Things got out of hand last night. Were going to make sure it doesnt happen again tonight. Were going to bring order back to the city hoarpt he says there are already at least 2,000 more Police Officers and troops on the streets today than there were just yesterday. And the difference was stark. Instead of sirens and shattering glass, there was singing and dancing. Instead of cowering behind locked doors residents swept debris from the streets and from chrd stores. We got to come together. We got to clean up. We got to put our city back together. Reporter the explosion of violence has put mayor stephanie rawlingsblake on the defensive as critics questioned whether she encouraged the riots with these words saturday night its a very delicate balancing act because while we try to make sure that they were protected from the cars and the other things that were going on, we also gave those who wished to destroy space to do that as well. Reporter but last night the mayor said her critics were twisting her words. I did not say that we were accepting of it. I did not say that we were passive to it. I was just explaining how Property Damage can happen during a peaceful protest. Reporter the mayor has also been charged with responding to the rioting too slowly and with too little force but Governor Hogan said he is not pointing fingers. Look, the mayor the city police, everybody worked as hard as they could. They were simply outmanned. Reporter Police Spokesman eric kolwaczyk said there was good reason their initial response was cautious. When we deployed our officers yesterday, we were deploying for a high school event. I dont think theres anyone in the country that would expect us to deploy automatic weapons and Armored Vehicles to an event with 13, 14 and 15yearolds. Reporter this is the National Guards command center in baltimore scott. And this is the first time theyve been called out to quell unrest in this city since 1968 after the assassination of dr. Six officers have been suspended, and the results of an investigation are due by fridays. The protests in baltimore have been mostly peaceful, and jeff pegues now on the issues behind them. He says the death of freddie gray represents the larger problem between police and the community. How do you feel about the police . I mean, personally, i am going to be honest with you i dont like the police because of what they keep doing to my people, my people, my black people. Reporter people are furious. Yes. Its beginning to become a routine with us, with the police. Reporter 34yearold mike ware says on the street, the routine of rounding up and arresting people is called a walkthrough. A walkthrough . Is that what they call it around here . Yeah. Reporter what does that mean, in and out . If the police dont want us right here on the corner were going to jail and well be home in the morning. Reporter thats a walkthrough . A walkthrough. Rep not along racial lines. They are economic, too. In baltimore there are about 16,000 abandoned buildings mostly in predominantly black neighborhoods. In sandtown, freddie grays neighborhood as of 2011, one out of five adults of unemployed and half the households made under 25,000 a year. According to a balt sun investigation, the city has paid about 100 people more than 5 million to Settle Police brutality cases. How bad are relations between police and this community . In communities where there are no fathers who can provide guidance to young men communities that where theres no investment, and manufacturings been stripped away, and drugs have flooded the community and the drug industry ends up being the primary employer for a whole lot of folks, in those environments, if we think that were just going to send the police to do the dirty work of containing the problems that arise there without, as a nation and as a society, saying what can we do to change those communities to help lift up those communities and give those kids opportunity then were not going to solve this problem. I grabbed calebs hand, and he actually squeezed my hand, and i told him that i loved him and they would take care of our of our baby if he didnt make it. Reporter caleb medley survived but with severe brain damage. Their son, hugo, was born two days after the shootings in the same hospital where caleb was undergoing brain surgery.
