from the first local station with news in high definition, this is 9news now. >> good evening everyone. bruce johnson is off tonight. thanks for joining us. the third round of the at&t national is wrapping up with tiger woods sharing the top of the leader board. there is a developing story in the national football league. right now, let's go to sara walsh at the congressional. >> thanks. despite a picturesque day, we begin with tragic news in the sports world. long time tennessee titan has been shot and killed. police were called and found mcnair with a fatal gun shot wound to the head. no arrests have been played. he played 13nfl seasons, 11 with tennessee, his final two with baltimore before he retired in 2008. he was the league comvp in 2003. >> when police officers arrived in response to that call, they found two individuals who had been shot to death inside the residence. one female, one male. we now know that the male deceased is steve mcnair. we don't know the circumstances of these shooting deaths. there's a will the of work yet to be done. it's going to take many hours. i don't have any answers for you now as to what happened, who is responsible, for what circumstances are. >> we will continue to pass along the latest on wusa9.com as we learn of it. there's no easy transition to what went on here at congressional country club. tiger woods began the day with a one stroke lead and he thought that title was going to be his. his colleagues had other ideas. round three of the at&t national. on hole nine, tiger in with a one shot lead. the long eagle attempt there. he drains it. it was the first eagle of the tournament. right here he would give it all back. that would open the door to anthony kim. that is where he would finish as a coleader with tiger woods at 10 under. they will be paired tomorrow, 10 under, and then a grown up of guys at 9 under. michael allen who shot a 65 today, cameron, and jim at 8 under along with rod and glover is 7 under for the tournament. brett haber is with tiger woods right now as we speak. we'll pass along that interview as we learn details on the tragic story of steve mcnair shot and killed at age 36. for now, we are live at congressional country club. back to you in the studio. >> we will check back with you later in the show. thank you so much. >> it seemed like a picture perfect day, hoping it will stay that way for the fireworks tonight. let's go outside to tony pan. >> i think it's going to be okay for the fireworks display tonight. a lot of people heading downtown. the clouds are thickening up and i do expect rain to move in after midnight. for the most part, we are going to be fine. take a look at the forecast in detail. i'm shooting for 10:00, that's when most of the fireworks displays take off. mostly cloudy skies. it will be dry, i believe in most areas. temperatures in the 70s. the humidity is certainly in comfortable range. we have rain in the forecast. tomorrow, we'll talk about that and check the seven-day when we come back in a few minutes. for now, we'll send it back inside to the studio. a huge crowd is headed to the national mall. the big fireworks display is set for dusk. lindsey is on the mall now. it might be tricky getting downtown in the first place, isn't it lindsey? 'l tl havehat story coming up. welcome back. baltimore police have arrested a teenager in the shooting of a five-year-old girl. 17-year-old lamont davis was arrested earlier today. police say he faces numerous charges, including attempted murder and assault. davis used a semi-automatic handgun to shoot at another teen. the bullet missed the teen and struck the five-year-old girl in the head. tonight the child remains hospitalized in critical condition. a reminder of the danger of fireworks this holiday weekend. authorities in hancock, maryland say a car loaded with fireworks caught fire this morning. it happened on the eastbound lane of interstate 70. fire officials say the man bought the explosives from a roadside stand. preparations are well underway this fourth of july. for the send off for michael jackson. an online lottery to register to free tickets ends tonight. manuel reports from los angeles. >> fans of michael jackson are paying tribute to the pop icon this holiday weekend. >> mike is right there doing the moon walk. >> hundreds are sharing their condolences on a giant sign outside the staple center. >> blessing him and thanking him for everything. >> they traveled here from all over the world after hearing the stunning announcement of jackson's death. >> i came here because i was sad and i really wanted to be a part of this. >> jackson's fans registered online for a chance to attempt his memorial service on tuesday. the deadline to register is tonight. fans will learn if they are selected for the golden tickets tomorrow afternoon. >> we will get tickets. >> the odds are slim. as of yesterday, more than a half million people have registered online for the free tickets and they are only giving away 17,500. >> the city is already preparing for massive crowds, even though officials urged fans to stay away if they don't get a ticket. the service will be provided free of charge to television networks around the world. >> you might want to consider watching this from the comfort of your own home. some of jackson's fans have headed north to his ranch. neverland. a memorial to remember the singer is steadily growing outside the front gates. >> happiness, nothing negative. >> jackson held his final rehearsal on the staple stage, making it a fitting place for the world to say good-bye. manuel, 9news now and wusa9.com. >> coming up on 9news now. how is the president spending his fourth of july? and do we need to watch out for any showers this weekend? tony. >> we have rain in the forecast. we'll let you know when that's going to arrive in a few minutes. stay tuned, the seven-day nehacast co ungmip xt after this short break. follow your lead. they watch everything you do... ...and every move you make. this includes your choices about what you eat... ...and your choices about health and exercise. so take the lead. if you make healthy choices... ...your children will, too. it's up to all of us to lead our youth to a healthy future. for a parent and caregiver checklist for raising a healthy child, visit surgeongeneral.gov president obama is spending this independence day in the nation's capital. they are hosting a fourth of july cookout at the white house. earlier today, the first family returned from camp david where they hosted a sleepover for 20 girls to celebrate daughter, malia's birthday. the oldest daughter turns 11 today and what a nice day to have an outdoor birthday party for anything. >> this is typically, we are getting close to the hottest part of the year. fourth