This is fort worth just a short time ago. Heavy winds blew the roof off this building. We have no word on injuries yet. Jeff ray is a meteorologist at our cbs station ktvt, and hes in fort worth tonight. Jeff. Reporter scott, im on the north side of fort worth, just along 35. Its a busy road. Of course, the interstate, the tornado came in from the southwest, went right over the top of this building, and you can see the video, the large section of the roof came off and went into the employee parking lot. Let me show you where all that metal ended up. You can see its strewn across the parking lot, and a lot of the people who were inside the building at the time are, of course, now trying to get a ride home because their car is literally covered in this metal. Scott, the good news nobody was hurt, but a certain point of i werey here. The storm was being tracked by the national whrf service. There was a Tornado Warning out at the time. The National WeatherService Office about four blocks that way. Scott. Pelley jeff ray, thanks very much. Well, this was also the day that government scientists said 14 of the last extreme weather events were made worse by Climate Change caused by pollution. Examples cited included the 2014 California Wildfires and cyclones in hawaii. By land and by sea, we have two reports. First, John Blackstone. Reporter most years, the dungeness crab harvest in california is bountiful, worth close to 60 million. But this year, there may not be any harvest. High levels of toxic algae in the ocean make the crab too dangerous to eat. The widespread algae bloom is because of niewcialgly high temperatures in the pacific. Sarah cohen is a marine biologist at San Francisco state university. Its unbelievably warm. Weve never had a warming event like this. The extent of it, the different contributing factors, and how this is going to play out this season leads scientists on to have huge concerns. Reporter extreme heat events are one focus of todays report on the impact of Climate Change around the world. The the study found in 2014, extreme heat waves like the one that gripped south korea were made worse by human Climate Change. The report studied 28 extreme weather events around the world last year. 14 of those, including devastating floods in australia and new zealand, were found to be made worse, in part by Climate Change. But the impact of human activity can be complex, the report says. In the United States, record snowfall in the northeast and midwest was not the result of Climate Change, rather just cyclical weather patterns. However, the study says severe wildfires in california are becoming more likely because of global warming. Climate change is causing a lot of unfortunate disastrous impacts around the world. Reporter this is the fourth year scientists have studied whether human activity is at least partly to blame for extreme weather things such as droughts and wildfires. And over those years, scott, more than half of the extreme weather events theyve studied have been linked to humancaused Climate Change. Pelley John Blackstone on a Beautiful Day by the bay. The extreme warming of the pacific that john mentioned is quickly changing the ecology all along the west coast, and heeshz ben tracy. Yeah reporter off the coast of southern california, fishermen are having a field day. Nice yellow finned tuna. Reporter hooking all sorts of tropical fish. Whales are putting on a show in monterey bay. Im totally fighting him. Reporter and farther south, kayakers are finding themselves surrounded by hammerhead sharks, rarely seen off california. Chris lowe is a marine biologist and director of the shark lab at kalashnikov state long beach. He says el nino, warming of the ocean water, is shifting the ecosystems north. When you study marine life, el nino are really cool because they bring a whole new cast of characters to our coastline that we typically dont get to see. Reporter such as millions of tiny red crabs that have covered beaches and a highly venomous yellow bellied sea snake, the furthest north one has ever been found. We measured water temperatures as high as 80 degrees. That is very, very unusual. Many of these individuals may normally typically reside 1,000 miles south from here but now theyre following that warm water looking for food. Whats a great White Reporter including the very top of the food chain. Tourists near alcatraz watched as a great white shark attacked a sea lion. Its believed to be the first great white ever seen catching prey inside San Francisco bay. Sea lions are also starving to death because the small fish they eat have moved to colder waters, another impact of el nino. Now, el nino is also expected to change the weather here in california and bring some muchneeded rain after four years of drought. Scott, those el ninofueled storms typically begin in january. Pelley ben tracy on the coast. Ben, thanks very much. Today, president obama weighed in on the suspicion that a bomb brought down that russian jetliner over the weekend. More than 200 people were killed. David martin has the latest. Reporter in his first Public Comment about the crash, president obama told a radio interviewer it could have been terrorism. Reporter the president stressed there is as yet no firm conclusion a bomb blew up the russian airliner. Other officials said they have no hard evidence, nothing from the flight data recorders and nothing from the wreckage to confirm the bomb theory. It is based on heat flashes detected by a u. S. Satellite at the moment the plane went down. One flash followed by three more as it fell to earth. Images, which are consistent with an explosion, but do not identify the cause. Isis has publicly claimed responsibility for bringing the plane down without offering any proof to back up the claim. U. S. Intelligence has intercepted communications in which members of isis are talking about the crash as if they had something to do with it, but that could just be bogus bragging. The other possibility, a mechanical failure, has not been ruled out. But u. S. Intelligence now agrees with britains Prime Minister who said today a bomb is more likely than not the