looking up let's check our next live shot here. never been so excited to see some pavement, where you know, this is the best route. 66 west at route 7, we are actually seeing some pavement. i want to see more of that out there, so we can really our part by staying put, keep the roads clear for the plow operators out there. let's check the realtime maps, we are seeing reports of water main breaks. in rockville, 119 close in both directions and route 28 and blackwell road. watch out for things blocking the roadways so be extra careful out there. back to you. we have talked a lot about potential roof collapses, roofs actually collapsing under the weight of all the snow. we thought it was important to give you safety information about this. henry bachman is on the phone. henry, thanks for joining us this morning. >> sure, no problem at all. >> reporter: let's talk about some safety things. first, do most people need to be concerned about the weight of this snow on the roof? or is it just people who have certain types of roofs? >> it has to do with the pitching of the roof. some of the roofs will hold a lot of the heavier snow drifts. some homes are built to hold more weight than others. >> how do you know if you need to actually get some help to get the snow off your roof? i put the emphasis on that because everybody is saying don't try to go on your roof and get the snow off. >> there is not a cut way i can answer that question. i would not recommend going up on your roof yourself and doing it. get a professional contractor who has experience removing snow and ice from roofs. if you think about it the streets and sidewalks outside are already slick enough. the roof is 20 feet up in the air, frozen. a pitched surface. it is really dangerous. >> some people have tried to use water to get the water to water the snow off the roof. but that is not a good idea either? >> no the water will actually add more weight to the snow. and cause more problems. >> let's talk about signs your roof is in trouble. people said they heard a cracking or pop and they knew something was wrong with the structural integrity of the home. what are things people should listen and look for? >> that is really it. the roof starts sagging. you are not going to see that. the only thing you have to identify that is the crack and go popping. you'll hear groaning. >> so if you hear that in your home, you need to call 911 pretty much and get out of the home. >> i would clear out of the house first and then call 911. i don't know just definitely get out of the house. >> henry bachman. thank you so much for that information. by the way, this is a picture of that church that we told you about over in northeast washington where the roof collapsed, leaving only i think the steepal left there. so it is going to be awhile before those people will be getting back into their church. you can see how it just collapsed and people reported hearing the sounds of cracking and pops, so like henry bachman just said if you hear that, get out of the house first. get out of the structure first. there wasn't even an ice rink inside. if it happens to you, if you hear that sound, get out. and then call emergency providers. this is a shot right here with dulles airport in the background. very beautiful shot, pretty shot. nice and quiet out there. not much taking off or going in. this is another shot a look at the roads, a lot of work ahead for the crews to do in the coming days. we'll be back. you are watching 9 news now storm safety coverage. รบ you are looking at a shot of the roadways in maryland. this is 355, which is definitely passible, but your neighborhood may not have seen a plow yet. and it could be days before crews are able to be in there. we want to get a snapshot of what life is like now in alexandria. good morning, mr. mayor. we understand the city, essentially, is going to shut down tomorrow, with the exception of essential services. tell us more. >> we don't want folks to misinterpret we are talking about businesses. we are talking about city government is closed, except for central services. we want to have the main arteries and roadways passible. citizens need to understand it will be a day or two before we can get to major side streets. with all the equipment we have, it is impossible to get everything cleared in the next 24 hours. ask them to stay off the roads as much as possible. we have seen a reduction in a number of folks who are without power. that is good news. emphasis today is focused on again primary roads, emergency routes for vehicles and getting the areas cleared so utilities can be serviced. we had a lot of trees that we want down throughout the city. we are just asking for patience. schools are going to be cancelled tomorrow. people are going to need to make alternate arrangements. all the other local jurisdictions cope. >> precisely. want to credit folks for their cooperation in this endeavor. regional governments are collaborating. we are communicating with each other throughout the day. so we know where the challenges are and we are working you know in partnership to try to make sure that we address the challenges as quickly as possible. safety is the primary message here. we are asking folks stay at home, only venture out if necessary. >> mayor, yesterday you talked about how you are