and we know there is hail right -- not always is the case but when you have a big storm that actually can produce a tornado it is usually accompanied by large hail and that is the case. i want to kind of do a little trick here on the radar. i'm going to talk about winds. or see what kind of rotation is with this storm. toward the radar sites 5 miles an hour, 25 miles an hour. then we get 25 miles an hour. 50-mile-per-hour wind just a minute ago. what that indicates is there is some rotation here. not a lot but there is some rotation and it is moving off to the north and to the east. it will cross 70 here shortly. please take cover if you're anywhere near that area. we will keep the warnings at the bottom of your screen. we will come back and have our holiday weekend forecast in a bit. lesli? >> all right, topper. perhaps you hear the song "it is summertime" playing in the background. now that it is in the on position the beaches are going into high gear. scott broom is in ocean city where safety is the top priority for the weekend. >> ocean city's beach patrol hits the stands here for the first time this season tomorrow. it is an awesome responsibility when you think about it. they are expecting 4 million visitors over the course of this summer. and nearly all of them at some point are going to want to go in the ocean and get wet. new life guard recruits are being put through their paces as the crowds on ocean city's boardwalk begin to swell for the first big weekend of the summer city. the beach patrols motto. >> keep your feet in the stands. >> what does that mean? >> we are on duty and we do everything we can to encourage people to swim when we are on duty but not before and after. >> considering the chilly water an potential for rip currents and millions who hit the beach the safety record here is remarkable. no deaths in the last three seasons while lifeguards were on duty. unfortunately at least two people drowned while swimming during unguarded hours last year alone. >> you can stick your hand up as soon as you think you might be having any difficulty at all and we will be happy to come out an give you a hand. we would rather have a a thousand or million unnecessary rescues than a single rescue that was necessary and didn't happen. >> reporter: covering 10 miles of beach front from 89 stands beginning at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning. despite all the hot weather the water temperature right now is very chilly. 63 degrees. and they are warning that that can take the energy out of a swimmer pretty quickly. another thing to watch out for especially with little kids. here in ocean city, scott broom, 9news now. >> over the next four days a quarter of a million people are expected to crowd ocean city and the hotels and condos in the resort town are reporting bookings up 5% for the upcoming season. we know the mass exodus is underway. monika samtani will save you some time tonight. >> i will try, lesli. heavy traffic started at about noon today on our beltway. also have got a lot of heavy traffic if you're planning to head over to 95 on the northbound sound. all because of an accident right up here near newington. delays beginning as you come up from triangle. then it is okay as you can see the green cars right here. by the way vdot suspended all road construction between noon today and noon on tuesday. let's take you out around town. here is what it looks like. coming out from the bay bridge on route 50, everything is looking fine. we will quickly look at the new jersey turnpike. no problem if you're heading into new york using 95 and njcp. back to you. >> all right, thank you. people are getting relief heading to the pumps this memorial day weekend and according to aaa the national average for regular unleaded gasoline is $3.81. that's down 8 cents from last week but still more than a dollar than what we were paying this time last year. here in our area the average is $3.88. and a big heads up for metro riders this weekend. from 10 p.m. tonight until 2 a.m. in the morning there will be no service between minnesota avenue and federal center southwest. on the blue line trains won't be running between bedding road and federal center southwest. and then the trains are going to be single tracking on the redline. as well as between takoma. there has been one boating death in our area this season and the u.s. coastguard wants to make sure that that is the only one so agents are going to be out on the waters this weekend. some might even come aboard your boat to perform a safety check. and lindsey mastis shows us what no boaters should be without. >> reporter: these guys could be boarding your boat this weekend. >> coming up. >> reporter: they are with the u.s. coastguard. they let me come along while they monitored the potomac. they go out every day but saying this memorial day weekend they will be extremely busy making sure everyone is obeying the law. that goes for kids. >> under 13 you need to be wearing a life jacket. >> reporter: and adults. >> you're required to wear it on jet skir. >> reporter: every boat is required to have a throwable life safety. >> it is not worth drinking and driving on this river. >> reporter: brian evans says they will issue a fine and take you out of the water. >> if it is an issue where they can't drive the boat. we will tow them. otherwise we will follow them home and make sure they moor their boat up. >> reporter: one thing that is not required. >> having a radio aboard. anytime there is an emergency it is way better of a means than a cell phone. >> reporter: he says there is a host of requirements depending on what kind of boat you have. but every boat needs a whistle or a horn. >> reporter: the u.s. coastguard is willing to check your boat before you go out. i'm lindsey mastis. on the potomac. 9news now. >> the rules are different on the bay versus the potomac. in the bay you are required to carry flares and in some jurisdictions you have to take a safety course. for everything summer and for what to do over the long holiday weekend to the best places to find the cheapest gas before you hit the road, log onto our website wusa9.com. >> on to other news. a desperate search tonight for a 26-year-old dc man who simply vanished on tuesday. we are following the story. we are joined live now from the verizon center where we understand this is the last place this young man was seen? >> reporter: that's right, anita. matt hill was last seen here right around 10:30 p.m. tuesday morning dropping off a college student who he was mentoring. 