that yellow light on. we want to urge you to be careful out there early this morning. especially with dealing with those wet roads. we're tracking a couple of incidents beginning with a new accident on 95 headed northbound. want to let you know past 123, we have crash activity. you're looking at conditions past the prince william parkway. we're watching the delays build from this point up toward the aquacon. outer loop, more problems in virginia approaching braddock road. the crash activity takes away two left lanes. on the inner loop, we have volume building between braddock road up toward 66. no incidents along the way. we want to take live video and show you what's going on in chevy chase. man, not good here. we have a tree that's fall on to a car. they're trying to get the roadway cleared. this is jones mill road where it meets the east-west highway. road shut down. the good news is police on the scene diverting traffic on to twin fork. that's getting drivers back on to connecticut. moving over to our real time graphics again, we're going to show you our outer loop. we're tracking the time, 95 to 270 still moving at about 12 minutes. 95 and the bw parkway doing fine out of laurel. d.c. 295 drivers, nothing to worry about as you make your way from 295 down to route 50 or northbound approaching the 11th street bridge, you're also in the green. still ahead, we're going to have the latest on incidents to avoid. andrea and surae, that's at 6:12. >> let's get a check on the stories happening today. memorials will be held across west virginia. it was one year ago today, 29 men died at the upper big branch mine. labor secretary hilda solis will take part in a candlelight vigil today. >> kurt busch comes to virginia today. he will visit wounded warriors at the quantico marine base and will take a small taste of basic training. eric holder will open a conference on preventing youth violence. it begins this morning in northwest. the conference will take part at the same time in six cities across the country. also today, the faa will issue an inspection order for 80 jets. >> the order is for a model of boeing 737-300 such as the southwest jet which developed a gaping hole mid flight last week. >> lindsey mastis was live in the satellite center with more on what this directive means. >> good morning, andrea. >> southwest airlines has already inspected most their planes. they've cleared 64 of the 80 planes. they haven't wasted any time. those can take to the skies but they did find problems with three of their planes finding cracks that are similar to the ones that happened in arizona. now, the inspectors are having to use electromagnetic technology to detect metal fatigue and the faa wants those inspections -- inspectors of several theories of the boeing 737 aircraft that have logged more than 30,000 takeoffs and landings. that's when the planes are about halfway through their life-span. >> as long as the aircraft is being maintained properly, you can get the life-span up to 75 to 80,000 cycles. >> southwest had to cancel about 70 flights yesterday but they hope to have nearly all of their grounded flights back in the air tonight. reporting live in the satellite center, i'm lindsey mastis, andrea, back to you. thank you, lindsey. >> the safety inspection order covers about 80 of the 737 jets. there are 13 different models being flown. more than 6600 of these jets have been sold to airlines since 1968 and it is the best selling plane in history. just about every major american airline uses them and it is the only kind of plane used by southwest airlines. the plane has two engines on the wing and usually carries between 100 and 150 passengers. at 6:05, we're just three days away from a potential shutdown of the federal government. the president will meet with g.o.p. leaders today at the white house. >> house republicans have come up with a plan to fund uncle sam for one more week but it would cut spending by $12 billion, not making any cuts for the pentagon. >> republican leadership on the hill is telling party members to brace for a shutdown. even as both sides try to reach some kind of agreement. both sides want to make cuts but can't agree on how. >> in addition to many choices about what to slash and what to keep, republican leadership has another very big choice to make. it has to decide whether it will do what the tea party wants it to do or what the country needs it to do. >> liberal are clearly responsible for a possible government shutdown. the american people know spending is out of control with the record deficit in february of $223 billion. >> a shutdown would put hundreds of thousands of federal workers here out of a job. government contractors could also shut down. essential government functions would keep on going. >> former d.c. schools chancellor michelle rhee welcomes an investigation into erasures on standardized tests during her tenure. a week ago, our partners at "usa today" uncovered an incredibly high number of erasures that suggest the improved test scores by some students may not have been earned. following a radio interview monday, rhee said while she supports a probe by the inspector general, she's confident there was no widespread cheating. >> i think that it is not going to be a problem once the new investigation happens, what you want to do is make sure the cloud has lifted, that people are very clear and confident about what was achieved. >> rhee couldn't comment on our report that people had been removed from their positions in 2009. after high erasure rates were discovered in four classrooms. >> right now, a follow-up on a pair of stories we brought you yesterday morning. virginia state police are widening their search for witnesses to a deadly hit and run. a taxi struck and killed 23- year-old daniel park on interstate 66 early sunday. police are trying to find two passengers from that cab. the cab driver tells police he didn't know he had hit somebody. >> police say street racing is to blame for a deadly crash in the third street tunnel. 