investigators say they are making considerable progress in the search for the culprit of the attempted car bombing in times square. joel brown has the latest from new york. >> reporter: investigators are searching for this man, a surveillance camera caught him taking off a shirt, moments before a car bomb was set to go off in times square. he then started to walk away from the abandoned suv. >> we certainly encourage him to come forward and cooperate with the investigation. >> reporter: police say they have spoke on the the owner of the pathfinder but are not saying if that person is considered a suspect. the license plates on the suv came from another vehicle and apparently were taken from a connecticut auto repair shop. sources tell cbs news, the bomb found inside containing propane tanks, gas and 2:00s had little chance of detonating. while local and federal authorities are brushing off claims that the taliban was behind the bombing attempt, they are not ruling out any suspects including terrorist organizations. >> the people, the person behind that act intended to spread terror. >> reporter: the surveillance cameras are all over times square and investigators pour over the footage in search of more clues. >> go that way! >> reporter: thousands were evacuated saturday night when a street vendor saw the vehicle smoking and alerted police. >> then you heard this pop, pop, pop, which was almost like a firecracker going off and then the sparks inside the car, you could see them. >> reporter: times square is bustling again, but people are nervous. >> i'm a little uneasy, frightening, but what can you do? >> reporter: because the suv didn't explode, there is a wealth of forensic evidence to help to track down whoever is responsible. joel brown, cbs news, times square. we have breaking news in the murder investigation of bret brian betts. a popular high school principal. with warrants in hand, police are sweeping for suspects and so far one person is in custody. kristin fisher is live now from northwest washington. >> reporter: oh, we lost our signal. two search warrants in connection -- big boom. i don't know what that boom was. >> the big boom was a sound of police entering this home in northwest dc. >> 25 cars all over the front and back. all over the place. >> reporter: montgomery county police with the assistance of dc police were serving an arrest warrant for a 46-year- old woman, wanted in connection with the murders of dc school principal brian betts. when suddenly that woman started to walk up the street. >> he was coming up the street. they put handcuffs on her. i think she said she lived there. she talked to them. they put handcuffs on her. they took her back in the house. >> reporter: that woman is in custody and charged with two counts of credit card misuse. police say the allegedly used brian betts credit card the past few days. as police removed evidence from her home, a search warrant was used on 43rd street southeast, less than a half mile away from where his suv was recovered one day after he was murdered. >> they didn't find anything in my house, my son, i'm trying to see why they are here. they didn't take anything. they didn't take weapons our of my house because i didn't have weapons for them to take. >> reporter: we will have more details on the story at 9 news now at 5:00. police are looking for the gunman who shot and killed a 16- year-old boy. the victim has been identified as desmond perkins of northeast washington. according to police, the shooting happened on saturday night near the victim's home on edgewood street northeast. medics rushed per kins to the hospital but unfortunately he died. a long-time neighborhood dispute turned deadly in prince georges county. one man is dead and another man is in police custody. shots rang out yesterday afternoon in the 8800 block of charm court in brandy wine. neighbors say the fighting had been going on for a while. >> this is senseless. this is just very senseless. i mean these two guys have been just back and forth for three years, for years, just, you know -- you know, just verbally. >> reporter: police say the son of the man killed was also shot but he is expected to survive. investigators have not released the names of those involved. well, today, the u.s. military's highest court is hearing an appeal filed by the alleged ring leader of the abu ghraib prison assault. specialist charles graner is serving a ten-year sentence for his role in the detainee assault. his lawyers are expected too argue that they were denied access to classified documents. they claim the documents show some of the detainee treatment was in line with the enhanced interrogation techniques approved by then defense secretary donald rumsfeld. the lone attacker to survive a three-day rampage on a luxury hotel in mumbai was convicted in court this morning. mohammad kassah could get the death penalty when she sentenced tomorrow. more than 160 people were killed this the november, 2008 attacks. actress helen wagner, the woman who played nancy hughs on "as the world turns "died on saturday. she was 91 years old. he cause of death has not been released. wagner was on the show since it began in 1956. she held the guinness world record for playing the same role for the longest time, 54 years. actress helen wagner dead at the age of 91. and we have just learned that actress lynn redgrave died last night in her manhattan apartment. her publicist says she was treated for breast cancer in 2003 but would not say how the 67-year-old actress died. her death is a year after her niece, natasha richardson died in a skiing accident. actress lynn redgrave is dead at the age of 67. coming up on 9 news now at noon, a suspected cop killer has been hospitalized under police watch after a violent drug raid in detroit. and coming up later, violent storms leave death and destruction behind in three states. we will have details in our weather forecast. one officer is killed and four injured after a shooting in detroit this morning. officers shot the suspect and he is in the hospital. police were called to detroit's east side around 4:00 a.m. this morning for a report of shots fired. police say the gunman started shooting when they approached the vacant home and police say they recovered the handgun and one pound of marijuana from inside the house. united and continental airlines have confirmed that they are joining forces to create the world's biggest airline. this is a merger that could have consequences for flyers here and around the country. united is the bigger carrier from bull less airport operating the greatest number of flights. after this deal, analysts say that consumers could see fewer options for flights and higher prices. they will keep the continental colors and logo with the united name. the new company will be based in united's hometown of chicago, but the deal needs approval of antitrust regulator and shareholders. immigration rights activists are calling on president obama for a reform plan. they rallied outside of the white house this weekend. most of the anger was focused on arizona's new crackdown on illegal immigration. opponents fear that it could lead to racial profiling. 35 people were arrested in the white house including montgomery county state delegate. grasp of the damage. tony guida has the latest. >> reporter: the death toll mounted and floodwaters kept rising from tennessee to mississippi. the area took a beating from a line of severe storms and possible tornadoes. police places that already received over 15 inches of rain getting rain. there were though sunday prayers at the light house christian mission. the church was floating down a river normally known as interstate 24. anna 8 months pregnant worried where her newborn would live. >> this destroyed our home, our first home, and we have baby coming in a few weeks. >> reporter: not far away floodwaters swepted away a fire truck. the crew waited an hour to be rescued. >> this right here is where our home did sit. >> reporter: near little rock a tornado flattened it. >> our living room is in our neighbor's house. >> reporter: nearby another tornado blew away leslie's dream home. >> it's gone. it's gone. >> reporter: but the dog survived somehow beneath the wreckage. >> thankful because a dew point upper 60s. that's summer-like around here. southwesterly wind at 13 and the humidity is 74%. we are going to see this area of showers and storms right here continue to slowly work