cause. Scott. Pelley david martin at the pentagon, david, thank you. So what are the likely clues . Kris van cleave spoke with the former head of the National Transportation safety board. Reporter from the air, its clear much of the doomed jet came down on fire. Can explosive residue survive that kind of fire . Absolutely. Theyll get a good reading by swabbing this. This residue will remain, even in a fire, even if its underwater. Reporter we went over video from the crash scene with former National Transportation safety board chair mark rosekind. He says it appears the tail broke off before fire engulfed the airbus jet, landing miles away, largely intact. This kind of debris, what are you looking for . Youd be looking at the edges, particularly, to see how they may have come apart from the main part of the fiewj foous lage. Did this look like there was corrosion . Did it look like there was a fracture . Did it look like there was some kind of structural deformity. Reporter in the days immediately after Malaysia Flight 17 was shot down over ukraine uour Mark Phillips was able to spot clear signs the plane was hit by a missile. Mark rosekind says determining a bomb blast is not as straightforward. It can be distinguished but it takes time and you do this in the laboratory. A cockpit voice recorder will have a special signature, that we will understand the difference between overpressure event, which coul would be a technical failure, and a highenergy explosive event which would be a bomb. Reporter it took the n. T. S. B. More than four years to determine a twa plane crashed because of a fuel tank explosion and not a bomb. What we have here is all of the elements. It is not on the sea floor which made that a very, very difficult and challenging investigation. Reporter investigators will look at the condition of the bodies of those on board to see if they show any signs of a bombing. Scott, investigators will also study the luggage. Video shows much upon of it appears to be intact and not burned. Pelley kris oanother point what, are you hearing about Airport Security here in the United States . Reporter well, sources tell cbs news discussions are under way tonight about how to increase security with an announcement expected tomorrow. Scott, out of an abundance of caution, there will be some procedures to step up security for overseas flights. Pelley kris van cleave in the washington newsroom. Kris, thank you. In chicago today, there was a tragic revelation in the murder of a nineyearold boy. Dean reynolds is on that story. Reporter all week, chicago has been asking why nineyearold tyshawn lee was murdered in this alley, and now the police have supplied a horrifying answer we believe that tyshawn was targeted, lured to this spot, and murdered. Reporter Garry Mccarthy is Chicagos Police superintendent. Probably the most abhorrent, cowardly, unfathomable crime that i have witnessed in 35 years of policing. Reporter tyshawn was on his way to his grandmothers on monday afternoon when he joined others in the alley near her house. Thats when the boy was swept up into a bloody feud here involving two rival factions of the same gang. His execution was the latest in a series of vengeful assaults going back months. Police say tyshawns father, pierre stokes, is an active member of one of those gang factions and they believe thats the reason his son was targeted. Stokes himself agrees his son was intentionally killed. If he wasnt targeted, he wouldnt have got hit so many times in the back of the face. You know what im saying . I think he was targeted. Reporter but he is not helping the cops solve the killing of his own son. Let me put it this way weve tried to interview him at least twice. I cant even tell you what he said because you cant say it on tv but he made it emphatically clear that hes not cooperating with us. Reporter police readily acknowledge that fear of retaliation is keeping some people from coming forward with information, scott, and so far, there have been no arrests. Pelley Dean Reynolds reporting tonight. Dean, thank you. Police tell us that the illinois cop who staged his suicide apparently tried to hire a hit man to kill the village manager because he feared that she would expose him as a thief. Lieutenant Joe Gliniewicz was first hailed as a hero when he was found shot to death in september. Police revealed yesterday he had stolen tens of thousands of dollars from a Youth Program that he oversaw. Today, a jury in pennsylvania found a Police Officer not guilty of murder. She had shot an unarmed man in the back, a killing that was captured on video, which is difficult to watch. Don dahler has that story. Get on the ground reporter a camera mounted on officer Lisa Mearkles stun gun showed her tasing David Kassick four times after he fled from a traffic stop. As kassick lay facedown in the snow, his hands could be seen repeatedly disappearing underneath his body. Mearkle is heard screaming at him 23 times to keep them where she can see them. The 15year police veteran then fired her gun twice. She spoke shortly after her acquittal. I truly wish it didnt happen. And i want them to know that. I never wanted to shoot anybody. Reporter the prosecution called the shooting unjustified. Kassicks nephew, kevin fetters she shot a man that was laying down facing away from her. The video shows that. Shot him. I mean, murdered him, pretty much. Keep your hands where i can see them. Reporter mearkle said she feared kassick was going for a gun. After the shooting, the 37yearold officer administered c. P. R. , but kassick died at the scene. Police found a syringe by his body. Prosecutors said alcohol and drugs were in his system but he was unarmed. Mirkle, who has been on unpaid suspension, said she intends to return to police work. This has taken a toll on me that nobody understands. Reporter mearkle had pulled kassick over for expired inspection and emission stickers, but he refused to stop until he reached his sisters house. Scott, he ran into her backyard, where he ultimately died. Pelley don dahler reporting. Don, thank you. Bush 41 break his silence on men who served his son. Why is mars barren .