33-year-old jeffrey keith edwards of upper marlboro died early monday morning. police say he lost control of his car while changing lanes. edwards was not wearing a seat belt. time for your money report. >> jessica is here with a look at gadgets that can save your home delays. i'm going to be back with another recap of your top tie- ups of the morning at 6:19. back to you. this morning, antigovernment protest leaders in yemen are calling for international health. it wants an end to the violent crackdown there. >> it is one of the stories making news at 6:13. more than 120 people have been killed since protests began in february. protestors want yemen's president to step down. he's been in power for 32 years. he says yemen will descend into payoffs if he leaves office. the man who appears to be haiti's new president will meet with reporters today. musician michele sweet mickey martelli won 68% of the vote last month. preliminary results were just released last night. the obama administration is reversing course. five suspects in the 9-11 attack will be tried by military tribunals instead of criminal court. the white house had called for the alleged mastermind of the attack to be tried just blocks from ground zero. at 6:13, we have a health alert. the benefits of sports are well- known. especially for young people. but they're also at-risk. at particular concern, concussions. multiple untreated concussions can lead to hyperactivity, learning disabilities, depression and brain swelling. the primary message for young athletes is if you get a concussion, stay off the playing field or court. but this is easier said than done. it is hard for young people to accept but now the video game industry is driving the message home. this year's version of the madden video game will place new emphasis on concussions. any time a player suffers one, he will be sidelined for the rest of the video game and the game announcers will explain the seriousness of the head injuries. also, no helmet to helmet hits will be part of the madden 12 game. since you're up this earl early, you may be in for a long day at work. that could mean long hours at the doctor's office. anita brikman tells us about a new study showing the more you work, the higher your risk of heart disease. >> truck driver brian can't remember the last time he only worked an eight hour day. >> for us, it is closer to 14, 15 hours. >> in fact, all that time on the road may be driving him closer to heart disease. a new study published in the annals of internal medicine find people who routinely work 11 hours or more a day increase their chances of developing heart disease 67%. >> this may be the first time that we've taken this long working hours concept and actually quantified it and combined it with an existing risk score. >> this study followed more than 7,000 civil service workers for over a decade. adjusting for other risk factors including high blood pressure, high cholesterol and smoking habits. researchers didn't say why the longer hours seem to increase the risk of heart disease but cardiologists have their suspicions. >> when you're working longer hours, you're subjected to more stress. >> reporter: despite the findings, he says he has no plans of slowing down. >> it is hard not. you have to work as many hours as you can out here just to make a living. >> that was anita brikman reporting. according to the cdc, nearly half a million americans a year die from coroner artery disease. 785,000 have their first heart attack and typically, the biggest risk factors including being obese and physically inactive. having a family history of heart virginia. that's why still the threat of showers and storms through midday and then sunny, breezy and much colder this afternoon. low 50s by this afternoon. as the sun returns. 64 tomorrow. thursday toward 66. this is your live shot from chevy chase. there in the clearing stages ax real mess out here on jones mill road where it meets the east-west highway. had a situation where the tree fell on to a car and a vehicle. has had the road shut down all morning. as a result, the crews out here diverting traffic to twin forks over to connecticut and you can tell from our live picture here that it doesn't look like they're going to have any of this cleared before the morning rush is over. let's take a look over at your trains. i want to tell you about some minor delays on the vre. we're looking at the fredericksburg line, train number 300 and 302, both running behind. also, getting word that for metro riders at the foggy bottom station, the escalators are still out. more tie-ups to avoid. [ male announcer ] icy hot spray. relief that's icy to dull pain, hot to relax it away. and no mess. icy hot spray. don't mess around with pain. we're back at 6:30. this is always the place to get your weather first. here is a loo live look at the american legion bridge. rain is pretty much gone. we have 59 degrees here right now. >> howard bernstein is here on the weather terrace with our forecast. no umbrella, howard. >> i've got it with me, andrea but the rain jacket is inside. right now, anyway, it is not raining. still spotty showers possible between now and even midday but a better afternoon so keep the umbrellas handy and keep in mind it will be much, much cooler. we start with a look at live doppler 9000 hd which, a couple of hours ago, was lit up big time. now, we're seeing the stronger storms in delaware and parts of the eastern shore approaching salisbury. for us, spotty light showers at the moment. i do think we'll see a few more because as we look at a bigger picture, you'll see some of the showers across west virginia, so, a break for awhile. as the front comes through, that's when we've got a chance for a few more showers. severe weather threat is over. temperatures in delaware around 70. we're in the upper 50s here. 30s in the mountains. so, it will be a colder and breezy to windy afternoon. we're going home with sunshine. that's a good thing but those winds will be out of the northwest over 20 miles per hour, gusting over 30. very brisk afternoon after having a record tying 85 yesterday. we'll have your seven-day forecast next time i see you. angie goff is in with a look at timesaver traffic. >> the yellow light stays on. we're using caution this morning. let's take a look at some of our tie-ups we're trying to avoid. 