"this broadcast realtime captioned by becky lyon." i'm kristin fisher outside engine company 15 in anacostia where a firefighter has just been released from hospital after he was badly burned while fighting a fire. >> welcome home. >> reporter: dc firefighter chuck ryan has been out of the hospital for less than an hour. but just 5 minutes inside the anacostia fire house and already he says he has noticed a major improvement. >> just to be out of the atmosphere of the hospital and be back outside and be home feels great. >> mayday. >> reporter: ryan, a dc firefighter and chief of a volunteer firefighter in prince george's county was badly burned while the roof collapsed while fighting a fire at this north dc home. four other firefighters were also injured but ryan was by far the worst. he had second and third degree burns over 30% of his body. today his arms, hands, legs and feet are still covered in bandages. >> i will be back 100%. there is no question. i will be back. i'm at the new carollton metro station. people are wondering why it took five days to report a carjacking here. metro's new communication's direct or told me today that his department should in fact have issued a press release last week about the new carollton carjacking. >> it is not that we are not trying to inform the public. >> reporter: last year it took metro police two months before they publicly discussed a rape at the same station where yesterday's carjacking took place. >> it is not my job as the chief of police. we notify media relations. >> reporter: while not accepting full responsibility for the failure to communicate he conceded there is always room for improvement. >> do you think your department needs to do a better job of notifying the public and media of major crimes on your property? >> major crimes we can always do better. i'm peggy fox at federal court in alexandria where kevin ricks, a former teacher and admitted child molester was sentenced to 25 years behind bars. one of his victims who was only 11 years old when he was abused spoke in court today. >> it was hard. my heart started beating real fast. >> reporter: payne said he wanted to confront ricks in court, to speak for all the boys ricks abused all over the world. ricks kept 28 journals detailing the abuse. >> he not only sexually abused the students, the kids that came into his life, but he took videos and photographs of this abuse. >> reporter: federal authorities regret not catching ricks sooner. >> you parents out there, if your kid is going through a rough time like that, sit down and talk to them. tell them if something happened to you, we are here and it is not your fault. they need to understand it is never their fault. never. >> stop a moment and take a look at this picture we are about to show you. have you seen matt hill? police say this 26-year-old was last seen tuesday at the verizon center. friends and family say they haven't heard from him since. that someone has been using his debit car. please call police right away. a local woman who had been a foster mom to medically fragile kids for 20 years. she adopt the five children and with her own biological children she is know a more of nine. a series of tragedies has left her struggling to rebuild her life and home. andrea mccarren has the story. >> i just wish i had a time machine to go back in time so this never happened. >> reporter: karen anderson and her family survived a 2006 fire that destroyed the family's bowie home. two years later her husband and partner in foster parenting died of congestive heart failure. and today five years after the fire, she is still fighting to rebuild her home. >> this is my husband's dream. to have a family home. not a home like this. it is not safe for our children. the air-conditioning doesn't cool off the rooms. the heat doesn't heat the rooms. >> reporter: the family says shoddy and unscrupulous contractors including some recommended by her insurance company have drained her financially and created a hazardous home where a black substance pours through the vents aggravating her children's asthma. >> i'm sorry, if i can't get help what am i supposed to do? >> the water is going behind the gutters. there is mold in the baltroom. the bay window is falling out. she can't even close it. insurance won't fix it because it is bad workmanship. insurance won't pay for it because it is mold. >> ready. let's race. get it. >> she has always made everything better for everybody else. i would love to have somebody bring it better for her. we can't bring dad back or everything we lost from the fire but to not have to fight any more would be great. >> reporter: in bowie, andrea mccarren, 9news now. >> let's hope that happens. despite all of the structural problems and hazards the home passed a prince george's county inspection so karen anderson says she has no recourse against the contractors. great potential for faster train service between dc and boston. congressman saying amtrak isn't part of the public. chairman of the house transportation and infrastructure committee thinks northeast quarter service should be taken away from amtrak and opened up for bidding for private investors saying he plans to introduce legislation that would do just that very soon. this afternoon the house voted to cap the number of parking spaces at mark center to just 1000 instead of more than 3000. that cap would stay in place until there is time to improve traffic flow. around the new building and i- 395 and seminary road in alexandria. today's amendment to the defense department budget also gives the secretary of the defense the option of delaying that move all together. nearly 6400 people are due to start working there in september as part of the base realignment and closure plan. time for a check on the evening rush hour. monika samtani has your time saver traffic. are we saving time? >> some good news now. looks like we are calming down a little bit. storms on their way out parts of the metro area. live doppler 9000. severe thunderstorm warning. still highlighted there in yellow for you and the good news is, quite frankly, we don't have anything highlight in red. so there are no tornado warnings at this hour but there are a lot of severe thunderstorm warnings listed at the -- now it has changed. changed a little bit. only thing that 1 left for us now is frederick county. maryland until 7:45 p.m. all right. looking at washington county until 7:45 p.m. up in here. adams county also and franklin county until 7:45 p.m. berkeley county. and also jefferson county, west virginia. so just this clump of counties right here until 7:45 p.m. i'm going to zoom into this storm because it is a pretty big storm. lots of hail. both waves of storms have had a tremendous amount of hail. almost ping-pong ball sized hail at the top of the show. that's about as big as it gets around here. we do see potential for some hail. zooming in now to the northwest of 67 here and west of myersville and i pretty much guarantee there is some hail right here. this is monroe road. just went away on us. probably monroe had hail for about a minute or two. we had reports of hail in places in west virginia and also washington county, maryland, then up into pennsylvania. they had hail sustained for 3 to 4 minutes which is kind of unusual meaning it is a very, very intense thunderstorm. looking at severe thunderstorm warnings for frederick county, maryland, washington county, adams county, franklin county, pennsylvania, berkeley and jefferson county west of virginia. so we are winding down now a little bit. i'm going to go in and just give you folks a little heads up. i know it is not a tornado warning but it is still a pretty big storm so you might want to just stay away from windows. if you're in woods borough getting hammered with heavy rain. wolfville you're about to get big time rain. these storms are moving off now east-north east at 36 miles per hour and i give you some neighborhoods kind of watch out for. mill point at 7:24 p.m. boons borough at 7:26 and mapleville at 7:28. severe thunderstorm warnings. hail and pretty good rain. our next seven days looking like this. pretty nice. we will have to kind of give up some dry day for some warm air but temperature inspect mid- 80s tomorrow and saturday with a few storms. probably most numerous showers of storms on saturday. then sunday memorial day just isolated storms but near 90. 90 on tuesday. storms on wednesday. relief on thursday. anita, back to you. >> pretty hot. okay, thank you, topper. one more check on prices at the pump for you tonight. this time heading west for those of you driving inland toward i-81. once you hit front royal several stations are selling regular unleaded for 3.65. that is right off i-66. >> we want to hear what you think. sends your e-mails to mcginty's mail bag. the address mail bag at wusa9.com.