90 minutes later his credit card was used at a gas station in arlington, virginia. though it is not clear at this point who used it. hill's father said matt is a wonderful son and responsible person who has never and would never simply disappear without telling anyone. for their part dc police say right now the case is being treated as a missing person's case. at this point according to police there are no signs of foul play. the hill family believes that foul play is the only explanation. >> i feel in my heart there is foul play. there are just pieces of the puzzle that don't make sense. the lamp reveals what the darkness conceals and i just have to hold true to my faith. >> reporter: dc police are looking not only for matt hill but for his 1996 black honda civic with maryland license plat number on the screen. if you have any information call dc police at the following number 202-727-9099. >> let's hope for some leads. matt, thank you. there is a possible break in the murder case of respected american university professor sue ann markham. police identified a man as a suspect and issued an arrest warrant. markham was found dead in her bethesda home last october. police say they believe the professor was teaching markham spanish. he fled to mexico where he has proclaimed his innocence in this case. still to come on this get away friday. would you eat raw onions for a snack? some dc school kids were faced with that. why they were given green onions at lunchtime. more details in the casey anthony murder trial. what someone smelled in the vehicle. >> are you talking about a deceased human being? >> yes, ma'am. potentially damagingtime for casey anthony and her legal team. it happened today. a tow worker said he smelled what he thought was a rotting corpse in anthony's car. the jury watched surveillance video of anthony casually shopping in the days after her child disappeared. if convicted casey anthony could face death. president obama is now in poland tonight after meeting with other g8 leaders in france. the delegates from some of the world's richest countries are promising $20 billion to egypt and tunisia going to the transition of these nations into democracy democracy. secretary of state hillary clinton is trying to repair america's relations with pakistan following the covert raid that killed osama bin laden. today clinton met with officials in islamabad where she told them the country needs to take decisive steps to fight terror. pakistani leaders are angry because the u.s. didn't tell them ahead of time about the may 2nd raid on bin laden's complex. right after the break, snack attacks. a local school is trying to make snack time healthy again but some parents say they took it a step in the wrong direction. that's crazy. this past tuesday instead of zuccinis kids were served scallions as a snack. >> would you eat a raw onion? >> no one thought to say wait a minute. this can't be right. >> reporter: the principal did catch the micup but not before two teachers brought the onion to class. >> it is an edible object. i don't think they intentionally fed the onions as a snack. i hope not. >> are you embarrassed at all? >> am i? >> mistakes happens. >> reporter: the director of food nutrition says when you serve 72,000 meals a day mistakes will happen. but how? >> what happened is the kitchen person in the school basically checked the wrong box and scallions came in. >> reporter: they take part in the fresh fruit and vegetable program where local farms provide some of the snacks of the day which are brand-new to some kids and apparently to the kitchen staff. mill says a less ingredient like scallions is now in order. >> reporter: the kids did have a snack. an apple. in fact, it could have been one of these green apples and don't worry these green onions did not go to waste. a lot of these kids brought them home for their parents to cook dinner with later on that night. a more ideal use for them. delia gonclaves, 9news now. >> now, the school lunch supplier did not return our request for information today but delia gonclaves tells us the school did send letters home to parents and they plan to make it up to the kids by throwing them a barbecue. well, the summer season is off and running. the holiday weekend is here. but it is not all good news. topper, you're tracking some severe weather. >> in fact, the severe weather now in pennsylvania, lesli, has been extend. extending the tornado warnings now until 7 p.m. look at live doppler 9000. this storm has been pretty hefty all night. no doubt about that. and also want to point out. mentioned this earlier. a lot of storms back to the south and west of us that are going to impact our western suburbs in a big way in the next 1 to 2 hours. so there are no warnings yet on those storms down south of warrenton and this big storm just south of fredericksburg, but that said there are some big storms on the way tonight. all right, let's go back up to pennsylvania. folks getting hit again just as you got hit the same spot exactly the same spot yesterday. now look at this. this is breezewood right here. and look at all this hail just around this area. this is moving directly towards breezewood. no doubt about it. yesterday we were talking about 220 just south of bedford. now we are talking about breezywood. hagerstown. we are just across the border a little bit over to the north and to the west. there was a storm earlier in breezywood just about -- i don't know, about 20 minutes ago. and howard took this picture. this is a pretty good picture. it looks like a little bit of rotation. he couldn't tell this rotation with the storm but that is off 70. up in the breezewood area. pretty impressive storm. the whole metro area to the south under a severe thunderstorm watch. and you see some of the warnings up there in red. those are the tornado warnings. watch goes all the way to the bay and all the way to the mountains until 8 p.m. tonight. so we are not out of the woods in terms of severe weather in the metro area. all right. we will go back to doppler here. this is quite a storm. we will back up just a little bit here. and again, breezewood take cover. you're under a tornado warning. i would take cover if you were in the path of this storm. and there is also some pretty big storms still just kind of trailing south of cumberland. these will put down rainfall rates 1 to 2 inches per hour and perhaps some hail. no doubt there is hail in this storm. i mean, no doubt at all. in fact, we will kind of pinpoint exactly where the hail is. and it looks like -- state highway 26. again, we are just now to the east. you're watching hd that's it right there. this storm is moving off to the north and the east at about 30 miles per hour. take cover. go to an interior room or basement. breezewood. hopefully you've done as the storm moves through bedford and fulton county, pennsylvania. our next seven days. looks like this. not a bad weekend really. tomorrow will be the wettest day. low 80s. then just a few storms on sunday. and just maybe one or two storms on monday. 92 for memorial day. mid-90s next week. cold front comes through on wednesday. and little bit cooler on thursday and friday. so that's the latest, lesli. severe thunderstorm watch covering the entire metro area until 8 p.m. everything right now is to your west. thankfully. back to you. >> all right. i appreciate that, topper, thank you very much. dave owens is doing some sports tonight. what's going on?