95 heading northbound at 123. crash activity from stretching, taking drivers at least 40 minutes. as we move things over to chevy chase, we take a look at the live conditions out here. jones mill road where it meets the east-west highway. a tree fell on to a car. traffic meanwhile is being diverted on to twin forks. that's getting drivers around this and getting them back on to connecticut. going over to 270, no incidents or accidents along the way. a whole lot of volume as drivers make their way from father hurley down to montrose. we have a little bit of wind to contend with as well. you're slow from frederick down to 121. your travel times, 66 headed eastbound from the fairfax county parkway, taking six minutes longer than usual. the dulles tollway, still in the green to the beltway. inner loop not bad from the wilson bridge over to van dorn. we're going to have the latest on l'enfant station. vre riders are being impacted. we have a power outage to tell you about at 6:46. now over to andrea. >> at 6:32, we have a very special your money report. i'm in the web center with jessica doyle. we're learning more about that major e-mail breach affecting millions of us. >> taking a step back over the weekend, several large companies reached out to their customer base. they warn them that hackers had compromised their personal information. now, the magnitude of the security breach is believed to be huge and it exposes consumers to a new round of attacks. if you do business with jpmorgan chase, best buy, tivo, you may have been exposed. hackers woke into the records of epsilon. and the attack may have exposed customers of its now believed up to 50 companies. even though the breach is said to be limited to e-mail addresses and possibly customer names, a lot of damage could still be done with that information. >> when you have a list of e- mail addresses and you have a list of names, then you can send customized phishing e- mails saying oh, please, log in to update our bank account information and if it has your e-mail address and your name, you're inclined to trust it. >> you may be receiving phishing e-mails. they may try to coax you into clicking on viral attachments and harmful web links then the hacker can take full control of your computer. >> look for the red flags. verify your account. now, know this. legitimate businesses do not ask you to send passwords. user names, social security numbers or other personal information through e-mail. other tricks you'll want to look for phrases like you have won the lottery or if you don't respond within 48 hours your account will be closed. epsilon contains information on 250 million customers worldwide. we still don't know how many people this has affected. >> if i see that in the subject line, you may have won the lottery? i know not to open it -- >> lottery, you can guess that you probably haven't won the lottery. >> yes, really. verify the account. >> let's say capital one, for example, e-mails you and they ask for your account information. call up the company. get out your capital one card. call up the 1-800-number and check with a customer service representative if they actually need this information. do it in person. do not do it on your computer. >> all right. good advice, jess. >> thank you. >> surae? >> thank you. it is 6:34. prince william county high schoolteacher is on unpaid leave this morning. she's facing criminal charges of having sexual relations with a student. the teacher is 27-year-old tina amato, a third year english teacher at garfield high school. the alleged student involved is 16 years old. police were called in after the student's phone was confiscated by another teacher on friday. >> it was learned through text messages that the two had been having a relationship and the investigation revealed it had been about going on for about a year. >> students we spoke with called amato a nice teacher. they were surprised by her arrest. in a few hours, house republican leadership will head to the white house. the president will meet with speaker john boehner to discuss keeping the federal government open. a shutdown is looming. the money rust runs out on friday. some of in the g.o.p. are calling for a stop gap measure which cuts more than $10 billion. but it would only fund the government for another week. democrats call the plan harmful and gimmicky. >> today, the federal aviation administration will issue an order for emergency inspections. >> it will affect dozens of 737s such as the one involved in a mid air emergency last friday. >> lindsey mastis is live in our satellite center with more on this story. good morning, lindsey. >> good morning, andrea. >> the faa will issue that order today and require that inspectors use electromagnetic technology to detect metal fatigue. cracks can occur in the plane from the cycle of pressurizing and depressurizing the cabin. nearly all of the planes targeted by this emergency order are owned by southwest airlines and the airline said they were never told that this might be a problem with their 737. >> it is not believed that this was an area that could fail until we see it now. >> southwest has already inspected and cleared 64 of their planes. they have 80 of them. they did find cracks similar to the ones in arizona on three of their planes. reporting live in the satellite center, i'm lindsey mastis, back to you. >> thank you, lindsey. >> three people are hospitalized after a small plane crash on the eastern shore. the plane was going in for a landing when a strong gust of wind flipped it. this happened monday in ridgely. that's in caroline county. a passerby pulled one person from the wreckage. firefighters rescued the other two. we bring you the latest on the disaster in japan. water with high amounts of radiation is spilling into the pacific ocean. the owner at a fukushima plant says the radiation measures seven million times the legal limit. crews are pumping sea water on the nuclear reactors to keep them cool but that water is spilling back into the ocean. experts believe that radioactive material would dissipate into the ocean. the outpouring of international support following the triple disaster in japan hasn't been as strong as other crisis. so, groups around the world spent monday raising awareness and money including groups at george washington university. the japanese-american student alliance at gw held a fund- raiser for the japanese red cross. all of the money will go toward relief efforts. the rain should be gone by lunch time! up next, howard looks ahead to the rest of the week. >> here is a live look at northbound 95 another potomac mills. it might be a little bit of a crawl from there to the aqua con. angie's next timesaver traffic is just seven minutes away. >> here is a look at what you'll see tonight on channel 9. my "me time" is when i thought i parked on level 2. or maybe 8?