a lifetime resident, you have never seen anything like this in your life time, and pleaded with people really to be patient with the city and with the surrounding jurisdictions about the clean up as you hear about this other storm that is coming on the tail end, where your folks are just going to be able to catch their breath, what are you doing to get ready for the next one? >> again, the emergency operation center has been open since 7:00 a.m. friday morning. tuesday or wednesday that will not be a major storm. maybe a couple more inches added on top of what we already have. the other message i want to tell folks is that you know, we are asking to get out today is a nice, sunny day. tomorrow will be sunny. clear the sidewalks, clear around the fire hydrants. fire trucks will know where to find them. but people are going to become stir crazy. they have been stuck in their homes for the past several days. i know i'm going it try to get out and walk around. i'm going to drive around the city in an hour but i'm going to walk also. be safe in what you ultimately decide what to do. mayor, wishing you all the best. your city workers all the we have. we know we are all in this together. for sure. thank you so much for your time we are going to take some more shots of what is going on around the area this is a shot of 270 at maryland exit 124. again very passible. but still a lot of snow out on the interstate. and this is an interstate. so imagine what this of the secondary and side roads are looking at. be patient, it is going to take awhile to get all the snow out of the way. but keep it tuned to us. we'll be hear for you throughout the duration of this. your generation had chalk and a blackboard. my generation has video streaming, gigabytes, megahertz. broadband is helping educate the next generation and empowering the ideas that will create the jobs of the future. it's simple: more broadband, more jobs. broadband innovation and investment will help our economy recover, providing hope and opportunity. so as washington works on a national broadband plan, policymakers should build on what's working: broadband for america. you are looking at a shot around the area. this is dulles airport if the background there. we promise it is there but we can't promise that your plane will be there. so if you have any plans to travel by plane today or tomorrow, before you head out, give a call. and this is a look at the roadways. this is 355. when you add 20-plus inches of know to the landscape, it is pretty to look at. but not fun to drive in. >> sunscreen, even, if you are going to be outside. sunglasses a necessity here. it is very, very bright. leslie, i hate to tell you, we could actually get more snow tuesday night into wednesday. and a moderate snow definitely has the potential here to add insult to injury. let's talk about a couple of things first. things you really need to do i know the storm drains, the window wells, furnace exhaust, it is so important to keep those gases from backing up into your house. the mailbox, the hydrants. my pet needs a spot solved, she knows where to do her business, as we call it. -- spot shoveled, she knows where to do her business. >> we are still amazed at the snow we got. >> reporter: never happened before in washington a lot of times you can expect snowstorms to be once every 50 years, this is an average kind of thing. if you take an outlook of how often you get storms like that. maybe on the average one every 50 years. but to get two storms like this in the same season, this might be once every hundred years. every couple hundred years. several generations could go without seeing those. let's go back to the weather computer. we want to talk about how these storms added up here. this is a general snowfall total map of how things came apart. generally other north and west, northwest portions of western maryland and western virginia got upwards of 0 inches of snow. we are third on the all time washington, dc list for snowfall in the season we are at 45. 1 inches for snow the entire season we are going to shoot into two, we could compete for number one. how we rank, we have got a lot more snow than chicago, almost double boston, and dulles, you rank on the par with what some cities they get all the lake-effect snows have gotten this year. howard, we need to talk about this upcoming storm. tell us about it coming up. >> this storm is going to come with energy once again from the southwest. arriving tuesday night into wednesday was we look at the next three days. no problems today or tomorrow except cold. tonight it is going to be real cold. we may even add to it. we likely will add to it tuesday night and wednesday. sunny and cold, breezy atimes around 30. mainly clear, very cold. two to 18. even spots out west, could be down to five below. i think some areas will see the winds go calm. around 35 tomorrow, still mostly sunny, not as cold. this morning we are at 18. 15 winchester, 6 below zero. 8 in fred ricksburg -- in frederick -- very cold. our next storm taking shape. i have some energy coming in from california. the el nino, plus a very strong, yes we do. i know we have been urging people it stay off the roads. but we have also seen people get out and get stranded. if you have to go out, what do you need to have with you and. >> reporter:
