and killed while off duty. now the search is on for the gunman. the shooting happened early this morning at the forest village park mall in maryland. sky 9 is over the scene. that's the applebees restaurant. kristin fisher is live with more on the story. >> reporter: such a sad story this morning. especially when you take in to account it seemed to have started over something as simple as a suspect or a patron of this applebees who refused to pay his bill. really a terrible story this morning. right now, a massive manhunt is underway in the parking lot of this applebees. take a look. you can see a bunch of maryland state troopers, prince georges county police officers, all preparing to be ready to go the minute we get word that a suspect has indeed been located. let's just backtrack a little bit. i will tell what happened. this started 12:40 when prince georges county officers responded to a call for an officer in trouble. what happened is inside the restaurant, there was a suspect was refusing to pay his bill. he was apparently being very rowdy and argumentative with the staff so they brought it to the attention of a trooper, and the trooper, who was there to provide security at the restaurant. and that trooper his name is trooper wesley brown. s he he escorted this rowdy suspect outside of the restaurant. that is where this altercation took place. the trooper was taken to prince georges county hospital where he was pronounced dead. very tragic story this morning. right now police are reviewing information from the scene specifically they are looking at videotapes. there were many patrons inside the building a this point in time. they are trying to get more information about the suspect but they say they are going to be relentless until they find the person who did this. take a listen to what the colonel with prince georges county police had to say about the search. >> we obviously are going to search this area until we are very comfortable that either this individual is located or that we are very confident that he is not in the area anymore because certainly our concern is to locate this individual as quickly as possible and apprehend him without any further injuries to any officers or our citizens. >> reporter: what this means is that this massive surgery that's underway is really going to affect your morning commute. right now there's a helicopter up in the air searching for the suspect in the sky. also they have got troopers and police officers on the ground who were searching the woods at one point in time. in terms of the morning commute, what it means is that pennsylvania avenue has been closed off between darnell drive and silver hill in forestville. the good news is that suit land parkway is back open. but again, parts of pennsylvania avenue are closed and again right where i am standing right now just outside of the applebees on darnell drive the road is closed, as well. as for the trooper, again, his name, trooper wesley brown. he had been with the force for 3 1/2 years. he was stationed with the forestville barracks and at the same he was off-duty providing security for the applebees restaurant. again there were many patrons inside the restaurant at the time the shooting took place. right now prince georges county police are urging anyone who may have information about the suspect to call the tip line. the number is 1--- 1-866-411- tips. again the number is 1-866-411- tips. and we have just getting word that pennsylvania avenue is back open. we don't know if all of pennsylvania is -- sorry, just got confirmation, pennsylvania avenue is indeed back open. suit land parkway is back open. so we are seeing conditions improve in terms of what this means for your morning commute. but again, this road road, right here, you can see the tape is blocking parts of darnell drive so there will be somewhat of an impact on the morning commute but for sad story this morning. trooper brown has died and the search continues for the suspect. back to you. >> all right, kristin, thank you. and trooper wesley brown's shooting is a year and a day since an officer was shot and killed inside the holocaust department for excessive force and what he says is a cover-up. it is a report you will only see on 9 news now. matthew crouch said he was beaten senseless two years ago after he confronted an off-duty police officer. he said he yelled a this officer after he cop ran through a stop sign in his pickup truck. he said that's when officer -- when the officer snapped. >> he immediately jumped off of my friend, hit me in the head one time. i dropped to my knees and he hits me another time and i'm on the ground facing, actually in the middle of the street right there like this. and then i start to >> reporter: andrea, right now we have maryland governor o'malley and the superintendent of maryland's state police sharon sheridan walking over as we speak here. we got a briefing from maryland state police and he is now walking over to us right now to give us an update. i will turn it over to him and see what governor o'malley has to say. governor, thanks for joining us. >> thank you all very much for being here. we have had a horrible tragedy in our state. trooper wesley brown, 24 years of age had been on the force since 2006, was shot and killed here last night. and we ask all citizens of our state to pray for trooper brown's family and with that i'd like to turn it over to our colonel, the superintendent of state police terry sheridan to update you on the investigation. >> well, as the governor pointed out, trooper brown had been on the job 3 1/2 years, 24 years of age, he lived here in prince georges county. he is the 42nd trooper to die in the line of duty. you get that call in the morning and you don't want to hear it be unfortunately we did receive it. we have good police officers working on the case. we have someone who maliciously killed someone with a handgun and we are working closely with prince georges county police, the fbi and now we the work at hand is to find this man and place him under arrest and get him to trial because what he has done is devastated the police family. he's devastated his personal family and all of those people he's protecting day in and out. these men and women put their lives on the line and when this happens -- it goes against our society. it goes against all that we stand for. and we have to do all that we can to arrest this person and bring justice and unfortunately we have lost a good young trooper, and a family have lost a son, a brother, and he's just