of july usually means 90- degree weather. not today, the humidity is comfortable. it's nice out there this evening. the clouds are thickening up and i have been getting phone calls. people are concerned that rain is moving in. i think it's going to be fine for the firework displays. let's start with the three-day trend. we have rain in the forecast. but not until late tonight and tomorrow. we should be fine this evening. tomorrow the temperatures are below normal with the clouds and showers around. specifically for tonight, around 10:00, i think the fireworks displays will be dry. it could be cloudy and a little breezy, but other than that, should be fine. chance for rain showers after midnight. low temperatures in the 60s. sunset is at 8:37. mostly cloudy, a chance for rain showers, especially in the southern suburbs. the high temperatures in the mid to upper 70s. 80s on average this time of year. right now, 82 degrees at national airport with a dew point of 58. not uncommon to have the dew points running up close to 70 d that's what creates the mugginess. dew points in the 50s this time of year, we'll take it. a little unusual. 82 degrees at culpeper. 77 in winchester. once again, everybody will settle back into the 60s tonight. satellite picking up cloud cover. these are high thin clouds right now. you'll see there's no precipitation under this cloud deck. at least not yet. that's why we are going to be okay this evening. the showers are coming close. they are moving into west virginia right now. there's a system coming out of the ohio valley that is producing the rain. you notice the projectly is to the southeast. we are going to get clipped by the northern fringe of the system. there's a better chance of rain in the southern suburbs. the system will pass through the southern part of virginia, fairly decent chance for rain, southern maryland, and northern neck of virginia. if you are watching us close to the pennsylvania line tomorrow, i think you guys have a chance to stay dry. the further north you go, the better chance you'll see dry weather. you will see some of that rain shower activity. either way, it will stay cool with temperatures in the 70s and might be rain left early monday morning. the temperatures stay nice, all the way through the middle of the week and for the first time in a long time, have a 90- degree number in our seven-day forecast. perhaps by friday next week, we'll get up close to 90. chance for rain for the beginning of the weekend. even though it doesn't look perfect, the fireworks display is going to be fine. >> hopefully the showers stay to the west until after midnight probably. >> it is really pleasant. >> it's gorgeous. a breeze, no humidity. >> thanks tony. it's an independence day traditional, the annual nathan's hot dog eating contest in coney island, new york. >> three, two, one. >> california joe claimed the title of top dog again, chomping down 68 dogs in just ten minutes. that set a new world record and gave the 25-year-old victory over six time winner of japan. it's chestnut's third time capturing the title. >> he came out wanting to win. he ate the most he ever has, and this is great. i'm so happy. >> looks like a food fight. >> no kidding. >> chestnut says he plans to celebrate his victory tonight with some lighter fare. he will be having a cob salad with ranch dressing for dinner. good change. >> low fat ranch dressing, right? >> exactly. we turn to sara walsh now at congressional country club with the very latest. >> we are going to have all your highlights from the golf course and continue to monitor just a stunning story out of nashville, quarterback, steve . nair killed at age 36 that's nex th b@ welcome back. a shocking story out of nashville. where tennessee titan and ravens quarterback, steve mcnair has been killed. the 36-year-old was found in a downtown residence fatally shot in the head, along with him, a woman also killed, mcnair played 13 seasons in the nfl, leading the titans to the super bowl in 1999. he played the last two of his career for baltimore before retiring in 2008. there are no suspects in custody, mcnair is survived by four sons. we will continue to monitor this story and pass the details along on our website, as they become available. so we move on to the events today here at congressional and all week long, tiger woods said he has no problem being the greetty host. anthony kim has no qualms about being selfish either. the defending champ wants a repeat and he may get one. third round of the at&t national at congressional here in bethesda. one shot behind tiger. on the sixth, drains the 40- foot birdie to move to 9 under and into a tie for a lead with tiger. tiger with the eagle attempt for the lead and he drains that. the first eagle of the week. tiger up three shots on the field. two holes later, tiger gives the lead back from one bunker into the next bunker. he would double bogie. on 16, eagle was the first and here is the second. chipping in from the french drains it. it wouldn't last, on 16, last year's winner, anthony kim, and tiger on 16, the put for eagle just off the green and just misses there, he would tap in for the bierty to tie kim. both are tied at 10 under. >> i played very well today. i actually scored not as well as i played. so i know there's a couple careless mistakes i made out there today and if i take care of those tomorrow, i should be in good shape. >> i live the dream every day. life is good and it is great to be playing good here. it makes all that much better. >> i have been playing real well all week and you know, hopefully i can carry it in tomorrow. >> here is a look at your leader board. kim and woods on top at 10 under. michael allen shot a 65. he is tied at 9 under with cameron beck man. jim tied for fifth. he was eight under today. u.s. open winner, lucas glover at 7 under. that leaves him in 7th. make sure you join us tonight at 11:35. britt haber wraps up a full day on the course, including future stories and brett's daily chat with tiger. that's tonight at 11:30. >> for most folks the fireworks won't go off until the sunsets unless you were at nationals park. adam dunn himself was putting on an explosive display. the nationals hosting the braves, 7th inning nats down. and this here is a solo shot, but it will go down as home run number 300 for adam dunn. the 29-year-old becomes the fifth fastest man to become that number. this is a single to center. nick johnson would score. it's all part of a four-run 8th inning. winning this one 5-3. >> i don't know how to explain it. hopefully it's not the last one i hit. kind of getting out of the way and set it for 350 now. >> tennis in the all williams wimbledon final. she made three of the four last slams. how is this for bragging rights?
