the world that we live in seems to be surreal. Incessant need for more is part of our culture. I see it all around me. Id never seen watching him prepare and the chances that he would take with each scene it wasnt just about reading the dialogue it was about creating something out of thin air. Dicaprio made an impression on da near yes, he told Martin Scorsese to keep an eye on the new up and comer. It doesnt call me or tell me about actors that i should work with. Sort of out of the blue. If anyone had any doubt he was different, dicaprio proved it playing gilbert grey his portrayal. First ross that are nomination at 19 then everything changed his boyish fate made him a teen heart throne enin romeo and juliet. Juliet is the sun. Then came this. Titanic made Box Office History and dicaprio a worldwide sensation. m i the king of the world i look back at that time, the movie comes out almost as people start seeing it around the world its incredibly successful. Saying this movie is huge. Great, cool, isnt that what its supposed to be . You dont understand, its making billions of dollars. Thats good, right . Billions of dollars are good, right . I didnt understand. I really didnt. He not only became bankable but the new darling of the paparazzi. Had a lot of fun when you were young. Of course. I did, i had a lot of fun. And criticized for it a lot, too. That comes with the territory, too. And sort of microscope that was put on me certainly after that this movie came out every activity that i did was sort of in the newspaper. Which was silly, i tried to avoid but it was what it was. Still, for an actor who could do anything he wanted chose his roles sparingly. He became a student of film history. He tells me, did you ever see this film . Here is this kid talking about that. You think hes a bit of old soul. Maybe. There seems to be a lot of experience there, youre right. An old soul. Now, at 39, he remains not only one of hollywoods hottest commodities but very eligible bachelor. Hes hardly lacking for someone, usual low a model on his arm. Maybe tcomes a nervous drink of water. Did you see that . I think everybody not everybody, but i think that eventually when the time is right absolutely, yeah. Does married life seems boring to you . Ive seen interesting marriages and not interesting marriages. That is about as far as hell go. His focus is always career. And for Leonardo Dicaprio, so far, its all gone just as he hoped. What has changed about your career, what actor do you want to become i knew at 15 years old, thats the kind of actor i want to be. These are the type of movies i want to do. And thats it. Its an honor to be able to be a working actor, period. Im not going to squander this opportunity. Osgood George Clooney and matt damon in the Monuments Men but a group of world war ii heroes who do it all for art. Film is based on research of man we first told you about in 2008, with rita braver we take another look. It was brazen and outrageous, the nazi push to destroy and loot art ove all europe. That looting spree, tons of work taken from both personal and public collections was perhaps the greatest pillage in history. If you like extraordinary treasure hunts, its got something for everybody. Theres no way you cant be interested in this work. Austerer that i like to think of it as passion, some say obsession but theres so much of the story to be revealed. Obsession came late. A man from dallas, texas, by age 9 was multimillionaire was ready for a change of pace. To sell his business and move. Whats got you interested in this . I was walking across one of the bridges in new york, and it occurred to me also as epiphany how did these great works of art survive and who were the people that saved them. Let me ask you abut this what he learned staggered him. Not jewish, with no relatives caught up in the holocaust he spent millions of dollars of his own money to write a book called rescuing da vinci and coproduce a 2006 documentary titled the rape of europa. Even after more than 60 years, lost art is still being found. For one thing there was systematic way the nazis had gone about stealing art. For example, hitlers second in command made repeated visits to the museum in paris. He can have a glass of champagne, smoke a cigar make the selection of works. Just take them. Load them u on his train, the plane, send back to germany. While the nazis were stealing and sometimes destroying treasures, the u. S. Was making heroic efforts to safeguard art and architecture. Even creating special maps to show the structures they should avoid. Then the war was over there was another extraordinary effort to return the art to the rightful phone owners. Under the command of general dwight eisenhower, a band of many women including some 200 americans, was assigned to the task. Many art historians, they became known as the Monuments Men. Must have been february or march of 1946. Hari, a german born american was one of them. Here hes holding a masterpiece here. Looking at a picture of a self portrait. He still marvels at the undertaking. We americans for first time in history of civilization adapted a policy which said to the victors. A great part of the art treasure stolen by the nays sees. They Found Property stolen from other french jews and they discovered hitlers personal art deep in a salt mine in the austrian alps. For art historians like yourself what was the importance of the group that came to be known as the Monuments Men. Not only did they save this art and rescue it but the records they kept and res take substitutions are used by art historians today. Nancy is head of territorial records at the National Gallery of art in washington. The painting behind you is one that was taken by the nazis from a private family. This painting was confiscated from a private dealer. Then it was taken and kept in his personal collection throughout the war and recovered by the maniments men. Later family sold the piece which is how it ended up here. Theres youve an irony there. You have people who are committing genocide and stealing art . Very ironic. Very people they were taking their art and keeping track of who whom they took the art from. Uncovering the story of how americans helped return some of that art earned robert eds,l the 2007 National Humanities award. I dreamed of a day when these Unsung Heroes would as a Group Finally receive the recognition of the United States. And resolutions were passed in both houses of congress to recognize the work of the Monuments Men. There were overlooked at these Congress People and senators fully embraced the story that i told hem. There are now only six Monuments Men left. Two of them including hari came to washington to reminisce about a time and place they triumphed over evil.
