stairwell. it was caught on tape. this beating happened at the aspen hill apartments on georgia avenue. a 30-year-old father is jumped bay group of men. it followed another beating at georgia and connecticut avenues. that victim escaped and three suspects were arrested. police don't think robbery was a motive in either attack. >> often times, nothing is taken. they are doing it for the sport of it. to see what they can do and get away with. >> reporter: investigators say the group begins its attack by asking victims for money or a cell phone. police say if that happens to you, keep walking until you are in a well-lit or crowded area. the department of education says virginia tech broke the law in its response to the 2007 campus shootings. 32 students and faculty died in that shooting. a report says the school violated a policy on timely warnings when there is a campus crime or threat. virginia tech says its actions on the morning of the shooting were within the guidelines it operated under at the time. >> we don't believe it is appropriate to hold us to a standard that was implemented 18 months after the actions by which we are being judged. >> reporter: tech has been criticized before for not alerting the campus sooner on the day of the shootings. it has taken steps to change its policies. political watchers are surveying the landscape this morning. several interesting results in a series of primaries on tuesday, including one in pennsylvania. kristin fisher is live from captiol hill where lauers -- lawmakers are making notice. good morning, kristin. >> reporter: good morning, andrea. it is not a good day to be an incumbent. what do you say? let's look at the winners and losers from yesterday's primary battles. and we want to start with pennsylvania. where voters fired long-time senator arlen specter after switching parties last year and instead chose joe sestak as the nominee for the senate in november. moving on to arkansas where long-time democratic senator blanche lincoln is in the fight of her political life. she is forced in to june 8th runoff with bill halter after failing to win 50% of the vote in the primary. and finally in kentucky, voters chose rand paul, the tea party candidate endorsed by sarah palin, as the state's republican candidate for senate. he beat out a more established opponent this kentucky politics, secretary of state trey gray son. put it all together and he says it is a sure sign that voters, anti-incumbent anti-washington sentiment will carry over until november. >> they are angry and uncertain. and i think most of that is leveled against incumbents. i don't think it's a question of being a republican or a democrat. it's a question of being in office or out of office. >> reporter: now, one other big race to talk about in pennsylvania was that special election to fill the house seat of democrat john murtha who died in february. that race was won by democrat mark crist and he defeated republican tim burns. so a democrat will indeed keep that seat but sounds like a tough year for politicians in general, but especially incumbents and any candidates with strong ties to washington. back to you. break out the black ties and look out for party crashers. the president and first lady are hosting the second state dinner at the white house tonight. the guest of honor, mexican president calderon. and his wife. they will be welcomed to the white house tonight. the dinner begins just after 7:00. we are learning more about an emergency landing at dull less airport this week. it wasn't the first problem with the united 757. the airline reports passengers on the same plane on sunday complained of the smell of smoke, but nothing was found. photos, taken on board the plane showed a fire in the cockpit. it got so hot the windshield glass cracked. the plane heading from new york to los angeles landed safely at dulles. time for a special "living $mart" report. than science about the cause of the growing food sensitivity. >> there is a chemical in there that we haven't identify that is triggering about about rent response in that individual. >> reporter: there are hundreds of on-line complaints and they believe increased imports from china are to blame. >> are they doing something different, one report said yes, they are. they are processing the pine nuts differently. >> reporter: the fda is investigating what is causing pine mouth after receiving 53 complaints in the last year and some of the food chains are acknowledging the problem. costco says it has been consulting with the government about complaints it received and is currently running tests of its own on pine nut samples. another surgery turned up an apology from trader joes saying it is aware the problem is happening more and more. whatever the reason, jessica simon is making a change. >> i can live without pest toe but maybe try another nut but i think i will stay away from pine nuts for a while. >> the food industry is waiting on the fda before making changes and i had this myself at easter. it is a miserable thing to have to go through. >> all right. you can live without bet we are making is on humanity and that enough people will come in that will give enough that the cafe can sustain. >> the prices are suggestions and when you pay the money doesn't go in 0 cash