recently engaged to be married and his fiance has lost a future husband. >> what's the status of the investigation? they have searched the law enforcement officers have searched the area. they have gone through wood areas and apartment buildings looking in cars and all over. they have not found the suspect. so we are making an assumption he's out of the area but we still looking for him here. a description is broadcast. all the law enforcement here in prince georges county, the state of maryland is getting the information and we will not stop until we find this man. >> reporter: can you tell us -- >> what can you tell us as far as how this happened? police are telling us this was over a dispute over something like paying a bill an a trooper is now dead. >> the investigation is very, very active right now. noose rows witnesses are being interviewed. the officer was working secondary employment which is not unusual and of course when it comes to a point where he has to draw his service weapon he puts himself in active duty. so, in to active duty. >> what does it say to you that someone would kill him over a bill basically. >> the motive, if there could ever be a motive for something as horrible as something like this is still something that is being investigated. officers put their lives on the line every day because they are a tiny kernel of a small number of brutal bold people that would take another's life without thinking about it. and that's what happened here and there's no way to make sense of a murder like this, 0 of a dedicated 24-year-old trooper who was doing his job and out there on the streets for us, and as colonel sheridan said, what we must do now is focus our energies on this investigation, on identifying this suspect and bringing this person to justice. >> give us a description if you have one. we can let everyone no know what to look for. >> african-american male, 5'6", 5'8", 135-pounds last seen wearing a light blue hugo boss jacket, short hair, dark complexion and a little bit of a beard. >> do we know for sure that the suspect knew that trooper brown was indeed a trooper or did he just think he was another gentleman inside the store? >> the prince georges county police officials have indicated to me he was wearing a jacket that is was clearly marked as a police officer on the back. >> and he was armed with a service gun. >> yes, he was and we have retrieved that weapon. we do have that. >> did he not have a chance to pull it out? >> i don't know what the answer is to that. the investigation will certainly tell us that but sounds as if he was talking on a telephone and was shot without any forewarning forewarning. >> do you know he was on the phone with? >> we haven't checked the phone records to see who he was talking to or calling. >> do you know what the time line was in terms of how much time passed? >> i haven't seen that yet. i don't have it. >> do we have anymore information in terms of how many shots were fired? >> we don't know but there were multiple casings found at the scene. >> do we have an idea where the suspect got the gun. did he have it on him in the restaurant or did he go somewhere and answer it. >> i can't answer that. i just don't know. the investigation will hopefully show that and give us an idea of who we are looking for. we will keep you corrupt dated as this unfolds an we are very focused, every ounce of energy we have is dedicated to this and we will keep you informed as this develops an we appreciate you coming out and informing the public. thanks a lot. >> thank you very much. >> there you have it. that was colonel sheridan with maryland state police and governor o'malley giving us the latest on this investigation as it continues. so we now know that police are indeed looking for an african- american suspect. again, if you are just joining us what happened around 12:40, a maryland state trooper, was off duty, was inside of this applebees right here on darnell drive in forestville, maryland. and apparently a suspect inside the restaurant decided that he didn't want to pay the bill and so that was brought to the attention of the trooper. the trooper escorted him outside and once they got outside the door of the applebees the suspect produced his weapon and fired several rounds striking the trooper and the trooper was taken to prince georges county hospital where he was pronounced dead. the one thing we just learned from this press conference was indeed that trooper brown was very young. he was only 24 years old. he had been on them force for 3 1/2 years an he was engaged to be married. so that just adds to the tragedy of the story unfolding this morning. again, there's a massive search underway right now as police try to identify and locate this suspect. they say they are not going to arrest until they do find him. again, they are looking for an african-american male last seen inside of this applebees last night. now, i chatted with a woman who was standing outside actually crying just right by where our live trucks are set up this morning and i asked what he was doing there and she was a close friend of trooper brown. she said she had known him for about 20 years. she said he has been an off- duty officer here for not too long. this is actually something of a new second job that he had picked up to earn a little more money. and she just said he was an absolutely wonderful opinion. she was devastated that she did not get to say good-bye to him one last time. she was driving through the darking lot last night a few hours before the shooting took place and she said inside the restaurant it was absolutely packed because, keep in mind it was game four of the nba finals last night. so it was very busy inside the restaurant and that's why police say there were many patrons inside when the shooting took place. if you were inside of know anything about the shooting, police are asking you to call this number. it is 1-866-411-tips. if you have any information about the suspect or his whereabouts. for now back to you. of course we will follow this story for you throughout the day and you can follow it as well at wusa9.com. we'll be right back. welcome back to 9 news now. it is 6:44. one day after his major league debut, strasburg read the top ten list on the late snow with david letterman. check it out. >> to celebrate my first big league win i bought a hot ton time machine. >> number six. >> i wasn't really good until i gotten bitten beta radioactive spider. >> number five. >> some guys think i directed e.t. >> i thought he directed e.t.
