county will pay tribute to officer paul detomo, one of 14 law enforcement officers to die in the last year. a memorial and candlelight vigil will be held tonight in woodbridge. >> there will be a drum the salute battery will conduct firing drills between 7:00 and 8:00 this morning. the cannons can be heard in the district. >> floodwaters may start receding along the mississippi river near memphis. >> cresting is expected today at 48 feet. that's 14 feet above flood stage in the city. >> this is the highest the water levels have been there in over 70 years. there is some flooding in the low-lying areas but the levees designed to prevent the disaster actually worked. >> we think we have a pretty good handle on it. the levees are going to hold. we've evacuated around 400. there are another 1300 who are in the low-lying areas. >> president obama has already signed a disaster declaration in tennessee. now, all eyes shift to the south where the flooding is expected in louisiana by next week. >> closer to home, a 9-year-old child is dead, his mother in a hospital. they were hit by a car last night in ashburn, virginia. loudoun county sheriff's department says this happened around 9:15 last night along farmwell road at ashburn village boulevard. the two were hit while crossing the street. the driver is helping out with the investigation. alcohol and speed were not factors. we don't know yet if the two were in the crosswalk or not. >> redskins defenseman albert haynesworth is due before a judge in d.c. he's facing a charge of sexual abuse. a waitress at the w hotel says haynesworth groped her after she allowed him to put a credit card in her blouse. the football player was threatened by the waitress because he left a tip she said was too small. haynesworth called 911 saying the two had a verbal altercation. this morning, maryland students and fans are reacting to the terp's selection of a new head coach. kristin fisher is live in college park with more reaction from maryland's pick. good morning, kristin. >> reporter: good morning, surae. it is a new era in terps basketball. the mark turgeon era. he has been hired to replace the legendary gary williams who announced his retirement last week. let's talk about who exactly this new coach is. now, turgeon will be coming to college park from texas a&m where he's been the head coach for the past four years. he took the aggies to the ncaa tournament each season. prior to his stint at a&m, the kansas native was with the 76ers and at wichita state. while he was at wichita five years ago, he had what many consider to be his greatest coaching moment. ironically, it happened here in washington when he led the team to the sweet 16. at the verizon center. now, turgeon held a press conference last night after the big announcement. he was visibly worn out from what he called a very tough day. he went back and forth but in the end, it was too good of an offer to pass on. >> it is not fair to coaches and players and families. but they have to make a decision. i know enough about everything there. so, i told the players, it is the hardest decision i've ever had to make. >> so, why exactly times" reports music director john mitchell will lead his final concert on thursday. mitchell founded the dematha music program. he has won dozens of national awards for that program. >> this morning, we have a commuter alert. you may have to wait longer to ride metro's extension to tysons corner. team building the silver line says it needs to put a control room in falls church. the county is debating where it should go. one location would delay the opening of the silver line's first section by eight months. right now, it is scheduled to open in 2013. >> a heads up for everyone who heads out on the 14th street bridge. there is a concrete island. starting thursday, the island is going to shift to the right one lane. so, everyone going to exit the 14th street needs to stay in the left starting to find jobs. >> if you've been out of work for a long time, you know it can be frustrating to look for a job. it can be scary, depressing, especially when no one else is getting hired. there is good news for folks still looking for a job. three out of five workers laid off in the last year have secured new employment. our partners at career builder reports this is what it took. 60% had to look in a new field. this reflects the growing trend where workers are re-educating themselves. 1/3 of folks had to relocate. 90% found full time employment. >> speaking of the workplace, are you a road warrior? chances are you could be doing more travel for work this year. 61% of corporate travel managers are upping their travel budgets this year. business travel was one of the first of the recession. you could be paying more to see a show in the future. arts groups in washington are fighting a proposed 6% tax on tickets and mayor vincent gray's budget for 2012. groups ranging from arena stage and the helen hayes award to cultural tourism d.c. are e- mailing supporters and circulating online petitions and live performances and museums. federal institutions such as the kennedy center and the smithsonian institution theatres would be exempt. so, we'll have to watch this. obviously, the groups are also wrirped about a trickle down effect. you might not go to the restaurant before >> they're looking nice and smooth out there. halfway through the 6:00 hour, green light stays on. we want to give you a camera tour to look at the district roads. we zoom on in. show you the area out in the georgetown part of things. wisconsin avenue at q street will be our first shot for you. very nice and quiet out this way. in northwest d.c., we want to move it to 12th street and constitution. no significant delays just yet. and no problems to report on inbound new york avenue. just a little slow from the times building to bladensburg road and approaching 10th street. obviously sunshine is out. sun glare will be a factor. don't forget the shades. we want to look at the trains. happy to report that metro, vre, marc are all running on time. still ahead, a look at roadways across the region. now back to you. police in louden county are investigating a tragic situation this morning. 8-year-old boy struck and killed by a car. >> he was walking with his mother when it happened and she's now in the hospital. >> the two were hit last night around 9:15 along farmwell road at ashburn village boulevard. loudoun county sheriff's office tells us the intersection is not well lighted. the driver had a green light. the driver stayed on the scene, cooperated with police. investigators do not think speed or alcohol were factors. >> now to the district, investigators think someone set this ambulance on fire last night. the ambulance was parked along south capital street at forester street along with several other pieces of equipment. it was found burning behind harris elementary school. the ambulance is old and was not in active use. >> the budget ax is falling on more than 600 d.c. school teachers and staff. this morning's washington examiner reports the layoffs will take effect at the end of the school year. however, laid off employees could reapply for vacancies at other schools. two 13-year-old boys at cooper middle school in mclean, virginia, are charge with pot possession on campus. school officials have interviewed 25 other students. they say several are also in trouble for some parents, this is a wakeup call to talk to their kids about drugs and alcohol. >> i'm going to talk to him because he needs to know this is not older age group problem. this could happen at any age group. >> the drug charges will stay on the boy's record for five years. >> we're following a developing story out of memphis, tennessee. the mississippi river will be cresting there, 14 feet above flood stage. president obama has already signed a disaster declaration for tennessee making that region eligible for federal money to rebuild. hundreds of people have already been forced from their homes because of the water in louisiana, the army corps of engineers opened a spillway to protect new orleans from the rising waters. >> it is hard to preplace a campus legend. that's what mark turgeon will try to do. he's maryland's pick to become the new men's basketball head coach. >> kristin fisher is live in college park with that part of the story. good morning, kristin. >> reporter: terps fans are waking up to this news this morning, the news broke late last night. it is now splashed all over the student newspaper, the diamondback. just want to show you the front page right now really quick. here is the big headline this morning. tapping turgeon. tensions a a&m coach picked to lead the terps. now, turgeon is coming to college park from texas a&m where he's been the head coach for the past four years. he's led the aggies to four consecutive ncaa tournaments. in a press conference last night, turgeon said negotiations started yesterday. culminating with what he called the hardest decision he's ever had to make. he chose to leave texas for maryland. he said it boiled down to location. an area that's produced great players and great teams. >> i think it is a fantastic place, the area alone. they won a national division championship seven years ago. they've had first round draft picks. just a lot of tradition. >> turgeon will be making his first appearance here as the head coach. tomorrow, he'll be holding a press conference right here at noon tomorrow at the comcast center. surae?
