This is the cbs evening news with scott pelley. Pelley good evening, we begin tonight with breaking news from washington. It appears the white Police Officer who shot an unarmed black man to death in ferguson, missouri, will not face federal civil rights charges. Darren wilson had been cleared by a state grand jury in the death of Michael Brown but now cbs news has confirmed the f. B. I. Has completed its investigation. Justice correspondent bob orr has the details. Reporter the f. B. I. Has been investigating officer Darren Wilson to determine if he intentionally violated civil rights laws when he shot and killed 18yearold Michael Brown last august. Brown, who was unarmed was shot multiple times after a confrontation with wilson. The shooting sparked widespread protests and the accusation that the officer had used unjustifiable source. A missouri grand jury though, exonerated wilson and cleared him of any possible state charges. Now the Justice Department is getting ready to close its federal probe. Source say the f. B. I. Has completed interviews with more than 200 people and agents have reviewed numerous surveillance tapes and cell phone video which captured part of the fatal incident. The f. B. I. Report has now been turned over to federal prosecutors. Source say no evidence has surfaced that wilson broke any federal laws. While the Justice Department seems ready at this point to clear wilson, a broader investigation into the practices of the entire Ferguson Police department continues. Prosecutors are still trying to determine if the largely White Ferguson force, scott, has demonstrated a history of discrimination and racial profiling. Pelley bob orr in our washington newsroom. There was a protest today in bridgeton, new jersey, where two Police Officers are under investigation in the shooting death of a man during a traffic stop, but unlike the case in ferguson, the entire incident was recorded on a police dash board camera. Michelle miller has the story. Reporter it was 9 20 p. M. On december 30 when two officers from the bridgeton Police Department pulled over a car with two men inside. The reason im pilgyou over, you went right through this stop sign back there. Reporter officer braheme days approached the car on the passenger side where 36yearold jerame reid was sitting. After days requested a drivers license, the situation quickly escalated. Show me your hands. Show me your bleep hand . Dont bleep move. Dont you bleep move dont you bleep move. Get them out of the car. Hes got a gun in his glove compartment. Reporter the officer appears to reach into the car removing a silver object. You reach for something youll be bleep dead. Hes reaching, hes reaching. Show me your hands. No, you wont. bleep . Reporter reid was shot multiple times and later died. Haria haberfeld is the dean of John Jay College of criminal justice in new york and an expert in use of force by police. The routine traffic stop is the most dangerous encounter that Police Officers have with the public. Reporter when went wrong there. Instead of sitting calmly as the Police Officer is telling him, dont move. Dont do anything, because im going to shoot you, he continues to move. Reporter was this a justified shooting . In my mind, yes. Reporter the bridgeton Police Department says it stands behind the officers. Both are on paid leave, and the county prosecutor is investigating but, scott the dead mans family wants the state attorney general to take over the case. Pelley michelle, thanks very much. The Measles Outbreak that started last month at disneyland is spreading rapidly. At least 66 cases have been confirmed in five states. Most are in california. Among the people who came down with measles are park employees and others who had been vaccinated. Heres ben traci. Reporter disneyland is now offering to test all employees for measles and if needed provide them with the vaccine. It is scary thinking that you know, the happiest place on earth is infected with measles now. Reporter this disme employee asked not to be identified, but said knowing her coworkers had been infected is reason to worry. All these kids that dont get vaccinated upon they could easily come, you know, meet princesses or characters and couple and hug us. Reporter measles is highly contagious. One person with the virus will infect nine out of 10 people around them who have not been vaccined. Measles had largely been eradicateed in the u. S. But it is back in part because a growing number of parents are not vaxing their kids. These vaccines have been used for decades and proved took exceptionally safe. Reporter dr. Deborah lehman is an epidemiologist at cedars sinai in los angeles. Under parents saying i think there is more risk to vaccines than there is to the measles what do you say . Theyre wrong and they are putting their own childrens lives at risk. One in 1000 children who contract measles will die. Reporter most children born after 1971 received a measles, mumps and rubella vaccine. It requires two doses to be 97 effective. Doctors say those born before 1957 likely have been exposed to the virus and are immune. Those born between 1957 and 1971 when vaccines werent as reliable, should check with their doctors to see if they have been properly vaccinated. The centers for Disease Control says this outbreak is a good reminder for everyone to make sure theyve had two doses of the measles vaccine. A simple blood test can check your immunity.
